Preparing a delicious Surf & Turf Dinner has never been easier by pairing a filet mignon and jumbo shrimp from NC Eat & Play’s recipe partner, The Butcher’s Market. This delicious combo makes a perfectly elegant dish for a special birthday, anniversary, romantic dinner, or just a Friday night at home. Whether you choose to pair it with your favorite compound butter, crab béarnaise sauce, or the tried-and-true rosemary and butter combination, this recipe will set you on your way to the perfect pan-seared filet dish. Here’s a tender, buttery, uncompromised take on The Butcher’s Market Surf & Turf, done easy.
Cooking Instructions: Yield: 2 Servings Prep: 15 Minutes
Ingredients:
Temperature Ranges:
Rare: 120°-125° Medium Rare: 130°-135° Medium: 140°-145° Medium Well: 150°
(2) 1½ - 2 inch thick filets Ground black pepper Sea salt 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) 1 tablespoon butter (compound if desired) 2-3 sprigs of rosemary Thermometer For the surf, you will add 4 jumbo shrimp
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 400 °F. Allow steaks to rest on your counter for 10-15 minutes prior to cooking. Season with black pepper and salt over all sides evenly. Try coating the filet with a touch of EVOO, to ensure the salt and pepper adheres. Heat a cast iron skillet over high heat, add butter, olive oil, and rosemary and sear for 1-2 minutes per side. Transfer skillet to the oven and cook for 6-8 minutes, depending on desired internal temperature. It is important to use a meat thermometer during this step (remove your steaks out of the oven 5 degrees prior to desired internal temperature as they will continue to cook as they are slowly cooling down). Now comes the shrimp. Return skillet to the stove top on medium-high heat and cook shrimp for 3-4 minutes, flipping occasionally. Plate your filet and shrimp as desired and make sure to add the drippings from the skillet for extra deliciousness.

EDITOR’S NOTE
EXTRA: What you can expect to see in the magazine and what you’re not going to see (probably ever). First of all, some might say what business do I have in publishing a monthly magazine? My response is “good question.” It’s not totally out of line to ask. The way I look at it is that I’m blessed to have a trusted and experienced team to guide me along the way. They’ve been with me pretty much from the start, and with their support I’ve reached so many goals I would have thought were unobtainable. Their trust and support allows me to be my most authentic self. I’m perhaps not as cultured or hip to all the latest happenings around town. I’m probably not going to be at many “it” events or partying at the newest openings. I’m not motivated by covering stories that are overly or widely shared.
Megan Nichols, Founder & Editor-At-Large It’s finally here! Our first issue of NC Eat & Play Magazine has arrived. If anyone would have told me that starting an Instagram page four years ago would lead to a full-time career and now a monthly publication, I’d say “get out of here!” As my team and I dive into publishing, I’m excited to put something fresh and different in your hands every month. We want to create something that will extend your connection with NC Eat & Play and help you fall more in love with North Carolina. We refer to the publication as a monthly carousel which is an intentional nod to the social media posts that started it all for me. As the world of social media gets more and more cluttered with everyone chasing followers through reels with text on screen and viral song choices, I love the fact that we’re taking a step back and sharing photos and stories once again. You’ll see great archives from photoshoots when I first started and soon, newer images for what’s upcoming. Throughout, you’ll see QR codes to pull up additional content related to the carousel images. Everything will be from my point-of-view as I share all the things I care about. In the first issue, I wanted to invite you into my most favorite place in all of North Carolina, my home. As a self-proclaimed “local wanderluster,” I’ve traveled all over the state to inspire adventures and great food finds, but the reality is that I’m most comfortable and happy at home with my family. I hope that doesn’t sound too boring. I believe that when you’re happiest at home, everything else is just icing on the cake.
I’m just not interested in being another publication that has to have the top stories everyone is talking about. What I can say confidently is that I don’t think I’m missing out. Over the years, I’ve heard from and met with so many of my followers who appreciate that I share approachable content that’s familiar to their lives. I genuinely try to help others through my platform without pretending to know it all or be something I’m not. I’m just a girl that was born and raised in North Carolina. Now a wife, mother, and content creator, I’m happy to create a relevant publication that’s easy and fun to read. With the help of partners and contributors, this publication is filled with things you’ll want to try for yourselves (whether that’s in our stories, guides, lists, or even advertising). The main distribution of the magazine will be in Raleigh and the cities and towns that make up the Triangle, but that’s not to say it’s only for readers in these areas. You can expect a homebase vibe but I hope to provide interesting stories from other parts of our state too. Along the way, I want to hear from you. Magnificent Mouthwatering Food by Southern Craft Sandwiches

