Fed eration Connection Of all genres of reality TV, home improvement shows are among the most popular. Viewers learn ideas and techniques while watching pros and amateurs attempt renovations and repairs.
One common phrase on many of these shows is “must haves”— items that homeowners must have to complete the project. “Must haves” often include granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, a large deck, or an en suite bathroom. Although these items may not appeal to everyone, some property owners “must have” them for the project to be satisfactory. What your “must haves” in life? A comfortable lifestyle? A new car or boat? A happy family? Although these items are certainly desirable, God defines our must haves with the words, “But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that” (1 Timothy 6:8, NIV). God is not saying that a simple life with few material blessings is more precious than saving faith. But He does infer that our “must haves” often interfere with our spiritual life. Having too much may tempt us to place those things before God. “[God’s] thoughts are not [our] thoughts, neither are [our] ways [God’s] ways” (Isaiah 55:8, NIV). God alone knows what is best for us. Sin distorts our thinking and destroys our sense of priorities. God knows which of his answers to our prayers—yes, no, or not yet —is best. For his loving care, he deserves all our praise and glory. After all, God gave us the most important must have of all: righteousness through his Son who suffered and died for our sins and rose again in victory. It’s not wrong to desire some “must haves” in our lives. However, the only “must have” this side of eternity is the relationship that God establishes for us through faith in Christ Jesus.
