Fed eration Connection By the time that you read this column, a new school year will be upon us. With each new school year comes uncertainty.

New students may wonder if they will succeed.

Returning students may wonder how their new teachers will treat them. Parents may wonder if their children are really prepared for the next level of school. Teachers may wonder if they have the stamina to keep up with their students—some of whom are a quarter of their age. Administrators may wonder whether the incoming class will eventually measure up to the standards of the recently graduated one.

A new school year brings uncertainty.

It is comforting to us that in a Christian school—like Lakeside Lutheran—that there is an absolute stability. It cannot be seen. Yet, it exists in the curriculum and filters through to the school’s culture and climate. It hangs in the halls and even permeates the school’s co-curricular activities. This stability has quietly worked for centuries in all aspects of life—ever since God created the world’s foundations by his almighty Word.

That unseen force is the Word of God. It quietly works to change rebellious hearts that are as hard as stone due to sin into living, beating hearts that reflect Christ’s love. The power of the Word—just like its Lord—“is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). It calms the troubled conscience and gives rest to the weary soul. The unchanging Word gives spiritual confidence to the believer, allowing him to stand firm in the knowledge that “the Lord knows those who are his” (2 Timothy 2:19).

In a changing and uncertain world, the certainty of God and his Word are the solid foundation of all who believe.

A new school year brings uncertainty.

Thanks to our God for the certainty of his Word that allows us to live each day in confidence.

faculty news and notes: God entrusts us humans with such a responsibility...

This month continues the series of faculty responses to why they’re thankful to serve at your Lakeside, along with recollections of moments that demonstrate the value of investing time and resources for families who choose LLHS for their children.

Glen Pufahl begins his 4th year of serving your LLHS as Director of Bands and teacher of Language Arts for sophomores.

“One of my most memorable moments as faculty was a week long,” he says. “when it was my turn to lead chapel. It is such an awesome experience to stand in front of 400 people, centered around the Word of God, and then afterward, to have teenagers come up to me and thank me for the message I shared.

It is humbling to think how God entrusts us humans with such a responsibility of handling this amazing gift—His Word.”

As the band director, Mr. Pufahl works with a wide cross-section of the student body. They aren’t all “music majors,” he says. Some of them are the starting players for various sports teams, or computer specialists, or teens who love to be out in the farm fields. “Even so,” says Pufahl, “it’s a wonderful thing to see them all come together around music and put everything they have into using their God-given talents.”

The Warrior Marching Band recently finished its third tour under Mr. Pufahl, a 4-day trip to the National Cherry

Festival in Traverse City, MI. Past trips were to St. Louis in 2013 and a two-week tour of the East Coast last summer that included marching in the Washington D.C. Independence Day parade.

During the school year, over 20% of LLHS students take Band as a class.

Fall semester brings marching season with the Jefferson Gemütlichkeit and Homecoming parades, half-time field show, and the November Fall Concert that features elementary school instrumentalists we call “cadets.” The semester also includes a Christmas concert and ensembles such as Pep Band for home sports. Spring semester brings Pops, Easter and Commencement concerts, District and State solo/ensemble competitions and more ensemble performances such as Jazz Fest at WLC and Percussion Concert at KML. Pufahl moves straight into summer marching season early in May and wraps in July.

It’s certainly a good thing Pufahl enjoys the students. “It’s really a blessing to see these young people let their lights shine wherever they go, and what makes it so enjoyable. It’s honestly a blast to do this.”

Warrior Band will be back in the Saddle (Dome) again Participation in the Lakeside summer marching band program has been steadily climbing over the past three years. This summer’s seven local parades and a “short trip” to Michigan included 85 instrumentalists, color and honor guard members, plus directors and chaperones. Mr. Pufahl hopes to take 100 or more students to the Calgary Stampede in Alberta, Canada in summer 2016. warrior band: a traveling witness to the llhs difference It didn’t seem to matter where our teens were or what they were doing. Whether it was from other Cherry Fest tourists, amusement park operators, parade watchers or restaurant owners—chaperones brought back stories of overheard comments or direct compliments about the Lakeside Band. “The Pirates Cove manager asked me how soon they could have us back,” says Pufahl. “More than one said our group was the most respectful and well-behaved group they could remember. That’s putting a witness to the banner we march behind. Sections get together pre-parade and pray. It’s not a showy thing. It’s just part of what makes us shine for our Savior.”

Next summer will be the seventh trip to the Calgary Stampede since 1994 for the Warrior Band. “They will never experience something like this anywhere else,” says Pufahl. “I went as a junior in 1998, and I can still get chills thinking about those crowds. It’s sheer adrenaline to hear 400,000 people cheering you on during that 2.5-mile route. When you’re done playing, you can’t hear yourself over the crowd appreciation.” The 2016 trip is planned for July 2–16, and includes several other performances, including three parades on the 4th of July in the area around Mt. Rushmore. June will be spent performing in local Wisconsin parades as usual.

Pufahl shares another aspect of summer band that he says makes it a treasure. “Every year it seems I have kids who weren’t sure about committing at the start of the season,” he says. “Yet by the end it seems it’s those who say ‘It’s over already?’ and talk about all the new friends and memories they’ve made. My prayer is that we continue to grow as a group, both musically and as a great big group of friends, because there’s no doubt that cohesiveness is reflected in the sounds we make. God has been blessing this Warrior Band since well before my time, and I’m confident He will continue to do so!”
