Fed eration Connection Let summer be growing season The school year has ended. For three months, students will enjoy summer vacation.

Research shows that summer vacation hinders student learning. During this downtime, the average student loses two-and-half months of math computation skills. Reading and spelling skills also regress. Such losses often follow a student through high school and college.

Church attendance also declines in summer. Perhaps the relaxed pace of the season causes usually faithful Christians to “take a vacation” from God’s house. They may think, “What can a little time off from church possibly hurt?” God commands us to regularly gather with fellow believers and be fed with his Word. Through his writer to the Hebrews, he states, “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25). In Acts, Luke writes, “[The early Christians] devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts” (Acts 2:42, 46). He also points out that “[the Bereans] received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true” (Acts 17:11). Absence from God’s house and inactivity in his Word at any time harms spiritual growth. Although research cannot quantitatively measure spiritual loss, Satan, the “roaring lion,” (1 Peter 5:8) uses any downtime from regular worship and daily contact with God’s Word to create doubt in believers’ hearts about our Lord and his promises. The immediate effect is that trust in the Lord erodes. Sad to say, such losses often follow Christians through their lives—possibly into eternity. Don’t allow summer vacation to be a license for inactivity in worship and contact with God’s Word. Rather, use the summer months as your God-given opportunity and privilege to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). Mr. Jim Grasby is principal of LLHS.
