Fed eration Connection Giving up can be a good thing Many on social media sites recently announced: During Lent, I will not use this or any other form of social media. It’s estimated that 40% of all Americans observe the Lenten season by sacrificing “something” from their personal lives.

Why do people practice self-denial and self-sacrifice, especially during Lent? Some cite it as a practice from medieval Christianity that people do to gain God’s favor. Others see it as a means to free up time for self-reflection to become more focused on their personal lives. However, to correctly understand Lenten self-denial, consider our Savior’s words in Luke 9: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” [Luke 9:23, NIV 2011]. >> “Must deny themselves.” At our core is the drive for self-fulfillment. After all, our Old Adam preaches, “It’s all about me!” Christ commands us to say “no” to ourselves, our selfcentered ways, and our selfish dreams because they contradict what he wants.

Your Lakeside Lutheran High School is ready to host another Community Electronics Recycling Event! Last year, nine hours resulted in 3.5 semi loads of recycling PLUS a semi load of appliances and scrap metal. Thanks to all who participated! This year’s dates are Friday, April 11, 3:30-6pm & Saturday, April 12, 7am-2pm. Most electronics and appliances are accepted for recycling. (Refrigerators are NOT accepted. Scrap metal, however, is on the accepted list. Go to llhs.org/recycling.html to download a flyer that lists all recyclable items.) Sample of Acceptable Items: ** Items do not have to be in working condition ** computers, stereos, copiers, handheld electronics, phones, cameras, hair dryers, remotes, toaster ovens, fans, metal tools, vacuums, and much more. Bring your items to the “bus barn” in the west end parking lot anytime during the hours listed. Volunteers can help unload and get you back on your way in no time!

>> “Take up their cross daily.” The Romans were the masters of crucifixion. In Jesus’ day, those condemned to die by crucifixion were forced to carry their crosses to the crucifixion site as a prelude of what was to come. Jesus did not literally mean that all Christians would be crucified as he later was. Rather, to “take up their cross” refers to a willingness to suffer for Christ by faith, not flee from it. But what about the word daily? In addition to our willingness to suffer for our faith in Christ, we should be willing to face this suffering every day as our way of life. >> “Follow me.” Following Jesus means to honor him as your Leader, your Master, and your Lord. From the moment you become his disciple by faith, you desire what he wants. You are no longer in control; rather, Christ lives in you and guides you in his ways.

It is not wrong to practice self-denial and sacrifice during Lent if done for the correct reasons. It serves as a reminder of our Savior’s sacrifice on the cross to remove our guilt and condemnation. God bless your Lenten observance and your joyous Easter celebration! Mr. Jim Grasby is principal of Lakeside Lutheran; his column is featured every FedCon. Reach him at 920.648.2321 x 2204
