As with any proper introduction, it’s good to start with a hello. Let me introduce you to these five chakra gems.

YOUR EIGHTH CHAKRA: CHAKRA : This silvery-black energy

body lies a few inches above your head. Enter this chakra to engage in all kinds of wonderfully mystical shenanigans, such as conducting soulbased expeditions to otherworldly realms and planes of existence.

YOUR NINTH CHAKRA: CHAKRA : This golden orb is about an

arm’s length above your head and glows with a luminous mystique. Excelling at creating harmony, it also contains symbols that serve as codes to formulate health throughout your being.

this grounding energy center, often perceived as brown, oscillates with multiple functions. It connects you to this planet and the cosmos while managing your ancestral and environmental bonds.

center, which I usually perceive as opaque or translucent, is all about what makes you special— and spectacular. Develop this chakra to access and activate spiritual powers and knowledge that are singular to you.

Having said a brief hello to your out-of-body chakras, I hope you’re enthused for more. Within the pages of this book, you’ll be learning about these five extraordinary energy bodies through many lenses, including cross-cultural comparisons, color and sound analyses, functional capacities, and physical and psychological attributes. You’ll also enjoy related experiential practices so you can immediately benefit from what you have learned.

Before I outline the mission ahead, I want to quickly explain what chakras are and discuss how the chakra structure fits within the greater subtle anatomy.

We owe much of our chakra know-how to the ancient Hindus, who employed the Sanskrit language to designate 4

a chakra as a spinning wheel of light. Thousands of years ago, the term related to chariot wheels. As time elapsed, an entire system was developed connoting chakras as part of an energy system that carries life energy throughout the body and into the greater universe. In this progression, chakras emerged as a vital tool for everything from formulating good health to achieving an in-body state of enlightenment.

The most formative comprehension of the chakras started with the ancient Indian philosophical treatises called the Vedas, which illuminated these energy centers gradually between 1500 and 500 BCE. Chakra knowledge then spread into many versions of Hinduism and into other spiritual traditions including Buddhism and Tantra, although many scholars believe these ideas are older than that (Murray 2019; Schneider and Cooper 2019).

Chakra legends aren’t exclusive to these societies. Many other cultures have acknowledged the existence of comparable energy centers, including the ancient Incan, Cherokee, Hopi, Hebrew, Aztec, Berber, and African Kemetic groups.

(I’ll teach you a lot about chakra knowledge from various cultures in part 1.) Chakras are often equated with other forms of vibrational centers, such as the 107 marma energy centers that appear in Ayurvedic medicine and the acupoints of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), as well as the power centers of ancient Mayan communities. Whatever your own 5

ethnic background is, chances are that the spiritual medicine of your heritage has expounded upon these or similar energy bodies, the understanding of which has continued to evolve in concept and application into modern times.

Speaking of this evolution . . . these days, specific chakras are often linked to colors, sounds, mantras, foods, meditations, bodily stances, and so much more. You might already know that chakras are embraced in a variety of holistic practices, including yoga, which employs them as instruments to create balance and well-being.

On a more scientific basis, chakras are composed of oscillating fields of light and sound. In other words, like everything in this universe, they are energetic, with energy defined simply as “information that moves.” There are, however, two types of energy.

Physical, concrete energy underlies measurable reality.

Body-wise, this category of energy appears as physical organs, channels, and fields. However, more than 99.999 percent of any object, including your body, is made of subtle energy (Sundermier 2016). This type of energy—equivalent to intuitive, psychic, and quantum energies—is run by related structures. Replace physical organs like the lungs with chakras, bodily channels such as the circulatory system with meridians and nadis, and physical fields like brain waves with auric fields, and you get the idea. Together, 6

these three types of subtle structures add up to the subtle energy anatomy, also called the subtle body.

Furthermore, meridians are well-known subtle channels that flow through your connective tissue. They are a chief component of traditional Chinese medicine, although many other systems feature these or similar subtle energy riverways. Nadis are a Hindu construct and are usually compared to the nerves. Every chakra also emanates its own field of subtle energy, called an auric field or auric layer (see image on page 8). These individuated force fields encircle your body, one atop the other. Altogether, the entire sphere formulates the auric field. The layers assure protection and screen incoming and outgoing data for their related chakras as well as for the entire being, percolating along based on the programming inside their associated chakras. You’ll learn about the five auric fields related to your five extraordinary chakras in this book.

