alum to serve in africa The 10:15 worship service on Sunday, March 10 at St. Paul, Ixonia will include the commissioning of Lakeside 2006 graduate Megan Behl, RN, BSN for the WELS Central Africa Medical Mission. Megan joins our team serving medical needs of the people in Lilongwe, Malawi, through the Lutheran Mobile Clinic. A presentation on Malawi mission work is 9–10 AM. CAMM was formed 50+ years ago to assist missionaries in caring for physical needs of local people, giving missionaries more opportunity to focus on spiritual needs. Megan will live and serve for three years in Malawi, where four days per week she will drive with local staff to one of four remote villages to help an average of 200 patients per day. Each village has a permanent building that serves as both church and clinic. Every day is begun with devotion by the pastor and a hot meal is available at noon. Learn more March 10!

• Plan to attend Family Fest on the first Saturday in March, anytime from 9 AM to noon. This carnivalthemed event is a perennial hit with PK–4 graders, who play games, see magic, make crafts and win prizes. It’s $5 per child but no more than $10 per family, so bring the whole crew!

• The Lakeside Spelling Bee has been rescheduled to better meet some school schedules. The new date is March 9, still at 9 AM. • The A Cappella Choir leaves for its biennial spring break tour. Two years ago it was California, and this year it’s Arizona! Choir members are hosted by and will sing for WELS churches including Emmanuel Lutheran in Tempe, King of Kings in Apache Junction, Shepherd of the Hills and Redeemer in Tuscon, and Grace in San Carlos. The choir also plans to sing at a Brewers game and Sedona’s Chapel of the Holy Cross, along with a tour of the Canyon.

You are valuable Have you ever watched “Antique Roadshow”? People bring an object to an appraiser. The object doesn’t look valuable—it’s old or dusty or faded. The appraiser examines it and declares its worth at thousands of dollars, to the delight of the owner. It didn’t look valuable, but it was.

At times, you may not think you are valuable, but you are. God is the “appraiser;” as he examines you, he declares you to be very valuable, and he gives you three reasons, based on the three articles of the Apostles’ Creed.

Creation: You are valuable, first of all, because you are God’s personal handiwork: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb” (Ps. 139:13).

God personally designed your soul and body. He is the artist, and his signature is on you. This makes you valuable.

Redemption: Do you realize how much God spent to buy you? “It was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed… but with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18-19). You’re only worth as much as someone is willing to pay. How much is the blood of God’s Son worth? Trillions? More than that. God paid a very high price to buy you. This makes you valuable.

Sanctification: Consider who lives inside of you— God himself: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you?” (1 Cor. 6:19).

The White House is valuable because its resident is the President. You are more valuable because the Spirit of God lives in you.

The next time you look in the mirror and think, “I’m worthless,” think again. You are priceless, because God made you, bought you, and lives within you.

Another contest for grade school students— come on & join the fun!

Lakeside Forensic team takes third straight Capitol Conference title 25-member team works alone & together to excel at oratory Poetry: 1st place, senior Nathan Bartels (Holy Cross, Madison) Moment in History: 1st place, junior Jordan Gaal (St. Matthew, Oconomowoc) Playacting: 1st place tie, seniors Sarah Melcher (Immanuel, Farmington) & Kalie Kulow (St. Paul, Lake Mills); and seniors Abby Reimer (Resurrection,Verona) & Abbi Robbins (Trinity, Watertown) Public Address: 2nd place, junior Amanda Kehl (Zion, Columbus) With such strong individual and team results, the entire 25-member Lakeside forensic team moves ahead to the next stage of competition.

After earning the Wisconsin Excellence in Speech Award for the past three years by finishing in the top 5% of all schools in the state, your Lakeside Lutheran forensic team is once again off to an impressive start in 2013. The season began at DeForest High School in January, when the Lakeside team placed fifth among very strong teams statewide.

On February 4, Lakeside competed with over 160 students at the Capitol Conference Tournament in Poynette.

Among the 11 conference schools performing in 16 different speaking categories, Lakeside earned the championship with 297 points, ahead of second and third place teams Luther Prep and Lodi High School.

Leading the way in their individual categories were the following students: Extemporaneous: 1st place, sophomore Kirkland Hill (St. Paul, Lake Mills) Farrago: tie for 1st place, seniors Vicki Janikowski (Resurrection,Verona) and Leah Fax (Peace, Sun Prairie) Four-Minute Speech: 2nd place, junior Jason Werre (Peace, Sun Prairie)

Radio Speaking: 1st place, senior Alex Loroff (St. Paul, Lake Mills); 2nd place, freshman David Wilson (St. John, Pardeeville)

The Winter 2012-13 edition of the Lakeside Advantage magazine offers a contest that asks K–8 to think of stuff that’s pretty cool about Lakeside Lutheran High School, and let us know.

We’ll collect all entries in by the deadline and create a list of ten based on both random picks and selected ones. The list will appear around school, in the next issue of the Advantage and who knows where! (Entry deadline is March 11, 2013. Be sure to read the full rules in the magazine. Dozens of students had fun while they served to make the evening a success, whether it was in set up, musical performance, meal service, or, as was the case with these upperclassmen, as social hour hosts. After Sub-districts at Edgerton High School at the end of February, the team advances to the District Meet on March 14 at Madison LaFollette HS. If it continues the outstanding record established in prior years, the team would then advance to the State Tournament at The University of Wisconsin in Madison on April 19.

New to this year’s Grand Event was a “dessert auction.” 18 donors created 33 breathtakingly gorgeous and delicious desserts. Guests then had the opportunity to get “first pick” of the dessert display with the highest table donation total. Everyone was a winner no matter which sweet treat was chosen, and the dessert auction “bids” amounted to over $2,600.00!
