Celebrate your true freedom “Let freedom ring.”

Throughout the summer months, America becomes more consciously patriotic.

Beginning with Memorial Day, then progressing to Flag Day, the 4th of July, and closing with Labor Day, feelings of national pride abound. Whether patriotism is displayed through apparel, celebrations, or food, Americans seem to forget their differences and pull together as a nation for a time.

As Christians, there is nothing wrong with celebrating the freedom our government provides. After all, “the authorities that exist have been established by God” (Romans 13:1). God establishes government for our benefit and for the well-being of society.

But Christians know that nothing in life lasts forever. Regardless of how durable institutions and ideologies appear, they will eventually end. God causes all things— including government—to function as he wills for the glory of his holy name.

Summer’s celebrations are good times for us to reflect on the true freedom that God gives us through our Savior. Born as slaves and captives of sin, Christ became our liberator. Through his perfect life, his innocent sufferings and death, and his glorious resurrection, God’s Son gives us a true and eternal freedom.

Enjoy the parades, the fireworks, and proudly display the red, white and blue.

But allow these trappings to be simple reminders of the true freedom from sin, death, and Satan that Christ gives to all who trust in him. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” (Gal. 5:1).

faculty news and notes: “I consider these all blessings from the Holy Spirit” This month continues with another installment in a series of faculty responses to why they’re thankful to serve at your Lakeside, along with recollections of moments that demonstrate the value of investing time and resources for families who choose LLHS for their children.

Mr. Jeff Meske just finished his second year of serving your LLHS in the Career & Technical Education department, where he teaches what many think of as “industrial arts” classes. He also helped charter and now advises the first parochial high school FFA chapter in the state. He also coaches wrestling.

“The story leading me to Lakeside is atypical in many ways. I grew up in public education, graduated from UW Platteville and taught at a public high school for 15+ years,” he says.“I consider it a blessing it that my daughters are able to start their careers at LLHS. It has been refreshing to see Christ at the center of our lives at school as we try to positively affect our teens on their road to heaven.”

Your Lakeside Lutheran just completed its first year as its own FFA chapter— #307 in Wisconsin and the first private school charter in the state—after a 12year cooperation with Lake Mills High School FFA. Jeff Meske, Lakeside Tech Ed teacher and FFA advisor, has watched the program more than double in membership and activity since he began his call here in fall 2013 (see related story).

While starting an historical FFA chapter may have received most of the press this year, Meske has been spending even more time preparing Warriors for possible futures in technical careers such as those that require skills in woodworking, welding, machining and maintenance. In addition, this fall your LLHS is offering an Agricultural Survey class through Meske, where students at all levels will be hands-on learners about horticulture, food production, animal agriculture and possible careers in these fields. More than 15 students have already registered for this inaugural course, a strong indicator of its value among LLHS families.

Mr. Meske is also anticipating the potential that comes with the recent granting of a wish list item by Twice is Nice Resale Store, i.e., a CNC router table. “This equipment gives our students another tool to apply their creative sides in manufacturing a variety of products.

We plan to use this on materials like wood, aluminum, acrylics and plastics,” he says. “Learning these skills has great potential—for future personal use as these tools become affordable home workshop tools, as well as being viable career skills as the baby boomers begin to leave the workforce.”

student news and notes: Lakeside FFA chapter enjoys a busy charter year

Perhaps it’s the leadership, perhaps it’s the dozen years spent with another chapter—most certainly it’s God’s blessing— that the first year of your Lakeside Lutheran FFA Chapter #307 has been a whirlwind of activity. We look forward to more great news from them!

FFA on the go: truly a year-round organization To be honest, our LLHS FFA Chapter wasn’t even officially chartered until the State FFA Convention just this past month! Yet after hearing it was a done deal last fall, the 20 member Warriors, with their eight elected officers, raced into activities last year that embody the FFA motto “Learning To Do, Doing To Learn, Earning To Live, Living To Serve,” including:

»» 22 students attended six different Leadership Conferences, including three who attended the World Dairy Expo and eight to National FFA Convention in Louisville »» Met with DPI agriculture consultant, State FFA officer, Lakeside Administration »» Assist with parking duties at Watertown Agri-business Dairy Breakfast at the Hasel Farm outside Lake Mills »» Designed and built a Homecoming float »» Invited by Lake Mills FFA to compete in donkey basketball fundraiser »» Helped run “Trunk or Treat” petting zoo with St. Paul, Lake Mills »» Built and delivered park benches to 8 Jefferson Co. grade schools with Thrivent grant »» Ran a Christmas Fruit Sale fundraiser »» Celebrated National FFA Week with a school chapel video, trivia and newsletter »» Began Corn Test Plot with LL alums M/M Steve Dewey (farm), Kevin Voigt (Legacy seed), Cody Aiken (Jung seed genetics) »» Hosted 1st Annual Banquet in May »» A dozen members will be exhibiting animals, crops, foods, woodwork and more at the Jefferson County Fair this summer, and more at other county fairs.
