Fed eration Connection What truly is Christmas?

As Christmas nears, have you noticed how its meaning has been all but lost? Today’s secular Christmas themes include happinessjoy, past-present-future, family-values-traditions, and, of course, Santa. It’s too bad that the world celebrates everything at Christmas—but Christ’s birth.

By the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, Solomon wrote, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9). What the world does to Christmas today, it has repeatedly done to Christianity throughout the ages. It is nothing new. In short, as long as there is truth, Satan devises schemes to oppose it.

Case in point: Creation. The Lord created humankind in true holiness to love and serve him. “The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it” [Genesis 2:15]. He gave humans supremacy over animals (1:28), dominion of the earth (1:29), and the right to name animals (2:19-20). It was a “sweet deal.” But, it also provided Satan an opportunity to redirect man’s focus.

Satan approached Eve with an unbelievable offer: you can be God! He said, “For God knows that when you eat of [the tree of the knowledge of good and evil], your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” [Genesis 3:5].

Being the master of lies, Satan sandwiches deception into truth. Adam and Eve would “be like God, knowing good and evil.” What Satan failed to disclose is that they would know good as a fading memory clouded by sin. Evil—which was then only a theory to them—would be their constant companion.

Today, Satan continues to spread his lies about Christmas in order to divert the world from its true meaning.

So, what truly is Christmas? By faith, it is: happiness-joy from “redemption through [Jesus’] blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace” (Ephesians 1:7); a past-present-future reminding us that even when we “were dead in [our] transgressions and sins, [God] made us alive with Christ” (Ephesians 2:1,4); and See Principal’s Pen, last page

faculty news and notes: ”From the fall of 1967, this place has been my life” This article continues the series of faculty and staff responses to why they’re thankful to serve at your Lakeside, along with recollections of moments that demonstrate the value of the investment of time and resources for the families who choose LLHS for their children.

Mr. Gerry Walta has been teaching for 37 years at Lakeside Lutheran, always as the German instructor, and currently also teaching U.S. History. What keeps him motivated? “I’ve always held special Romans 1:16, my confirmation passage: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes. Teaching and coaching is a ministry; both offer the opportunity to share God’s Word not only with words but with actions.”

Gerry Walta has been witness to almost 50 years of Lakeside history. “I have, over the years, developed a real sense of loyalty to the people of this federation,” says Walta. “The Holy Spirit led them to call me many years ago and I owe it to them to give my best. The students that sit in our classrooms are a gift from God, each and every one of them.”

Herr “Valta”, as his German students would pronounce, has memories of serving and being served by the ministry of LLHS that reach even further back than his late ‘70s teaching call: “Lakeside has “always” been a part of my

life. From the fall of ’67 when I entered these doors for the first time as a student, this place has been my life,” he says.

“Though I had only graduated from LLHS in spring ‘71, already the fall of 1973 marks the beginning of my “professional” life at LLHS. I was a sophomore at UW-Whitewater, seriously considering running cross country that fall. I also knew at the time LLHS was in need of coaches.

“So I spoke to at that time A.D. Ron Stelter, and asked if I could volunteer my services. Lakeside was in transition, having just called a new coach, PhyEd teacher and A.D., named Dale Walz. Mr. Walz and Principal Phil Strohm agreed that I would be the new Warrior Cross Country coach.

“So, the weekend before cross country started in ‘73, I distinctly remember taking a trip to the Northwoods with my future wife, Victoria, and her family. This time marked great events in my life: I fell in love with the Northwoods, I fell in love with the woman who would become my wife and I knew that if ever given the opportunity, I wanted to teach at LLHS!” In 1978, he would do just that when he accepted the call to teach German and History. For many years he also coached basketball and served as Admissions Director. “I take nothing for granted,” he says. “It’s been a real joy to have the opportunity to teach the children of former students, even travel to Germany with them. Lakeside students are special.”

Fall Athletes receive recognition from Capitol Conference Congrats to all of our fall athletes for another blessed year. A total of 12 Lakeside Lutheran athletes received first team Capitol North All-Conference team spots, 13 achieved second team, and eight earned honorable mention. In addition, two Warriors received Capitol North Athlete of the Year honors.

Junior cross country runner Mitchell Georgi won Conference Runner of the Year and represented Lakeside at the state meet. Georgi, senior Elijah Tesch and freshman Jennica Jensen made 1st team conference, while teammates Lydia Ulrich, Rachel Manteufel, Ben Tweit, Charlie Pingel and Kira Tweit were awarded spots on second team.

The boys soccer team took the conference and regional championships, and senior forward Joe Graumann was awarded Capitol Conference North Player of the Year. Nine other players

were honored by the conference, including Jon Kroeger, Nate Lemke and Stephen Phelps on first team, Robbie Jarnigo and Zech Schleef on second, and Tim Hodel, Eli Gartner, Josh Higgins and Griffin Torgerson received honorable mention.

Volleyball also took the conference championship, with five players earning conference recognition: Kendal Denson and Amber Rowoldt on first team and Patience Letko, Kaitlyn Gehler and Ellie Westrate on second team.

In football, Austin DeNoyer (RB), Blake Thiele (dBack and WR) and Conrad Schaalma (o-line) earned first team spots; Austin DeNoyer (dBack), Reynaldo LeonPeralta (middle LB) and Jacob Constien (dEnd) earned second team; and Jared Traver (dEnd), Nick Chesterman (QB), Mason DeNoyer (WR) and Jaden Schmidt (middle LB) received honorable mention from the conference.
