Phillips Brooks, the author of O Little Town of Bethlehem, wrote:
These words perfectly capture Easter’s spirit. They declare that Christ rose from the dead. More importantly, they confidently state that all believers in Jesus will also rise from the dead. We certainly hear this truth on Easter Sunday. But, the joyous sensation may last only a short time before we return to our old ways. Instead of focusing on our risen Savior, we become “navel gazers,” preoccupied with the here-and-now. We no longer look to the skies anticipating Jesus’ return. Rather, we look downward at our own miserable condition caused by sin. Christ’s resurrection points to our resurrection. Brooks’ words above—drawn from 1 Corinthians 15—give the reason for true Easter joy. In that chapter, Paul discusses Christ’s resurrection, the resurrection of the dead, and finally the transformation of the believer’s resurrected body. Near the chapter’s end, Paul proclaims,
[55-57]. Paul’s inspired words turn us from our own sinful state to the glory of Christ’s resurrection. They guide us from the here-and-now to heaven’s future glories. They give all believers in Christ joy, hope, and confidence in their own resurrection made possible by his resurrection. To paraphrase Brooks, “Let us say not merely, ‘Christ is risen,’ but ‘we shall rise.’” God bless your Easter victory celebration! Mr. Jim Grasby is principal of LLHS.
