If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Although this adage was used for years, it was popularized in the 1970s. In context, the speaker referred to government trying to fix things that were not broken, while ignoring things that needed fixing.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

As Christians, we may wonder at this time of year, “If Christmas ain’t broke, then why does the world keep trying to fix it?”

The answer is that the world views Christmas very differently.

It sees Christmas as an occasion for lavish gift giving, disregarding God’s greatest gift— his Son, the world’s Savior. “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” (Luke 2:11).

The world sees Christmas as family time, losing sight of God’s promise, “So

in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith” (Galatians 3:26).

The world sees Christmas as a party time, ignoring the true reason for celebration,

“Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you” (Zechariah 9:9).

In short, the world has lost Christmas’ true meaning: the celebration of God becoming man to perfectly fulfill the law and pay for mankind’s sins.

From the Christian perspective, Christmas works just fine!

God bless your Christmas celebration.

5 questions GC faculty

“Five Questions with the Faculty” is a light-hearted look at the teaching staff at Lakeside Lutheran High School. This edition features Mr. Johnson, who began his ministry at LLHS in 1993, and currently teaches Science 9 and Human Anatomy & Physiology and coaches cross country and track & field. Other staff members share that if Lakeside offered a “dry wit” trophy, Mr. J would be on the podium every year. Here are some other things you might or might not know about Mr. Johnson:

After receiving a B.S. from the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1971, Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Naval Reserves on the USS ALAMO LSD33 through 1973. He married Karen in 1973 and they have 2 sons, Bryan, who lives with his family in California, and Scott with his in New Hampshire.

With a masters from George Williams College in Downers Grove, IL (1981) and synod certification from MLC (1997) along the way, he has also taught Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Technical Drafting, Keyboarding and Health at LLHS. He has been the chair of our Science department since 1996. Lance & Karen are members at the Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel in Madison.

student news E notes: Another month, another bunch of blessings from our Lord and Savior!

Our Boys’ Cross Country team earned a spot on the line at the State Meet, and with 8th place, its best finish at state since 2004. Warrior Volleyball achieved a berth at the WIAA State tournament, the first trip back since 2000. The fall sports awards night recognized not only these 2 sectional champion teams, but also 29 athletes from among our cross country, football, boys soccer & volleyball programs to achieve Allconference team honors, and two Capitol North Conference Athletes of the Year.

Dozens of Warriors joined in a Teens for Christ-sponsored “Operation Christmas Child.” Generous hearts filled 34 shoeboxes and also donated the shipping cost to “touch the lives of children and families around the world, bringing hope through the Good News of Jesus Christ in the form of a simple gift.” (samaritanspurse.org) Our Swing Choir—a 16-member choreography-focused sub-set of A Cappella choir— joined over 100 other singers and dancers at the Regional Choral Fest at Luther Prep, where 3 days of intensive effort and cooperation gave thrilled audiences both a Pops and a Sacred Concert in just one November weekend.

Even with the understandably strong student pull to attend the state VB match, your LLHS saw 34 Warriors head off to join 300+ other junior and seniors in New Ulm for the annual fall “Focus on Ministry” weekend at Martin Luther College. We join in MLC’s prayer that their visit “helped these Christian young adults to plan their future in ministry ­— wherever the Lord leads them!”

Our annual Veterans’ Day Observance, when we host a morning of breakfast and fellowship and a special chapel service, brought over 100 vets and spouses from all branches of service to campus Nov. 4. Thanks to God for all vets and for our freedoms!

I once asked students to raise their left hands. One student had the other hand up.

I asked why not the left. The answer? “I’m right-handed.”

What’s one of your most heartwarming moments of your time at LLHS? The response I get from the faculty every spring when I broadcast a “no homework for track athletes” reminder is always very heartwarming.