A must try! Editor-At-Large, Megan Nichols, states, “These are by far my favorite sandwiches in North Carolina. From the quality meats to the crusty yet fluffy bread, every bite is a satisfying experience. The Steak & Cheese is my most ordered sandwich and I can’t get enough of the tender steak and melted cheese.”
Early Instagram followers of NC Eat & Play may recall Southern Craft Sandwiches being regularly featured on its page. Looking back, it’s appropriate to say the artisan sandwich shop’s popularity grew in sync with NC Eat & Play’s growth. Southern Craft Sandwiches’ owner, Mark Hansen Jr., knew when he opened his restaurant that connecting with locals through social media would be important. It was also affordable compared to other advertising at the time. He found a little page called NC Eat & Play and gave the page a chance. In return, NC Eat & Play gave Southern Craft Sandwiches the lift it needed as a new foodie consideration and established a true friendship that continues to this day. It’s with great honor and thanks that the first Foodie Spotlight for NC Eat & Play Magazine features Mark and his story of crafting success his way. A Raleigh native, Mark grew up in Durant Trails and Falls River and went to Millbrook High School.
He began thinking about the possibility of owning his own sandwich place as a teenager while working at a local Jersey Mike’s Subs. Mark shares, “I really enjoyed making sandwiches at a young age. I eventually came up with the idea to start a butcher/sandwich shop in 2015.” Mark took a leap of faith and quit his full time job making $80k a year to train and learn how to be a butcher. He then moved to New York City in 2015 with his wife and two young boys, Tyler, age 2, and Jaxon, only a month old. He exclaims, “My wife is a huge part of my success! Her support allowed our family to move to NYC to train as a butcher while she worked and took care of two babies.” Fast forward to 2017. Mark opened up a butcher shop in the popular Lafayette Village on Falls of Neuse Road. The butcher shop also offered 3 sandwich options to help move meats from the butcher shop side. Mark explains things were tough and then COVID hit, forcing them to make a huge transition. “We dropped everything butcher and made the decision to go full time sandwiches.” He continues, “Prior to COVID we did about 20 sandwiches a week. Once COVID hit, we ended up at around 300 a week and are now cruising along as a full scale reputable sandwich shop.” Mark notes that this is about the time he starting working with NC Eat & Play. He recalls, “I remember you (Megan) coming in and I had no clue what to expect. But man, was it an awesome start to a crazy journey. The coverage allowed me to become the sandwich shop I am today and I can’t be more grateful. It saved my business during COVID and helped propel it to what it is today.”
When it comes to his love for Raleigh, Mark says, “It’s special to me to be able to give back to a community I shared so many memories with as a child. I love Raleigh! It’s my home, and I have done so much here. My family is here along with a bunch of lifelong friends. Raleigh is such a beautiful place with so much to do.” “It’s crazy seeing all the faces from my younger school days, but it allows me to see so many childhood friends. It’s even more special watching friends with spouses and children and seeing them grow up over the years as they visit the shop.” When you meet Mark, you’ll first notice he’s a personable owner that’s hands on with every aspect of his business. He’s greeting everyone, taking orders, answering questions, preparing meals, and expertly training his staff by leading by example in all facets of hospitality and food service. But being a business owner isn’t easy. Mark attributes his family for keeping him motivated during hard times. “I have endured a lot with this business from missing birthdays and vacations, but nothing pushes me harder than my wife and two boys. I will show my boys there is always a brighter side to every storm. You have to go through the tough times to eventually make it to the good times.” Another very big motivator for Mark is his mom who passed away some time ago. He says she always encouraged him the most and when he wanted to go into business, she believed in him. “I have pushed through some very hard times knowing she is behind me guiding me to be the best I can be.” Every sandwich made from the shop is made by team members that care about their work. They take pride in making great sandwiches. It shows through reviews and awards they have received for the best sandwich in Raleigh. Mark concludes, “That is not me, that is my team.”

