Fed eration Connection
The only thing constant is...change? Change. Many people do not like change because it means… change! Humans often appreciate the status quo for comfort’s sake. Yet, change still occurs. Recently, our synod discussed the options of changing to a recommended Bible translation for worship and publication since the NIV 1984 is no longer produced. Various translations —including one of our own doing—were considered. In the end, PRINCIPAL’S PEN convention delegates voted neither to adopt the NIV’s successor (or any other current translation) nor pursue a WELS Bible translation project. A new committee will monitor other translations as they undergo revision. Change. Sometimes it is forced. At other times it is chosen. In our lives of faith, one thing will (and must) never change: our appreciation of and our reliance on God’s Word. It is the powerful, life-giving means by which God’s Holy Spirit creates, sustains, and nurtures saving faith. Figuratively, we place the Word of God on a pedestal because it is God’s Word. Through it, he speaks the things he would have us know and believe. God blesses Christian churches that place a premium on his Word as the inerrant source of eternal truth. Through them, he equips his saints with a solid foundation on which saving faith is built. Believers who prize God’s Word are well-equipped to meet the storms of life, as well as its temptations, with full trust that God controls all events to glorify his name. Change. It stirs emotions. It produces unintended results. Yet, human change contrasts with the unchanging Word of an unchanging God who gave his Son to be our Savior from sin.
