Here your partnership offers Lakeside students interested in the in-demand culinary arts the opportunity to develop these skills. The need for Foods and Consumer Education (FACE) will never fade, but facilities and equipment become outdated and worn, as is the case with ours. Worship the true reason in 2015 It is unique how religious the world becomes at times.

Every year, Christmas carols dominate the malls and radio stations. Television offers a host of Christmas specials. People who are often less than civil display all manner of civility in name of the true spirit of Christmas.

What is the true spirit of Christmas?

It’s not found in malls. It’s not on radio or television.

Especially, it’s not seen in human actions. Those items each have a purpose, and displaying the true spirit of Christmas is not one of them.

The true spirit of Christmas is found in the One who began Christmas: God himself.

Already in Eden, God made it clear that mankind sinned and ruined creation. There was no hope, but only misery and despair.

However, God then revealed his plan to send the Savior to “crush [Satan’s] head” [Genesis 3:15]. It would be the only way to meet God’s righteous demands. It would produce true righteousness between God and man, but it would cost the Savior his life.

Each century, God’s plan unfolded. Holy writers and prophets revealed one clue after another in the plan of salvation. Finally, “when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship” [Galatians 4:4-5].

This is the true spirit of Christmas: God’s wonderful, undeserved love for sinners.

Christ became what he was not in order that we might become what we are not.

Enjoy the season: the shopping, the music, and the television shows. Yet know full well that the true spirit of Christmas is God’s great love and mercy shown in Christ Jesus, our Savior.

Hahn’s 20 years of service at LLHS “have been a joy”

Teens for Christ direct school-wide collection for Malawi

This article is 13th in a series of faculty and staff responses to why they’re thankful to serve at your Lakeside, along with recollections of moments that demonstrate the value of the investment of time and resources for the families who choose LLHS for their children.

On my way from Nebraska to Fond du Lac for a YMCA directors interview, I stopped in New Ulm to visit our teacher training school. I planned only to visit, but ended up enrolling to get my Synodical certification.

Mr. Gerald “Jerry” Hahn is the middle of his 20th year at Lakeside, where he currently serves as A.D. baseball and football coach and PhyEd instructor, but has also taught social studies and religion classes.

Says Coach Hahn: “What a joy it has been.

Students graduate and new students arrive, but the message that we are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus does not change. I have been privileged to be a part of this ministry where parents have entrusted their children to us, the faculty and staff of LLHS. There is no greater joy than knowing that I will spend an eternity in heaven with those I taught and with all the colleagues who joined with me in sharing that eternal message. God has truly blessed my 20 years at Lakeside.”

Since that time it has been a joy to serve in our WELS elementary and secondary schools. My first call was tutor at Michigan Lutheran Seminary, then as the first teacher and principal at Memorial Lutheran in Williamston, MI, followed by 14 years at St. Mark’s in Watertown, where I am still a member.

The Teens for Christ group at Lakeside Lutheran High School recently collected thousands of school and craft supply items and almost $1,000 in donations for a WELS Kingdom Workers-sponsored “Christmas for Kids in Malawi” mission trip.

Spearheaded by Lakeside students Jennifer Schubkegel, Waterloo, Patience Letko, Lake Mills, and Brittni Jegerlehner, Sun Prairie, along with Teens for Christ advisor, Ruth Hirschfeld, the school-wide effort sent several suitcases of supplies along with Kingdom Worker volunteers, who spent December in Africa to help host a Christmas Bible School for over 1,000 children in and around Blantyre, Malawi.

“My teaching career began at Hay Springs High School in Nebraska after my graduation from Chadron State College. The thought of teaching in our WELS schools never crossed my mind, but God guides and directs our paths in many wonderful ways. It was in his plan that I spend some time in the U.S. Army, working with children whose fathers were in Vietnam. Afterward I went back

My wife, Anita, and I thank St. Mark’s congregation and the Lakeside Federation for your part in sharing the gospel message with our children Cathy (‘95), Aaron (‘00), Greg (‘02), and Becky (‘05). Thank you to our sister school, Luther Prep, for the four years given our son Rodney (‘98). Christian education is a shared responsibility. Thank God for the many wonderful people who have been instrumental in our lives and the lives of our children.”

Over 1,000 children in and around Blantyre, Malawi enjoyed the craft collection efforts of teens at Lakeside Lutheran. WELS Kingdom Workers volunteers assist two congregations with “Christmas For Kids” in local village congregations of the Lutheran Church of Central Africa (LCCA). Pictured here are children running to attend the program in December 2014.

The group used announcements and posters over a three-week period to encourage all students to bring in supplies for collection. Organizing students also hosted two before-school fundraisers during those weeks –a donut and cider sale, and a bake sale. Cider and donut donations came from area businesses Beauty and the Bean in Fort Atkinson and Jensen’s Piggly Wiggly in Juneau; the bake sale consisted of homemade goods. Faculty and staff joined in with donations, and the Teens group also applied for and received a Jefferson County Chapter of Thrivent Financial Youth Minigrant for the project.

The supply collection totaled 4,522 crayons, 5,750 lunch bags, 2,525 envelopes, 9,050 ​cotton balls, 1,980 sheets of construction paper and 20+ yarn skeins that were used to support the Bible stories taught at the mission school. Some of the proceeds from the sales purchased nativity scene stickers, Bible-based Christmas stickers, nativity finger puppets and masks, with the balance also sent to Africa to further support the Christmas for Kids program.

The three volunteers who spent December in Malawi include two Lakeside alumni, Mary (Duncan ’04) Lindloff and Anna Hirschfeld ’05, and Amanda Pelischek.

Malawian children ran to hear about Jesus and work with the supplies at the Christmas camps. Virtually none had ever seen or worked with things we take for granted every day, like crayons and stickers.
