Fed eration Connection Forgiveness is part of everyday life. After all, we are imperfect humans who sin daily. When we sin, we sin against someone – be it God (all sin is against God), another person, or ourselves. What occurs after we sin is important for us to understand. Jesus makes two points clear in his classic teaching on forgiving others recorded in Matthew 18. He begins, “If your brother sins against you” (Matthew 18:15). Jesus knows that people will sin against one another. It is here where the two previous questions are answered.

Must I forgive? Jesus says yes. In three different scenarios, he urges those who have been wronged to meet the transgressor in order to forgive him. “Go and show him his fault…take one or two others along…tell it to the church” (Matthew 18:15, 16, and 17). Yes, we must forgive. May I forgive? After all, do I, as a sinner, have the right to discuss his sinful actions person with him? Jesus makes it clear that it is our duty. The purpose is that he will listen and we will have “won [our] brother over” (Matthew 18:15). Forgiving others clears consciences— ours as well as theirs—so that we both stand forgiven before God. Yes, we may forgive. Forgiveness. Must I? May I? The answer is absolutely yes! We have our Savior’s command and assurance that forgiving others is the right thing to do. God give us spirits that are quick to forgive when we are wronged. It is your will. Mr. Jim Grasby is principal of Lakeside Lutheran; his column is featured every FedCon.
