A Letter From Your Director

As we move into May, it’s exciting to see so many of our recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene nearing completion. Your patience and support over the past months have meant a great deal, and we are proud to share that many of these projects are wrapping up and bringing new life back to our park system.

Our athletic facilities are once again buzzing with activity.

Dutch Fisher Field has reopened, our new T-ball field is already being enjoyed by our youngest athletes, and we anticipate announcing a reopening date for Vance Field later this month. In addition, we look forward to sharing details soon on the grand reopening of our dog park, which is scheduled for May.

We are also continuing progress on our Parks and Recreation Master Plan. A second community open house will be announced soon, and we strongly encourage everyone to attend and help shape the future of our park system. Your input is vital as we plan for the next generation of recreational opportunities in Waynesville.

One of the most important conversations currently underway is the future of the wooden playground structure at Rec Park. While the “castle” holds a special place in the hearts of many families and generations, we must also look ahead. Across the country, playground design has evolved to emphasize inclusive, accessible, and multi-sensory play environments that serve children of all abilities.

Modern playgrounds are designed not only for fun, but to support physical, social, and cognitive development for every child. Our existing structure has presented ongoing maintenance, safety, and supervision challenges, and we are actively exploring grant opportunities, partnerships, and community input to guide us toward a replacement that honors the past while better serving the future.

We are also excited to continue growing our partnership with the Trout Unlimited chapter through expanded fly fishing programs and classes. These offerings provide a unique opportunity to connect with our local waterways while learning about conservation and the importance of trout habitats in Richland Creek and throughout our region. As always, thank you for being part of our community and for your continued support of our parks and programs. We look forward to seeing you out enjoying everything this season has to offer.