Let’s jump into the question that might be on the tip of your tongue: the rationale for believing there are five chakras beyond those anchored along the spine in the physical body.

First I want to point out that out-of-body chakras are more like their in-body counterparts than not. Each is a subtle center that is also linked to the physical form through an endocrine gland and an area of the body, and each regulates 7

physical, psychological, and spiritual considerations. From my point of view, one of the greatest contemporary chakra tragedies is that so many people believe in a rigid sevenchakra system. That is a gigantic misunderstanding.

The argument for the seven in-body chakra system is usually grounded in a 1919 book called The Serpent Power authored by Sir John Woodroffe (Avalon 1950). Most people believe that he showcased seven chakras in his work.

Factually, Woodroffe stated that there are only six chakras. He perceived the seventh as a distinctive energy center atop the head. He also made clear that in the ancient world, chakra systems revealed anywhere between three and dozens of chakras (Avalon 1950).

Numerous energetic systems prove this assertion. The Nath Charit outlines twelve chakras, as does a Shaiva text called the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra. The Siddha Siddhanta Paddhati reveals nine chakras, and the Netra Tantra describes six (Anderson 2018). Sri Amit Ray, a contemporary spiritual master, testifies to around 114 chakras (Ray 2017, 2019, 2020).

There are dozens of systems that profess extracurricular chakras. For one, I’ve already noted that Woodroffe considered the seventh (crown) chakra to be located outside of the body proper. The Tsalagi (Cherokee) system, portrayed by its current medicine woman, Dhyani Ywahoo, identifies 9

a chakra around the hands and feet, much like the eleventh chakra in the twelve-chakra system we’re covering (Dale 2009, 294). The ancient Ojos De Luz Incan energy system depicts two chakras over the head, beyond the crown chakra (Villoldo 2000), as does my model.

Contemporary expert and author David Furlong adds an eighth chakra beneath the earth. He bases his premise on cultures including Chinese, Tibetan, Celtic, shamanic, Kabbalistic, ancient Egyptian, and more (Furlong 2003).

One of my favorite chakra scholars is Hareesh Johari.

A tantric and Sanskrit scholar, he believed that Westerners understood little about chakras, including modern Indian yoga teachers and their teachings. He waxed poetic about the limitations of various systems, including flaws in Woodroffe’s presentation. He also pointed to scholars including the Theosophist Charles Leadbeater, who wrote a well-known chakra book in 1927, as well as other yoga gurus. According to Johari, we’re missing the point. While the history of chakras lies in tantric yoga, which flourished between 600 and 1300 CE, most branches of the tradition assumed a different number of chakras. We’re talking five, six, seven, nine, ten, twelve, or twenty-one chakras, and so on. In fact, Hareesh believed that the current Western yogi system was created by Purnananda Yati in a work called “Explanation of the Six Chakras” in 1577. It is this 10

version that was most likely put into place in the 1900s by Woodroffe. Paraphrasing Johari, the reason to learn and follow a chakra system is to put the chakras into practice. In other words, be prescriptive, not descriptive, and focus on what you can do with your knowing ( Johari 2016).

Case in point: This book is all about what you can accomplish through your five out-of-body chakras. In fact, part 2 is exclusively devoted to helping you make your life better, and part 1 includes several practices too.

Besides being a big researcher, there is another reason I’m a fan of beyond-the-body chakras: I have perceived them since I was a child.

Some of my earliest memories involved seeing colorful balls and streams of light surrounding people and animals.

I could view seven colored balls of energy emanating from their spines and five floating around their bodies, always in the same position. I had no label for subtle energy, but I’ve since learned that is what I was seeing.

As White Lutheran Protestants, my parents didn’t go for my oddities. They couldn’t find chakras in the Bible, though I have done so since then. No matter; I reveled in watching the beautiful hues of light, which often predicted moods, needs, desires, and feelings. When my mom frothed with bright red, the color of anger and passion, I hid. When my father glowed a pretty yellow, I felt safe. When he came 11

home from work and the color was a dirty yellow, I knew he would start drinking right away.

