Fed eration Connection
Upside down Upside down. During the previous decade’s economic downturn, upside down described situations in which people owed more on their mortgages than what their homes were actually worth.
Upside down. This term also describes our relationship with God. God makes it clear in his Word that we were upside down in our relationship with him. More than that he says, “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). There was no value in us. There was no hope. We were dead with no hope of revival or life. Yet, in his love, God intervened and “made us alive with Christ even when we were dead” (Ephesians 2:5). The sad truth is that many Americans lost their homes in the early 2000s after being upside down in their mortgages. They could not pay their mortgages. They had no place to live. Before God intervened, we faced a similar fate for eternity. But God did more than make us alive. He also promised us an eternity with him by “[raising] us up with Christ and [seating] us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:6). In eternity, we no longer fear sin and its effects because our future in heaven is made sure through Christ’s merits. God’s gift of grace in our lives is unfathomable. It is pure love—and nothing less than that! Through God, we are no longer upside down, and his Word assures us of that. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith— and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast (Ephesians 2:8-9) Mr. Jim Grasby is principal of Lakeside Lutheran; his column is featured each issue.