Foodies were hardpressed to find many local restaurants, and when one did open, it often closed a couple of years later.
With this growth, the food scene has steadily grown as well. Big North Carolina restaurant names like Brigs and Cape Fear Seafood Company have added Wake Forest to their portfolios.
Over the last several years, Wake Forest has benefited from the real estate boom. The town has become increasingly popular for homebuyers as Raleigh and surrounding areas stay at the top lists for Best Places to Live.
Locals and newcomers alike are more and more intentional about supporting their neighbors.
Whether it’s locals relocating to Wake Forest in search of more land to build their dream homes or newcomers to North Carolina finding its small town charm most appealing to raise their families, there’s no denying the town has experienced substantial growth - and it’s not slowing down.

She shares, “I have found some excellent gems in my hometown that I’m excited to share with you. As always, I only include restaurants that I have personally tried.”

What’s one of the best parts of being an adult? Getting to start with dessert if we want! Wake Forest excels in some of its dessert options, so starting the list with indulgent sweets is fitting.
Dairy Depot A favorite spot for a fun and refreshing treat, Dairy Depot specializes in soft-serve ice cream and has lots of creative options. Sweet Traditions If you’re craving a decadent cupcake in Wake Forest, Sweet Traditions is always the move. They have delicious cupcakes with rotating flavors (and Megan’s enjoyed them all). Lumpy’s Ice Cream A Wake Forest homemade ice cream icon using only fresh, local ingredients without additives or preservatives. Their flavors are very unique, ranging from Ecuadorian chocolate to strawberry-basil. It’s creamy, natural, and delicious.
Plant Cakes Bake Shop A 100% plant-based, organic bakery serving donuts, cupcakes, muffins, cookies, and more. Additionally, they have a glutenfree case as well. These goodies are so yummy that even locals with no dietary restrictions love coming here. Goodberry’s Frozen Custard Known for making the best frozen custard in the world, we’re lucky there are multiple Triangle area locations, including Wake Forest! Without one, Megan probably wouldn’t have built her house there. Kidding. Maybe. Heritage Donuts Heritage Donuts makes the best donuts in the Triangle, and you can quote us on that.

Wake Forest Restaurant Guide | Megan’s Hometown Faves Originally written for and continuously updated on nceatandplay.com FAST-CASUAL DINING Tikila Tacos & Mezcal A newer Mexican eatery in Wake Forest with festive vibes, great food, and a full bar with great drinks. It’s one of the few places around serving birria. Smith’s Smokehouse & Smoothies A Veteran-owned barbecue restaurant specializing in smoked meats and smoothies. Yes, smoothies. Don’t knock it ‘til you try it (especially the banana pudding smoothie). The Empanada Factory Specializing in Latin street food that will make your taste buds sing, this husbandand-wife team opened their place to share family recipes. They have tons of empanada varieties (including dessert ones), tacos, bowls, nachos, and more. Charlie’s Kabob Grill A favorite Mediterranean restaurant in the area. Charlie is from Lebanon and travels back to his home country frequently, each time returning with more spices and recipes to use in his shop. The Burger Shop Serving freshly-made classic burgers and hand-cut fries, it’s a fun lunch spot. Plus, it’s a favorite of Mr. NC Eat & Play, Harrison (Megan’s husband who oversees sales support for the brand). Village Deli A well-loved restaurant making food from scratch, including sandwiches, burgers, wraps, and more. It’s a welcoming, casual environment- perfect for lunch with friends and colleagues or a family outing.

