Fed eration Connection Albert Einstein is credited with saying, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” From the world’s perspective, this is usually true. However, spiritually speaking, doing things repeatedly may well produce different results.

Christians have become worldly when thinking about the power of God’s Word. Especially in America where quick solutions are expected, some wonder why the Church does not grow more quickly—if even at all. They reason that if the Word is powerful, one hearing is enough to change sinful hearts into hearts that love and live for God. God tells us, “[My Word] will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11). He assures us that his Word works. It makes hearts deadened by sin into to living, forgiven hearts that serve him. However, God’s time frame is not always ours. About 75 years ago, the British government initiated the “Keep Calm” slogan to raise morale in the face of World War II massive air attacks. Recently, this slogan was rediscovered and applied to many different situations. Christians, “Keep Calm!” Our God says, “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). In every situation, God urges patience. This includes waiting for his Word to work. He assures us that his Word is effective in the way and at the time he chooses. For us, the application is to personally use God’s Word every day. Daily reading the Word and meditating on it is a great start. Using law and gospel with those we love is a must. Sharing it over and over with those who do not know Jesus is a necessity for their eternal good. God assures us that his Word is powerful and effective. It “will accomplish what [he] desire[s] and achieve the purpose for which [he] sent it”. Mr. Jim Grasby is principal of Lakeside Lutheran; his column is featured each issue.
