Each year the media report on peoples’ New Year’s resolutions. Soon afterwards, the follow up reports state how quickly these resolutions are broken. Wouldn’t it be nice if New Years resolutions were actually kept? For Christians, the new year may include earthly resolutions. However, Christians have a resolution that will not be broken because it is based on the One who is faithful in every way. The writer to the Hebrews emphasizes our family bond with Jesus. He writes, “Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers” (2:11). This thought leads to the ultimate purpose of Christ’s life. “[Christ] too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death – that is, the devil – and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death…that he might make atonement for the sins of the people” (2:14,15,17). Jesus became fully human, lived the holy life we could not, and destroyed Satan’s hold on us to offer the sure and joyful hope of heaven. This means that salvation does not depend on mankind’s efforts. Rather, it depends solely on our brother, Jesus. It is his remarkable act of self-sacrifice that is undeniably history’s greatest act of love. So, what is the Christian’s resolution? It is to commit to live a life of faith and godly action in thanks for this divine gift. It is not a personal choice or conscious determination. It is solely by God’s grace. God even supports us. At the end of this section, the holy writer states, “Because [Jesus] himself suffered when he was — see Principal’s Pen, inside