SIT-DOWN DINING Shorty’s Famous Hot Dogs A Wake Forest institution and has been since 1916! As the oldest restaurant in the area, Shorty’s is still owned by the same family. They specialize in red hot dogs, which is a fun, tasty glimpse into the past
Amalia’s Authentic Italian Restaurant Located in an enchanting historic home, the chef graduated top of his class from a world-renowned culinary school in Italy and brought his talents here. The restaurant and food will blow you away.
The Lemon Tree A quaint café in Downtown Wake Forest that has a rotating menu of sandwiches, soups, quiche, prepared salads, desserts, and more.
Gonza Tacos Y Tequila Known for being one of North Carolina’s favorite Mexican restaurants. While their tacos are great, locals are also hooked on their Mexican Flag Enchiladas, Chicken Tinga Nachos, and other authentic dishes.
Mario’s Pizzeria A favorite NY-style pizza place in town. The owner made the pizzas at a different pizza restaurant before opening his own restaurant. It’s great pizza, and the penne alla vodka is something special too.
Curry House A popular Indian restaurant in town serving royal cuisines reminiscent of the Mughal Empire of India and of cultural Nepal and Tibet.
Sugar Magnolia Café A charming eatery that not only serves tasty sandwiches and salads but is one of the few places in the Triangle area with tea service.
Over The Falls One of those restaurants with a little bit of everything on the menu, making it an excellent choice for groups with differing tastes.
Tacos El Gordo We had to mention this taco truck parked at 927 Cloverleaf Park. The tortillas are fresh, handmade pieces of heaven, and the meats are bursting with flavor.
Highly frequented by Megan for the sandwiches, she recommends the Cali Pastrami, which has pastrami, avocado, habanero jack cheese, fried onion, and chipotle mayo on a pretzel roll. The NC Eat & Play team agrees, it’s outstanding. Bodega Tapas, Wine, And Rum Excelling in ambiance and taste with small plates with worldwide influences, along with plenty of drink pairings. This restaurant is a great experience all around.
Farm Table A lovely restaurant focusing on in-season produce with a changing menu. The interior is beautiful and modern-rustic, and the food is comforting, well-crafted, and delicious. Norse Brewing Company A lovely restaurant and brewery that serves Scandinavian food with a Southern twist. They embrace Viking culture in their decorations, food, and vibe. Shuckers Oyster Bar And Grill A local favorite for a few reasons: the food is delicious, the hushpuppies are bottomless, and it was the location for Megan’s wedding rehearsal dinner.
Sushi Siam Known for its BOGO all day, every day, even for carryout. With its reasonable price, you can enjoy their rolls and some Thai dishes as often as you’d like.
Korean Kitchen A delicious restaurant specializing in Korean food, and you’ll keep returning for their crispy, sticky, flavorful Korean fried chicken wings.
Brigs An iconic breakfast restaurant with a few locations throughout the Triangle, including Wake Forest, where it is wellloved for its seasonal waffles and pancakes.
Thai Cafe A beloved restaurant in Wake Forest for years now, and it’s not hard to understand why when you try their food. Megan gets the green curry and exclaims, “It’s outstanding!”
Tlaquepaque Mexican Cuisine Another popular traditional Mexican restaurant in Wake Forest. Enjoy tacos and guacamole and Megan’s favorite dish, Enchiladas Tlaquepaque: corn tortillas stuffed with queso fresco, topped with shredded pork carnitas, and covered with tomatillo sauce.
Cape Fear Seafood Company A statewide favorite for savory seafood dishes and creating coastal vibes inland, having this restaurant open in Wake Forest confirms the area’s growth in popularity.

Who doesn't want to go to a fun hootenanny with Cheerwine? Every year, NC Eat & Play partners with Cheerwine for its Spring and Fall Hootenanny & Foodie Fest at a local farm. The family-friendly ticketed event brings out over a thousand locals indulging on southern, farm-style fun and local food from some of the area’s most popular restaurants and food vendors. The Spring Hootenanny & Foodie Fest presented by Cheerwine will be on Saturday, April 13, 2024, from 3pm to 7pm at Haven of Knightdale. It all starts with Haven of Knightdale’s gorgeous shoppe and farm. Filled with local goodies and a coffee and wine bar, attendees will enjoy some sipping, shopping, and munching before heading to the main event barn area in the back of the farm.

