Fed eration Connection Happy Reformation Day? The Lutheran Reformation is not highly regarded as it once was.
Years ago, large assembles attended special Reformation services. The listeners heard impassioned speakers exhort them to remain true to the Word of God. Luther and other reformers were lauded as God’s heralds who restored his Word to its rightful place. Each Reformation service closed with a rousing rendition of A Mighty Fortress. In 2016, this is not the case. Attendance at special Reformation services is obligatory to many. Although the message among us remains the same, some in the church who bear Luther’s name downplay the day.
The Reformation is an important festival! First, the Reformation shows our sinfulness. In misguided vanity, men placed their teachings on par with God’s Word. They denigrated Scripture’s holy qualities and sought God’s glory for themselves. Secondly, the Reformation highlights God’s love to sinners. Luther and the other reformers heeded God’s loving call for change. Luther led those men to study Scripture, find its truth, and teach it to the masses. They pointed out the wrongs of prevailing doctrine and preached the gospel. They also emphasized God’s great love through Christ in the forgiveness of sins. Finally, the Reformation points to heaven. It reminds us of times in which men willingly risked their lives for the truth. It reinforces that the reformers and devout believers of all times now fill heaven’s ranks. The correct understanding of sin and grace—as taught in the Reformation—reveals God’s gift of salvation intended for all. Sola fide (by faith alone), sola Scriptura (by Scripture alone), and sola gratia (by grace alone) are still the rallying cry 500 years later. Even though the world has downgraded the Reformation as just another day, may God give us the vision and passion to appreciate it and see His love to sinners in it.
