The Bucket List

Popularized in a 2007 movie, bucket list is a cultural idiom. It means unfinished actions or unrealized hopes that people wish to complete before they die. Bucket lists vary by individuals. Typical items may include attending the Daytona 500, traveling to Tahiti, or walking the Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day. Even Christians have bucket lists. What’s on your bucket list? The Apostle Paul wrote, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). Paul was literally a prisoner for the gospel. However, in spite of his predicament, his hope and fulfillment were found in his faith in Jesus and the salvation that he offers. Paul knew—as we all know—that life is temporary. It lasts as long as God determines. Throughout life, God gives every person opportunities to hear Him speak through his Word, to receive the gift of saving faith through the Holy Spirit, and to grow in faith in Jesus Christ. God does this because he loves us and knows that we sinners need him and the forgiveness that he offers. The end result is that—by faith—we view this world and our lives as transitory. We wait patiently for the eternal life to come. Regardless of what’s on your bucket list, don’t forget to include “living with Jesus for eternity in heaven.” This blessed event—the best of all events—is a must for every Christian’s bucket list.
