Items of Interest Here’s more detail about an upcoming event: • Veterans Day Celebration is a campus event honoring current servicepeople and veterans with breakfast, a keynote talk and an opportunity to worship in a special Veterans Day Chapel Service with the student body. Guest speaker is Mr. James Bublitz, a veteran who most recently has been active with the Honor Flight program, a non-profit organization created to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. The Honor Flight Program transports veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials, with top priority given to senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with other veterans who face a terminal illness. If you wish to attend Lakeside’s Veterans Day celebration on November 9, please let us know as soon as possible. E-mail Bari Vredeveld at bvredeve@ llhs.org or call her at (920) 648-2321 extension 2223.

At this time of year, the changes are noticeable. Darkness increasingly overtakes light. Once-green leaves—now gold, rust and brown— fall from trees. Birds migrate. At night, the air chills. Although this change may seem a “destructive” end to summer, it also speaks a hidden message—one of stability and God’s love. In the Old Testament, God sent a universal Flood upon the world due to mankind’s sinfulness. It was God’s act of judgment upon sinners after graciously permitting them 120 years to repent. At the same time, it was an act of grace to protect Seth’s believing descendents, keeping the promise of the Savior alive. In the Flood’s 375 days, the world utterly changed. All who rejected God in sinful unbelief were gone. The earth’s surface was drastically altered. Animal life and vegetation were affected. When the Flood fully receded, God permitted Noah and the others in the ark to reenter the world. Noah “built an altar to the Lord and…sacrificed burnt offerings on it” (Genesis 8:20). A burnt offering was an act of total devotion: the fire consumed the sacrifice as a sign of absolute commitment to God. Moses notes that “the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma” (v. 21), a figurative expression indicating God’s delight. Following God’s promise never again to send another universal flood, he said, “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease” (v. 22). At first, these words may seem out of place. However, they demonstrate God’s resolve to restore order to a flood-ravaged world. Standard time units—seedtime and harvest, day and night, and even seasons—were reestablished and will remain in place until God chooses to — see Principal’s Pen, inside