In my twenties, I began traveling the world to study with healers, shamans, intuitives, and gurus. No matter where I was—Japan, Peru, Venezuela, Morocco, Costa Rica, Belize, Russia—these healers believed in vibrational energy centers and other subtle structures. Further cross-cultural and scientific studies attuned me to chakra models that belied the singular Western one. Since Llewellyn published my first book featuring my twelve-chakra system, I have eagerly taught it to thousands of individuals, and its fame and applications have spread worldwide.

The twelve chakra and auric field system includes the basic in-body chakras, which, as I mentioned, are each featured in one of the chakra books prior to this one in the series. Based in the spine, those seven chakras march upward from the base (first chakra) to the top of the head (seventh chakra). With this last book in the series, away we go into the energy of you beyond your skin.

HOW THIS BOOK IS ORGANIZED

Structurally, there are two parts to this book. I am the author of part 1. In its three chapters I have jam-packed as much data about the five out-of-body chakras as I could.

Chapter 1 outlines chakra essentials, such as each of the five 12

chakras’ main purpose and location, color, and sound, and it includes a significant comparative analysis relating every chakra to those in other systems, ancient and modern.

Onward we’ll go into chapter 2 and an analysis of the physical nature of the five extraordinary chakras. As with the in-body chakras, each is affiliated with a hormone gland and various physical functions. I’ll cover this information as well as the types of disease processes that are linked to each chakra. In chapter 3 you’ll seek to understand the psychology of your five special chakras, including their impact on emotions, mental health, and intuition.

Part 2 consists of brief but inclusive chapters that are each written by an energetic expert who will help you mine the unique qualities of the out-of-body chakras. Each new friend will reveal exciting ways to explore your extraordinary chakras. You’ll call upon spirit allies to seek assistance, and you’ll apply yoga poses, meditation, vibrational remedies, stones, mantras, shapes, colors, and even recipes to stretch beyond the mere physical and further illuminate these exciting out-of-body chakras.

As you’ll soon discover, you—and this world—are much more vast than you might have guessed.

PART 1

ESTABLISHING THE FOUNDATION OF YOUR OUT-OF-BODY CHAKRA KNOWLEDGE

Place your hand on your chest. Inhale and exhale deeply.

On the next round of breaths, connect as fully as possible with your inhalation and exhalation.

Notice that your awareness is rooted in your lungs. Oxygen flows throughout your entire body, however, so set the intention to follow the stream of air as it travels through your physical form.

Upward you drift, becoming aware of your head, neck, shoulders, and hands. Downward you dip, experiencing your torso, hips, legs, and feet. It’s time to become aware of the you that is outside of yourself.

Take in a great gulp of air. Hold it for a moment or two, and on your exhalation, invite your consciousness to pop through the outer boundaries of your body and into the field that surrounds it.

Everything—and everyone—is composed of fields of light and sound. Give yourself permission to skim along the surface of your body as slowly or quickly as you choose.

How lovely to dance without occupying your shoes, to fly without flapping your arms! You are as light as sunlight, as sinuous as moonbeams, and as free as dreams. You can even touch the starlight cast from space.

Congratulations. You have established the fact that your external self is as available to you as your internal self is.

The beauty of your five extraordinary chakras is that they interweave your inside and outside selves with one another and with the greater universe.

Part 1 will enable a broad base of knowledge about these five out-of-body chakras. Chapter 1 presents the basics. It contains five sections, each featuring one of these delightful chakras. Within these sections I’ll present knowledge rich and juicy, including meet-and-greets with similar chakras that are found in other subtle systems. The goal of chapter 2 is to help you understand the physicality of each extraordinary energy body, and chapter 3 addresses the areas of psychological expertise of our five main characters.

If you are familiar with any of the previous books in this series, you’ll notice a distinct difference between the fundamental coverage in those books and this one. Your five extraordinary chakras are atypical; therefore, the data in this book is not as expansive. However, chapter 1 will include some of the same categories of information you encountered in the books about the seven in-body chakras, such as chakra location, color, attribute, and even sound.

Other topics covered in those books are either not known or not applicable when it comes to the out-of-body chakras.

Therefore, I will not cover chakra petals, elements, action organs, gods and goddesses, and some of the other topics you may be familiar with; such correlations simply do not exist. Chapters 2 and 3 will also present some subjects that overlap with previous books but not others. The good news is that in dropping certain categories, I can go into greater depth in the areas that are featured.

The categories of information aside, this grand adventure is one to be cherished. Please enjoy the ride.
