Principal’s Pen, from front page so far has he removed our transgressions from us” [Psalm 103:10-12]. No one can deny Scripture’s truth that “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” [1 Timothy 6:10]. Even so, we must admit that love for anything but God is rooted in the love of self. Who’s at the top of your love list?

Scripture warns Christians about loving anything more than God. Paul and the writer to the Hebrews both warn that loving money is very dangerous. While this is true, there is a deeper problem.

In the first sin, Satan did not offer Adam and Eve money. Rather, he promised, “You will be like God” [Genesis 3:5]. Humans being like God? This is appealing! Sin is not necessarily rooted in loving tangible objects. Rather, it is rooted in narcissism - loving one’s self more than God. So, if the root of all evil is love for self, what is the antithesis? It is, “The love of God is the root of all good.” What is love of God? Our Savior provides the answer. Once, an expert in the law asked, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment?” [Matthew 22:36]. Jesus responded, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.” [Matthew 22:37-38]. Jesus’ words provide a perspective for sinners who are continuously tempted to love other things before him. He tells us to love God with our whole being. This means devoting ourselves and all we have to him. But, we sinners must admit that God is not always our first love. Love of possessions and other people get in the way. We do this because it is good for us. The result is that we fail to love God and our neighbor because we are too busy loving ourselves. For these sins, we must humbly seek God’s forgiveness. As unfathomable as our sins are, God’s grace and mercy are more profound. Perhaps David best expresses when he writes, “[God] does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, See Principal’s Pen, last page
