Fed eration Connection

Why the 4th? Each year, we celebrate America’s independence on July 4. But why July 4? The American Revolution began in April 1775. The first draft of the Declaration of Independence was written in June 1776. July 2 was the date that the Continental Congress declared independence from England. The Declaration was signed on August 2. Finally, Great Britain formally received the Declaration in November 1776. So, why is July 4 significant? On July 4, the Continental Congress approved a much edited form of the Declaration of Independence. July 4 was also the date the Declaration was first printed for a broader audience—for the colonies and the world. This message is more than a lesson of historical facts. It should remind all Christians that God instituted government to preserve societal order and promote the family. Because of sin, humans do not always act in ways that benefit others. God uses government — with its threat of punishment for lawbreakers — to protect peaceable, law-abiding citizens. Paul explains to the Romans, “For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong…. If you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer” [Romans 13:3-4]. We may not appreciate our government’s decisions when they run counter to the principles of God’s Word or when they negatively affect us. We have rights as citizens to speak against such decisions, work to change them and to elect new leaders. Yet, government typically blesses us with peace and safety, and allows us as citizens of this world (for now) to enjoy life and pursue our God-given course of service to Him & others. On July 4, celebrate God’s blessings of freedom and peace in your life through government. At the same time, reflect on your greatest blessing: your heavenly citizenship through faith in Jesus. Have a happy 4th of July! Mr. Jim Grasby is principal of Lakeside Lutheran. Reach him at 920.648.2321 x2204 or jgrasby@llhs.org
