Our garden theme for Lakeside’s 5th annual social fundraiser auction and dinner is based on Paul’s reminder in 2 Corinthians, “for we walk by faith, not by sight.” And what a lovely walk it can be when we trust that the LORD has our children under his wing. We are grateful for your prayers and efforts for Lakeside, a ministry with its mission to assist parents in educating, encouraging and equipping teens for life — not just for their earthly lives, but life eternal, when all believers will walk together in glorious heavenly gardens. It’s your night to be a gardener for Christian education. Your event ticket alone helps water the seeds of the Lakeside teen ministry while you enjoy a lovely evening with friends, a delicious meal and entertainment. Add to the night the auctions, the raffles, the games, and it’s a win-win as your socializing and support make our garden bloom ever bigger and brighter. Please consider a walk with us in the garden on Saturday, February 13. This year’s dinner and auctions will be held at Windwood of Watertown, with wonderful features such as Ebert’s Gift Card Garden, a “Buy Me Now” table, Beef Wellington and Chicken Cordon Bleu for dinner, and much more! Fed eration Connection

Do we really need a Savior? Our self-help world leads many to believe that a Savior is unnecessary. We often feel that we can work out our own problems for a better here-and-now. Recently, a well-known evangelist wrote, “You were not created to be unhappy in order to keep everyone else happy. You’ve got to run your own race.” Humanly, this makes sense. Some spend their lives constantly trying to please others. In the end, they lose their identity and purpose. However, the theology behind it is faulty. It presupposes that since God loves believers, he wants them always to be well and happy. Therefore, if Christians do not succeed and are not continually happy, they conclude that they did something wrong. This thinking ignores the gospel because it looks to man for the power to change. Christ died for sinners. There will never be perfect justice, equality, and opportunity on earth—regardless how hard humans strive. Christians who accept self-help theology will incorrectly conclude that their relationship with God is flawed if their lives are not always good. We need a Savior. Christ calls us to follow him. However, his call extends beyond this life to the one to come. Jesus tells us that we will daily experience sin’s effects: false Christs, wars (and rumors of them), famines, betrayals, wickedness, and love grown cold. He does not promise us an ideal earthly existence nor will it improve with mere human effort. In fact, our Savior promises the opposite. “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” [Matthew 16:24]. Such knowledge leads us to look beyond our earthly lives to the glories of heaven. Do we really need a Savior? Absolutely! Our Savior took on human flesh, lived a holy life, paid sin’s price, and rose victoriously showing that his heavenly Father fully accepted his Son’s payment for our sins. Jesus alone supplies our needs and gives us the sure hope of heaven. Mr. Jim Grasby is principal of Lakeside Lutheran; his column is featured each issue.
