your lakeside earns accreditation Lakeside was notified last month that it has earned accreditation from the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), an accreditation division of AdvancED. This nationally-recognized accreditation requires recertification every five years and emphasizes continuous school improvement focused on increasing student performance. To earn accreditation, schools must meet NCA CASI’s high standards, be evaluated by a team of professionals from outside the school and implement a continuous process of school improvement.

Principal Grasby shares, “Accreditation demonstrates to our students, parents and community that we are focused on raising student achievement, providing a safe and enriching learning environment, and maintaining an efficient and effective operation staffed by highly qualified educators.”

Who’s your shepherd?

Three weeks after Easter, the Christian Church celebrates Good Shepherd Sunday. We focus on Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who laid down his life to save his sinful sheep. The readings, hymns and prayers of the service that day highlight this central truth.

The image of the Good Shepherd may well be the most meaningful illustration that humans could have of their Savior. As our Good Shepherd, Jesus daily provides for our physical needs and—most importantly—our spiritual ones. By God’s grace, Jesus sends his Holy Spirit to equip us with saving faith from hearing his Word. By faith, we have a true love for the Good Shepherd, bringing joy and peace into our lives from sins forgiven. That assurance also produces “patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” in us. (Galatians 5:22-23) Still, our Good Shepherd supplies even more. He sets before us the heavenly green pastures. For eternity, Jesus promises true joy and peace to all believers. When our Good Shepherd returns to bring us to heaven, we will join every creature to proclaim, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!”

Revelation 5:13) Truly, Jesus is our Good Shepherd.

student news and notes May brings celebrations of God-given gifts and abilities Your Lakeside Lutheran is proud to announce and celebrate achievements of its class of 2013. Lakeside has a strong tradition of graduating outstanding scholars and achievers, and we commend them on the stewardship of their gifts. Even more treasured, however, is the Lakeside legacy of sharing God’s grace with all our students, every day of their high school lives. God’s continued blessings on our graduates, as they go on to new experiences and lives that glorify their Savior.

Kohl foundation excellence Scholarship We are also pleased to announce that senior Ryan Broedlow was awarded a Herb Kohl Excellence Scholarship.

According to the Kohl Foundation, “Excellence Scholarship recipients have demonstrated excellence in the academic arena and high motivation to achieve, have displayed a broad range of activity and leadership outside the academic setting, and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond.” Ryan, son of Kevin & Holly Broedlow of Helenville, plans to attend UW– Whitewater for accounting and finance. athletic scholarships send graduates around midwest+ Four seniors have received scholarships to attend college and participate in certain sports. We’re proud of the strong history of student-athletes that the Lakeside Lutheran athletic program fosters. mr. westphal retires after 43 years God’s direction for life...go West in the Fall

I am often asked: how long has it been? Well, for 60 years I have traveled West in the fall to attend school; the last 43 of those have been as a teacher here at Lakeside. It’s only fitting for a guy whose name is Westphal.

As sinful human beings, we often head in the opposite direction. The older I get, the more I realize that God has only one direction for our lives. If we are headed in the right direction, we are focused on Jesus Christ. And that is the focus of Lakeside Lutheran High School.

My Boss is a Jewish Carpenter: these are the words that greet students as they enter the Industrial Technology classroom. It is a great reminder for all of us. Who is in control of our lives? Are we following his directions?

Industrial Technology, Industrial Arts, Practical Arts—they were all names for the area in which I have taught for 43 years. As an old guy, I rather like that oldest name, Practical Arts, because it focuses on the practical hands-on type of education I have shared with

my students. Unlike some teachers, I am seldom asked the question, “Why do we have to learn this?”

As I taught Woods I, Cabinetmaking, Welding, Metals, Construction, Small Engines, Drafting and Architectural Design, I found that most students really appreciated the practical application to life, and perhaps even a future career.

Graduates have become welders, cabinetmakers, draftsmen, architects, mechanics, contractors, technicians and —don’t forget—homeowners. I have seen three generations of students, with various talents and abilities, who realize that God has given each of us special gifts. Helping students discover their God-given talents has been my greatest joy.

But finally, the practical focus in our lives must be our ultimate focus on Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. So, no matter which direction life takes you: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” (Col. 3:23) Thank you for the privilege to serve at Lakeside Lutheran High School.

class of 2013 academic top ten Lakeside is pleased to name five who have tied GPA for valedictorianship in the class of 2013. They are Ethan Brockmann, Bethany, Fort Atkinson; Ryan Broedlow, St. Peter, Helenville; Leah Fax, Eastside, Madison; Victoria Janikowski, Resurrection, Verona; and Sarah Melcher, Immanuel, Farmington. This year’s salutatorian is Brianna Berkevich, St. Stephen, Beaver Dam. Rounding out the top 10 in GPA are Rachel Glaeske, St. Matthew, Oconomowoc; Charlotte Huebner, Peace, Sun Prairie; Sarah Hackbarth, St. Paul, Lake Mills; and Whitney Kulow, Abiding Shepherd, Cottage Grove. Congratulations to these scholars and their families; our prayer is that they continue as they have to use their gifts and abilities to serve their Savior in whatever their future endeavors include!