Here’s an EXTRA BITE of knowledge from the butchers at The Butcher’s Market. Over the last couple of decades, no steak has come close to the demand for filet at The Butcher’s Market every year. With its mild flavor and tender texture, there’s a reason the filet has stayed near the top of menus for home chefs and cooking pros alike. The filet mignon’s tenderness and flavor is a direct result of its location on the animal and the fact it remains a relatively unused muscle. Running through small sections of the short loin and sirloin section of the cow, tenderloin only represents about 3% of the animal. The high concentration of intramuscular fat lends itself to delivering a densely marbled cut that is so tender you can slice it with a butter knife.
This fact weighs heavily in its historical demand and oftentimes rarity in butcher shops around the world. It can be pared down into individual steaks (filets), left whole for chateaubriand roasts, and, even when left on the short loin section, can be found on bone-in porterhouse steaks.
CAUTIONARY COOKING TIP: You never want to overcook a filet. It is best served medium to medium rare, otherwise you run the risk of drying out and compromising the flavor. NC Eat & Play followers know Megan’s mom, Kristin (often mistaken as Megan’s sister) for their cooking channel, My Mama’s NC Kitchen - where they share their favorite dishes and take on popular recipes hacks. These two are kicking off a new cooking season with strawberries on their minds. Here are two of Kristin’s easy recipes that will brighten any spring occasion.
Mama’s Favorite Strawberry Streusel Muffins with White Chocolate Chips Ingredients Streusel Topping • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1⁄3 cup white sugar • 1⁄2 cup white sugar • 1⁄4 cup all-purpose flour • 1⁄4 cup packed brown sugar • 1⁄4 tsp. ground cinnamon • 2 1⁄2 tsp. baking powder • 3 tbsp. cold butter • 1⁄2 tsp. salt • 3⁄4 cup milk • 1 large egg, lightly beaten • 1⁄4 cup butter, melted • 1⁄2 tsp. grated lemon zest • 1 1⁄2 cup white chocolate chip morsels • 1 1⁄2 cups fresh strawberries, cut into small bite size pieces
Cooking Instructions Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Line muffin tray with paper baking cups. Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Stir in the milk, egg, melted butter, and the lemon zest. (Note: the batter will be thick). Add in the white chocolate chips and the blueberries and stir carefully. Spoon mixture into the muffin cups (filling almost full). For the streusel topping, combine the sugar, flour, and cinnamon in a small bowl. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender, fork, or 2 knives until coarse crumbs form. Kristin shares that she usually just uses her fingers and works it until the crumbs form. Sprinkle over the muffins and gently press the crumb into the batter.

Baking Guidelines Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 min. Always start on the low end since all ovens are different. Try not to overcook them. Muffins are done when they lightly bounce back when touched or when a wooden toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Let cool in pan for a few minutes. Loosen the edges with a knife before removing the muffins. Let muffins finish cooling on a wire rack. Kristin likes these eaten on the same day, but assures that they are still delicious for a few days after baking.
Kristin’s Bright & Yummy Strawberry Poppyseed Salad Ingredients for salad • 4 cups spring mix • 4 cups romaine or iceberg lettuce • 1 to 1 1⁄2 cup sliced strawberries • 1⁄2 cup crumbled feta, goat, or blue cheese • 3⁄4 cup cinnamon pecans or other nut of your choice • 1⁄3 cup dried cranberries (optional, but good)
Instructions Mix lettuces in a bowl. Top with all the other ingredients. Toss with the poppy seed dressing and toss until coated. Kristin points out that this recipe makes a lot of dressing, and you can keep the extra dressing in the fridge for up to a week.

Owner of Haven of Knightdale When you think of the word haven, you think of a safe and peaceful place where you’re protected from danger and trouble. That’s exactly what Leslie Logan Brown was searching for in her next movement in life. After spending the majority of her life serving as a key leader in her family’s retail business, she wanted a place that put into practice what’s been brewing in her heart for a long time.

Born and bred in a family business, Leslie’s family owns a garden center in Raleigh. She jokes, “That business was like the third child in the family.” “I have worked there all of my life and cut my teeth on just about every role in a small business. Hard work and an appreciation for people are values I am truly grateful to have learned from that experience.” Leslie candidly adds, “I have also worked in a group home for troubled teens which meant a lot to me because I had a rough go at my teenage years, and it was a way to give back that was really meaningful for me.” She also spent years as a worship leader in local churches.

