Federation Connection October 2012

In his Concord Hymn, Ralph Waldo Emerson first coined the phrase “the shot heard ‘round the world.” That phrase—used in reference to the start of the American Revolution—has since been used to describe other historical and cultural events of significance. As Lutheran Christians, what would we consider “the shot heard ‘round the world”? We could certainly cite the Creation, mankind’s fall into sin and God’s promise of a Savior, or even the PRINCIPAL’S PEN birth, death and resurrection of Christ. However, as October nears, a more recent event may well stand out in importance to us: the Reformation. Living in an age of human reason and tradition, Martin Luther studied Scripture and discovered that God justifies mankind by grace alone through faith in his Son. This was a revolutionary belief in a society that accepted good works and money as key elements of salvation. Even threatened with imprisonment and death, Luther maintained his trust in Jesus alone as the world’s only Redeemer from sin. On October 31, 1517, Luther posted his Ninety-Five Theses on the door of All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg. The message spread quickly throughout Europe in two months. Eventually, the message overturned empires, realigned nations and brought joy to millions at the good news of the pure gospel. Truly, the pounding of the hammer on the church door proved to be “the shot heard ‘round the world.” In the past 500 years, the world has not really changed. Religions still propose alternate ways to salvation through mankind’s efforts. As in Luther’s day, people today still do “not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear” (2 Timothy 4:3). Yet over this clamor, the clear sound of the hammer at Wittenberg reminds us of the saving treasure of God’s Word that is ours through the work of Luther and others — see Principal’s Pen, inside
