Holy Spirit who produces good works. Actions like compassion for the lost, love for others, and a desire for evangelism result from the Spirit’s work in us through faith. Once again, Paul explains, “Those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires” (Romans 8:5).

Humans will always search for means of personal self-improvement. Some may work; others amount to nothing. We believers thank God that he supplies not only the means of change through his Word, but he also gives the power to grow in faith through his Holy Spirit.

3 steps to success In recent years, there has been a rash of self-help and personal improvement books. Many offer lists of the characteristics necessary for personal success, growth and goal actualization.

Although Christianity has no comprehensive list of characteristics to be successful believers, God’s Word offers guidelines that we Christians should faithfully pursue in our lives. >> Christians are into the Word of God. God identifies his Word as the sole means to change our sinful hearts. He says through Isaiah, “So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11). The Word of God and the sacraments – the visible gospel – are God’s life-changing, faithbuilding Means of Grace by which he offers forgiveness of sin, life and salvation. >> Christians believe the message. Hearing the Word of God is one thing; believing it is something else. Paul told the Romans, “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17). Scripture’s words would fall to the ground ineffectually if God did not also make the connection within us. He does this through his Holy Spirit.

Again, it is Paul who explains the Spirit’s work when he writes, “You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11). >> Finally, Christians live our faith. student news and notes Warrior marchers witness while they grow and explore

It officially begins on a Wednesday evening in May, though the preparations have been already in play for months. It’s the start of the 2013 Warrior marching season, the first practice! This is new teacher Glen Pufahl’s first season as director, but he’s surrounded by veterans, including percussion specialist Brett Duwe and marching coach Jeff Luedtke, as well as an experienced crew of “Music Parents” who ready the uniforms, handle the paperwork, prepare meals, drive bus, chaperone the parades and more. He’s also been blessed with LLHS alumni who helped coach this up and coming wave of proud Warrior marchers, including Danny Hafenstein ‘11 (percussion), Lynette Schliewe ‘12 and Emma Lipasti ‘12 (colorguard). The band has already been in Brillion, Appleton, Verona and Jackson, with several more to go (see below). And this was a short tour summer—next year they’ll be back on the road to a far away destination that in the past has included Florida, the East coast, and of course, the famous Calgary trips! Says MPO parent Tracey Hill, “I have been blessed to be involved in this for the past 3 years, seeing how hard the kids work, friendships grow, and the pay off in the end: the parades! FUN!!”

Sharon Yanggen retires after 49 years of service

“Lakeside was from the very beginning a “family” of Christians working together. I remember many people who would never have the benefit of sending their children to this school, spent hours working here so that future generations could be taught God’s Word in all their classes at this important stage of their life. What vision, what a blessing!”

As Lakeside bids a fond farewell to this dear face daily in the office, it seems appropriate to go into history to share a few parting thoughts. Sharon attended the Cornerstone Laying Service and Service of Dedication for Lakeside in 1963, along with over 4,000 other supporters of Christian secondary education. On September 8, 1964, she began as secretary at LLHS. “As the school grew, the hours did become long sometimes, but it was always a joy to serve,” says Sharon. Many things have changed since that first day: there were no sidewalks, no paved parking lot (only gravel and sand), no homes across the street. Each day began with chapel in the cafeteria (they stood). At lunch time they all prayed and ate together in one period. Roller-skating parties, ski trips, creation science trips, faculty-senior basketball games have given way to more musical and athletic events. But some things never change. Says Sharon, “Students come in as apprehensive freshmen and leave as young adults grounded in God’s Word, ready to face the challenges of the world. Through eight different principals, dozens of faculty and staff and hundreds of board members, all have had one purpose: to serve faithfully with gifts God has given them, and I have had the privilege to work for each of them.”