NC Eat & Play arrived on a Wednesday morning as the Haven team was preparing for a children’s storytime hosted at the shoppe. Parents and kids were taking their seats while the onsite baristas cranked up the coffee and tea service. Leslie beamingly shared that this is their second storytime held and it’s been a wonderful way to offer up space for young kids and their parents to enjoy Haven in a more intimate way. Located in Knightdale, Haven is comprised of a locally-curated shoppe, animal petting area, playground, greenhouse, wedding venue, and guest properties for lodging. Gatherings at Haven have grown substantially since their grand opening in early 2023 and is a strong contributor to its success. NC Eat & Play followers may remember that in the summer of 2023, we moved our events to Haven and hosted a Country Water Festival and Fall Hootenanny & Foodie Festival. Both events were successful and birthed a partnership with Haven for more events and gatherings for years to come.
In her words What is it like to be a woman in business here? This makes me giggle. Because the difference between now and 20 years ago, is remarkable. I remember when I was running my family’s business and got asked on a regular basis if I could introduce someone to the manager - because, of course, I couldn’t be the manager as a young woman in the south. But, as things have evolved in our cities, so have perspectives. Today, I feel incredibly blessed to be surrounded by so many woman-owned, highly respected businesses in our area. Tips From A Mom (Real Talk): Capture Everything! I often hear from parents that they struggle with their kids in front of the camera. Believe me, you’re not alone. With years of experience on my side, I’ve been able to create environments and plans of action that capture magical moments. I can tell almost immediately when a child is comfortable or not and if they are familiar with having their picture taken. In my opinion, kids that are used to having tons of photos taken at home tend to do well in front of a professional photographer. It’s the old saying, “practice makes perfect.”
My Five Here are 5 essential tips to getting the most out of taking photos with young children and getting them comfortable in front of the camera. 1.
Keep it simple. No need to overthink it. Just get out your camera and start shooting. No time is the wrong time to capture your family. After all, kids change so very fast that daily photographs will only become more valuable over time.
2.
Let your kids be kids. Forcing and threatening kids to do what you want them to for a photo rarely works in your favor. Instead, try to capture their true selves and play with them to get them to show their happiness for photos. If they need a break, give it to them. If a treat is needed, have their favorite snack for motivation. There’s no judgement!
3.
Bring music. This always loosens people up and makes kids feel more comfortable. It will also set the mood if you want happy pictures!
4.
Do a 350 project challenge. If you don’t know where to start, I challenge you to take one picture a day for 350 days. It can be of your child brushing their teeth, riding their bike, or building with Legos. No matter what it is, take one a day. I guarantee at the end of the year, that set of small moments will be one of your greatest treasures as a parent.
5.
Remember lighting. When taking photos indoors, use lots of window light.
If your kids feel as excited as you do in taking photos, this will set them up to be comfortable for those bigger photo moments down the road. EXTRA TIP: If you’re a mom or dad that’s on their phone a lot in front of your kids, try capturing photos with a camera instead of your phone. Kids may be distracted by your cell phone because it’s more of a toy or source of entertainment to them. Helping them differentiate the use of a camera helps them realize its a new activity.

Tips For Hiring A Photographer

Look at their work to see their shooting style. Are they more candid, or are they more posed? Both styles are beautiful, and both take a different skill set. Think about what you want your final gallery to look like and the types of images you hope your photographer will capture.

How do they edit? Some photographers like light and airy edits. Some like edits that are more true to life or bold and colorful. Some are dark and moody. What are you most drawn to? Do not hire a photographer that shows moody work and expect them to deliver a light and airy gallery. Photographers work to perfect their edits in a specific way and it is a big piece of their artistic voice, so make sure you’ve seen their portfolio before you hire someone!
•
What is your budget? There is a photographer for every budget. If you care about cost, make sure you chat with your photographer from the start about what your budget is and if they fit the bill. Many times, photographers will have payment plans so do not be afraid to ask.
•
What is offered in their services? Some photographers will meet you at your location, photograph you, and give you all the digital images. Some will provide assistance in styling your outfits, choosing your location, and crafting your session to personalize it with you. Make sure you understand what you are getting.
•
Vet how long they’ve been shooting. The best way to do this is to research them using their websites and their social media pages. You can tell if they are consistent with their work and if they are comfortable shooting families. The images will usually speak for themselves.

NC Museum of Art: This is a great option with rolling hills and lots of golden grass. It also has beautiful light and some landmark sculptures.

Fort Fisher: Located at Kure Beach, this area is a coastal spot that boasts the beautiful Atlantic Ocean, pink sunsets, massive rocks, and interesting trees. It is a quick two and half hour drive from Raleigh.

Horseshoe Preserve Farm: A gorgeous open field with tall grass and wide open skies.

