Happy New Year and Welcome everyone to the 1st XV’s first home game of 2025 in Division 3 East Central.
Canton RFC are today’s visitors to Cefn Mably and we extend a warm welcome to their players, officials and supporters and hope to enjoy a few beers in the clubhouse afterwards.
The game earlier in the season was a loose one, with Canton intent on giving the ball air and running it on almost every opportunity on their 4G pitch. It was an error strewn game though with a high penalty count, a try for each team, ours by Jack Davies 5 minutes into the game and theirs in the final minutes. Morgan Raison’s 3 penalty goals and a Lewys Montague Drop goal gave us a 14 – 17 win and we all breathed a sigh of relief to have won a scrappy game.
Despite having won only 2 of their league games this season, they cannot be underestimated at all having made life difficult for every team they’ve played. Their losses have been close and in their last game they claimed a very good 135 win over Fairwater who we know are a good side.
Today is our first home game since 16th November such is the structure of the community game in Wales. Christmas and bad weather have played their part but 8 weeks without a home game is far too long particularly mid-season but at last,
we are here today and can hopefully bounce back from our 15 – 14 defeat away to Llandaff last Saturday. The frost had thawed enough to get a game on but left a heavy, slippery surface that at times made getting any traction very difficult. This along with a long lay off for most of players proved to be our undoing although we scored 2 very good try’s, the first by Lewys Montague after 10 minutes which was well converted by Raison and our 2nd try 20 minutes into the 2nd half was well finished off by Adam Kinsey following a brilliant break by Dan Griffiths after some good phase play to give us a 12 – 14 lead. A penalty goal for Llandaff with around 10 minutes to play made it 15 – 14 and despite us hammering at their line, we were unable to cross. We came home with a losing Bonus point having also given 1st team debuts to Connor Mitchell and Callum David but it was a game that we could’ve won.
So today should be a good game with us looking to bounce back and Canton looking to pick up another good win so I hope our players have benefitted from playing last Saturday and we are not as rusty as last week. Good luck to both teams but of course, I hope we are victorious today.
Today’s game should be a great contest but we wouldn’t have it without the Man in the Middle.

We ask you all to help ensure he enjoys his day as much as possible by showing him the upmost respect that he deserves. We ask that Everyone involved today observes the WRU code of conduct regarding discipline and in particular respect towards referee’s as well as each other. Cheer and shouting encouragement is welcomed but please do so respectfully and do not abuse each other or the Referee.
Similarly we must insist that only the coaches and physio’s are touchline on half way with all others including substitutes, remaining behind the barriers or substitutes are warming up behind the goal line.
All supporters MUST remain behind the barriers and keep off the touchline!
Other info, 2nds & Youth news:
In the absence of a home game for so long, I must mention Phillip Davies who we learned sadly passed away at the end of November. “Match” was one of our clubs greatest players and a tribute to him was posted on our social media pages. Capped at Schoolboy level, he went on to Captain us in 1983-84 season, he won the silver ball with us among many other great achievements. Since
we’ve not had a home game to mark his passing, there will be a minutes silence before kick off today for Phillip Daves as a mark of respect.
As is tradition, The 2nds played Beddau on Boxing day for the Carl Newton Memorial cup and despite a determined effort were unable to overcome the strong home team. The game was 17-0 until the last 15 minutes with the 2nd half scoreless for 25 mins but the strength in Beddau’s squad being able to call on so many good replacements saw them retain the trophy. Families and friends, fierce rivals on the pitch meant the game was watched by a decent crowd of around 200 – 250 people which shows the appetite for these fixtures and the Beddau clubhouse was bustling afterwards. Our turn again this year and we look forward to them coming here on Boxing Day and continuing this tradition.
With 8 league games to play, promotion is achievable but should we remain in this division next season with the current local teams, it could prove a feast of local derbies and hopefully good crowds with Gilfach Goch and Cilfynydd currently in the relegation positions in the division above us and from the division below it looks as though Pontyclun and possibly Tylorstown will come up. Of course, we are only at the halfway point of the season so a lot can happen by then.
2nds & Youth:
It’s great that we are gradually getting our 2nds team back up and running fully with recent games including a good win in Llantwit Fardre, The 2nds put in a solid performance away v Beddau as mentioned above. We aim to keep them playing as much as possible and reestablish the 2nds properly in readiness for next season when some current youth players will move up to senior rugby. Thanks to Sean Stephens and everyone involved for their efforts.
We are thrilled to once again have a Youth team this season after a few years without one and boy, have they done well so far!
There been some very good results so far for these young men including an excellent win on Cardiff Arms Park before Christmas when they defeated Llantwit Fardre 33 - 6 to win the Cardiff Region Vase trophy. A great Win for them and great day for the club as we filled 3 buses to the capitol. The only disappointment was that there was no actual Vase, cup or trophy for them to keep and no food after the game for the players. The WRU and Cardiff rugby region really should do better with such basic things on a finals day but one things for sure, our players didn’t let it spoil their celebrations, Well done boys!!
Their Man of the Match was Alfie Beazer who took away his Tomahawk steak sponsored by The Gourmet Butcher.
The youth drew 19 all last Saturday away v Penarth and we wish them all the best today and for the rest of the season.
