A s we close out the year, I want to share an update on the many exciting improvements underway across our parks system. Our department continues to work closely with FEMA as we rebuild several facilities impacted by recent storm damage, and we appreciate the community’s patience as these projects move forward. We also understand that planning and designing our flooded facilities has taken time, but we are committed to rebuilding the right way—carefully, safely, and in full compliance with FEMA standards—so that these parks serve our community well into the future.

One of our major efforts is the relocation of the dog park. The new site—adjacent to the Recreation Center where the sand volleyball courts are currently located—will include dedicated parking, lighting, and shaded bench areas to create a more comfortable and accessible space for our residents and their pets. Construction is expected to be completed by this summer.

Our athletic fields are also in the process of being rebuilt, with all ballfields scheduled to be completed by March. At East Street Park, a brand-new basketball court is planned to be ready for use this spring, adding another valuable recreation option for the community. In addition, we are moving forward on a new picnic pavilion at the Bi-Lo park area next to Recreation Park, bringing improved gathering and outdoor recreation opportunities to that side of town.

Beyond our rebuild projects, we are excited to share that Waynesville is undertaking a new Parks and Recreation Master Plan. This plan will guide our vision for the next ten years, and community input will play a crucial role. Please keep an eye out for upcoming public engagement opportunities—we want to hear your ideas. We are grateful to Visit Haywood for providing partial funding to help make this planning effort possible.

We also want to extend a special thank-you to the local nonprofits who partner with us throughout the year. Many of our projects and improvements simply would not be possible without their support, generosity, and shared commitment to making Waynesville’s parks and facilities the best they can be.

As always, thank you for your continued support of our parks, facilities, programs, and staff. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. Be sure to check our Recreation Center and Armory holiday hours and closures, and join us for some of the fun program events we have planned throughout December.
