Celebrate your true freedom “Let freedom ring.”
Throughout the summer months, America becomes more consciously patriotic. Beginning with Memorial Day, then progressing to Flag Day, the 4th of July, and closing with Labor Day, feelings of national pride abound. Whether patriotism is displayed through apparel, celebrations, or food, Americans seem to forget their differences and pull together as a nation for a time. As Christians, there is nothing wrong with celebrating the freedom our government provides. After all, “the authorities that exist have been established by God” (Romans 13:1). God establishes government for our benefit and for the well-being of society. But Christians know that nothing in life lasts forever. Regardless of how durable institutions and ideologies appear, they will eventually end. God causes all things— including government—to function as he wills for the glory of his holy name. Summer’s celebrations are good times for us to reflect on the true freedom that God gives us through our Savior. Born as slaves and captives of sin, Christ became our liberator. Through his perfect life, his innocent sufferings and death, and his glorious resurrection, God’s Son gives us a true and eternal freedom. Enjoy the parades, the fireworks, and proudly display the red, white and blue. But allow these trappings to be simple reminders of the true freedom from sin, death, and Satan that Christ gives to all who trust in him. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” (Gal. 5:1). “Let freedom ring.”. Mr. Jim Grasby is principal of LLHS.
