Ever felt like you’ve lost your edge? “He lost his edge.” It is sad when someone loses his edge. A well-known, once-agile athlete might try a comeback after an injury or retirement only to be cut by his new team. The respected, knowledgeable teacher might hang on a year too long leaving his students to wonder why he deserved the accolades in the first place. A oncefamous actor returns to the stage after years of receiving lesser roles only to be trashed by the critics. In each situation, the individual may have lost his edge. This even happens to God’s people at times. The Bible warns us, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” [1 Peter 5:8]. Christians must always be on guard against Satan’s attacks, along with those of the world and our own sinful flesh. Yet, at times, believers trifle with sin: a seemingly harmless pet sin, a sin that everyone is doing, or a sin that we know is harmful. We put down our guard, lose our edge, and invite disaster. For our sakes, our Savior never lost his edge. He is eternally consistent. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” [Heb. 13:8]. He is eternally loving. “I have loved you with an everlasting love” [Jer. 31:3]. He is eternally holy. “You are to be holy to me because I, the Lord, am holy” [Lev. 20:26]. Christ evens makes us holy with his precious blood shed on the cross. When we lose our edge in sinfulness, Jesus does not. For this, we thank him with our words, actions and thoughts. It is sad when someone we respect has lost his edge. It is sadder when this happens to a believer as he falls into sin. Thankfully, we have a Savior who never lost his edge. He met his heavenly Father’s demands for perfection and credits that to us by faith. Mr. Jim Grasby is principal of Lakeside Lutheran; his column is featured each issue.