Lake Crabtree Park: This park’s highlight is the lake! It has a big field for running and the sun sets over a lake, which adds a fun element to photos.

Yates Mill County Park: Not only is there a body of water with great wooden bridges, but also a historic mill with rocks, which is an awesome place for unique pictures.
Black Balsam Knob: Located in Asheville NC, you will get 360 views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Take the Art Loeb Trail to the top. I would recommend visiting in the summer months as temperatures and winds can be wild during the cooler seasons. The hike up is moderate but so worth the breathtaking views at the top! As always, keep your eyes on the little ones when you are on rocky mountain tops.

Freedom Park: Located in Charlotte, NC, Freedom Park is a 98-acre park centered around a 7-acre lake about 3 miles from the heart of Charlotte’s downtown area between Charlotte’s historic Dilworth and Myers Park neighborhoods.

Dorothea Dix Park: This park has an awesome cityscape of downtown Raleigh and seasonal daffodils and sunflowers! Keep your eyes out for when these are in bloom and check it out with your family and a camera.

Joyner Park: This Wake Forest park has big pecan trees, awesome colors in the fall, and rustic buildings on the property. You can get lots of variety at this location.

Happiest at Home When anyone asks me where’s my favorite place to travel in North Carolina, I’m quick to share with them my love for Beaufort or the mountains. What I’m not so sure of is how well I’ve shared how much being home means to me. As traveling has become more and more of my job thanks to NC Eat & Play, I’ve also grown a deeper appreciation for being at home and creating memories here as well.
Yes, this wanderluster-for-life has found peace in pausing and establishing roots for myself and my family. Maybe it’s adulting or maybe it’s finding happiness in the comfort and safety of the familiar and regular, but whatever the reason for this season of life, I’m happy to embrace it. Here’s my journey back to why I returned to Wake Forest, where I grew up, how we managed to build a home there, and how it’s the perfect setting for raising my boys.

To start, let me say I’m extremely grateful that my husband, Harrison, and I were able to build our first home. To say we were a perfect candidate for a home would be somewhat of a stretch, but moving back to Wake Forest to be closer to family was important. We were outgrowing our leased townhome in Morrisville and preparing to welcome our second son, Cameron, to the family. Both Harrison’s and my parents live in Wake Forrest along with other family. To have our sons be closer to grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins was a big goal for us. Thinking back, I was just starting to gain momentum with NC Eat & Play and partnering with my brand management team. Harrison was working a local retail warehouse job, and I was tutoring online part time for extra income. To provide fun and indulgences for my family, I became really good at winning social media giveaways and was also able to treat my family out with traded work with my page. We were scrappy and experts at saving, but we needed to make some major moves in our lives in order to provide all that’s needed for our young growing family. Then the pandemic hit, and everything was up in the air.
I was pregnant with a toddler in tow bravely going out on photoshoots and trying my best to help local businesses stay afloat. The truth was I was scared and anxious not knowing if anything would ever pay off and quietly suffering with a desire for more stability. I realize I’m not alone. Wives and mothers especially have an undercurrent of emotions that cling for stability. When Harrison and I came to the conclusion that we couldn’t do it alone, family stepped up. Harrison took on a role at his father’s construction company, which allowed us to meet requirements for a home building loan. Newly trained, Harrison was able to project manage the build for us. So back to Wake Forest we went. We stayed at my mom’s house for a short period while the house was being finished. Having extra help is a real blessing for any new mom!

