Fed eration Connection

You literally would have to be living under a rock to be unaware that this is an election year. According to some, the upcoming election is pivotal in our nation’s history and existence.

Regardless of whether you have followed the primary season’s developments, an incredible opportunity is yours if you are a registered voter. In about two months, you have the privilege to select leaders on various levels. This process is unique. One international agency estimates that less than 9% of the world’s population enjoys anything similar to the United States’ electoral process.

The people that we elect will impact our lives. Their decisions will determine our course as a nation and our existence as individuals. Ideally, our leaders’ lives should exhibit their faith in the one, true God. After all, their beliefs influence their decisionmaking as much as it does ours. That being said, no one - including politicians - is perfect. All are flawed by sin. Sin affects everyone’s actions and decisions.

Still, the privilege to elect leaders is God’s great blessing to us. He uses our current process to guide our country in ways that he determines are best. Furthermore, he uses elected individuals to carry out his will. God will even use the seemingly “bad” elected officials and their flawed decisions to carry out his plans.

What great comfort it is to know that God is in control. Through his psalmist, he declares, “The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at [the rulers]. He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath” (Ps. 2:4-5). God’s plans ultimately prevail in spite of sinful humans. He continually directs the world’s events to his glory.

There is always danger in publicly advocating particular candidates or certain parties because these people and their organizations change over time.

God’s plan for us as believers is to choose those who would serve us and lead our country in the best way. He will use them to accomplish his will.

As you formulate your voting choices, give thanks to God for this process. Through it, he guides and governs our nation. At the same time, pray for God’s guidance to our leaders.

faculty news and notes Help us welcome new faculty faces to your Lakeside!

The quickly approaching 2016–17 school year brings two new faces to our classrooms, even as both faces already have some level of familiarity with our Lakeside family. Please say hello and welcome when you see them at school, at events or around the federation!

Mr. Andrew Willems LLHS Technology Director

Mrs. Jennifer Krauklis Math and Science Adjunct

A 1985 Minnesota Valley Lutheran alum, Andrew Willems is a 1989 graduate of (D) MLC. He was assigned to Trinity-St. Luke’s in Watertown and taught there for 23 years.

In 2006 he earned an M.S. in Education with an emphasis in Integrating Technology in the Curriculum from Walden University. In 2013 he accepted a call to Shoreland Lutheran to direct technology efforts and teach math and computer science. He started the SLHS STEM Academy and taught the Intro to Engineering Design class, coached Freshman Boys Basketball and JV Boys Soccer. Mr. Willems is looking forward to his first year at LLHS for more than the usual reasons: “I had suffered with a heart ailment for 10 years,” he shares.

“Last December I had a 4 1/2 hr surgery to correct a cardiac electrical issue and, God willing, am looking to teach an entire school year without being in the hospital!”

Growing up in Elkhorn, Jenny (Nommensen) Krauklis is a 1998 LLHS grad. She attended MLC and graduated with an Education degree from Wisconsin Lutheran College, where she is also currently pursuing a graduate degree in Educational Leadership.

Married for 15 years to Brandon, (who works at Central Ceiling Systems in Deerfield), they have 4 children here on earth —Abel, a LLHS freshman, Luke (5th) Benjamin (4th) and Selah (4K)—and Jonah, in heaven.

Married to Heidi (nee Shuster) for 27 years, they have 5 children ranging from age 16-23.

Heidi is an optician for Dr. Foley in Lake Mills and Fort. In spare time, Andrew loves to read educational & leadership books, travel, golf and landscape. Due to the busy years since they were part of the LL federation, he feels he may need reminders for names. He writes, “Please introduce yourself (again?) to my family and me. We’d like to re-connect and make new friends!”

While her family, homemaking and their church home at St. Paul in Lake Mills have been her primary focus for years, Jenny also owns a health and wellness business, was Childcare Director at St. Paul 2010–12, substitute taught at area LESs, and has served as LLHS Varsity Volleyball Coach for several years. “I also enjoy watching my kids at all of their activities, spending time outdoors, eating Skittles and recreating American Ninja Warrior in our backyard,” she shares with a smile, and continues: “I have always been grateful for the education and training Lakeside gave me when I was in high school. In fact, Mr. Paul Bauer is the one who inspired me to be a teacher and coach.

When I first came back to the Lakeside family as a volleyball coach, it was a blessing to see my athletes grow in Christ, as well as in their athletic abilities. I am thankful and excited to be able to get to know more of the student body and faculty as a teacher now, as well.”

Summer events are just another piece of an organization that truly involves students the whole year through.

In 2015–16, Lakeside FFA grew its 20 charter members to 37, with a majority being freshmen. As a complement to the new Agriculture Survey course at Lakeside, FFA members competed this past year in soils and land management judging contests at UW-Platteville, at Farm Tech Days and also judged in the Forage Cup and other dairy career development events at the World Dairy Expo, among many other FFA activities. As the face of agriculture continues to be diverse, students gain valuable skills as they look to over 235 unique jobs getting food, fiber and fuels to the consumer from Wisconsin’s $88 billion ag industry (stats from Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation). Lakeside Lutheran FFA thanks its federation churches, school staff and area communities for their support of Christian and career education as our chapter aims to continue developing future community and church servant-leaders who will feed the planet and stay connected to agriculture.