I didn’t know it at the time, but homeownership really did affect me in ways I didn’t expect. It’s easy to think of it as a series of transactions, meetings, phone calls, and inspections, but at the end of it all, you realize how much you care about it - this thing that was only dirt and gravel, and with wood and nails put together with local craftsmen and women, is now your family’s shelter. Harrison built us a modest, but mighty 4 bedroom cottagestyle home with just-enough affordable premium selections to make any first-time homeowner proud. It can be hard to stay in budget. Watching design shows and scrolling through Pinterest and social media will make your head hurt from all the pretty things out there. Harrison and I made a great team that balanced out what’s now versus later. That’s a big lesson I would happily share with anyone building or buying their first home. Every day, when I see my boys playing in here, I’m reminded that their dad helped build this for them. If I’m honest, I think being back in Wake Forest also has contributed to being more comfortable at home. I used to want to never stay home. I had to go out as if I was missing out or wasting my life away. Now I realize, I never really felt at “home.” That word means something more now. Before, things always felt temporary like a long trip that I kept extending. Not really mine. Just a place for lodging. Being back on hometown turf where Harrison and I grew up feels like we’re no longer away. We’re right where we belong. Here, my mom and dad are right down the street. Now, I’ll go over to my mom’s house to hang out and that’s more than enough. Afterwards, I’m ready to get home, make (or order in) dinner, and relax. I love listening to Harrison and the kids play video games while I read a book or gathering everyone for a family reading session in our bed. With a space to call my own, I’m more mindful than ever. Mindful of my present surroundings filled with the ones I love most. Mindful of what it took to get here. Mindful of what happiest is really all about for me.

Megan loves to lose herself in a book or two (or even three) whenever she has a chance. Reading has been a prominent source of entertainment and escapism for her since childhood. Over the last couple of years, NC Eat & Play followers have connected with her reading ventures and started asking for recommendations.

Here is her first book list featuring 20 must-reads and her thoughts on each. The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. This is possibly the most beautiful book I’ve ever read. It’s a historical fiction about the bravery of two sisters living in France during the Nazi invasion. It’s emotional, gripping, and inspiring. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. This fantasy series is one I consider perfect. It’s filled with jaw-dropping twists, actionpacked war, and swoon-worthy romance. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. I love this romance-fantasy series that is more immersive than any other story I’ve read before. The characters are lovable with astounding development and the world is so magical. This series brings me so much joy. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. This is the fictional, but realistic story of two women’s endurance in Afghanistan under Taliban’s rule. As they find their bravery in a world that attempts to diminish it, you can’t help but feel empowered yourself. 11/22/63 by Stephen King. As one of my top three favorite authors, Stephen King’s novel about a man who travels back in time to 1963 to stop the assassination of Kennedy is one of his best. This one is thrilling and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I knew from the first page of this book that it would be a favorite of mine forever. A man wakes up alone in space, on a last-chance mission to save earth from extinction but he can’t remember how he got there. The main character is funny, his adventure is incredible, and it reads like a movie. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This fictional story is simply exquisite and involves an aging Hollywood icon who is ready to divulge the secrets of her glamorous life to an amateur reporter. It’s a raw, beautiful story of the complexity of love, loss, and fame. The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. A former prisoner of war in the 1970’s moves his family to the Alaskan bush to live off grid. A stunning fiction that follows their family as they try to thrive in the unforgiving wilderness while managing PTSD. The descriptive scenery makes you feel like you’ve been to Alaska, and the story is gripping. Beach Read by Emily Henry. I simply adore this book about two nemesis authors living in neighboring beach houses and their journey to opening up to one another. The banter is cute and hysterical and the story deals with deeper themes like grief, regret, and heartbreak, while still managing to give you butterflies.
Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult. This one’s a brilliant novel involving a professional beekeeper and her son, who is accused of murdering his high school girlfriend. You learn so much about bees while attempting to unravel the mystery with jaw-dropping twists. Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. A truly unique read, Dark Matter is a sci-fi thriller about a physicist who one day wakes up in an alternate reality after being abducted. It’s a mind-bending experience that will keep you guessing the entire time. Untamed by Glennon Doyle. This memoir changed my life. It inspires women to trust themselves and break free from unfair expectations and false narratives about our abilities. It’s full of quotes you’ll remember forever. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. This thriller follows Theo, a psychotherapist committed to helping a woman who, after murdering her husband, has never spoken another word. The search for truth leaves you unsettled in the best way. Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. A retelling of David Copperfield, this story follows a boy born into poverty in the Appalachian mountains. It deals with heavy topics while offering amusing comedic relief from the main character’s unmatched wit and sarcasm.
The True Love Experiment by Christina Lauren. This romance is an entirely unique story involving a reality dating show. I can’t explain too much without spoiling it, but just know it had me giggling and crying constantly.

It follows four college best friends over the decades as they deal with grief, love, chronic pain, addiction, and success. It will break your heart and stitch it back together over and over again.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. This book is a true escape from reality. It’s one of the most whimsical, descriptive stories I’ve ever read.
