A Letter From Your Director

As we head into the start of summer, it’s an exciting and meaningful time for our Parks & Recreation Department. June is shaping up to be a month full of progress, new amenities, and opportunities for our community to connect and enjoy the outdoors.

We are thrilled to announce that our new dog park is scheduled to open later this month. We will be hosting a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony, and we look forward to celebrating this long-awaited addition with all of you. Stay tuned for event details.

Significant improvements are also nearing completion at our ballfields, where we are wrapping up final touches including new fencing, upgraded lighting, and modern scoreboards. These enhancements will greatly improve the experience for our athletes, families, and spectators.

Our sand volleyball courts have been successfully relocated to Recreation Park, now positioned near the greenway trail, Richland Creek, and the new pavilion. This upgraded location offers a great atmosphere, and we anticipate the courts will be open for public use at the beginning of June.

I want to extend a sincere thank you to our community for your patience and support as we continue working through our flood recovery projects following Helene. It has been a challenging road, but your understanding and encouragement have made a difference as we rebuild stronger.

L ooking ahead, we are currently in the planning phase to replace the wooden playground structure, a project that will depend heavily on grants and community donations. If you are interested in contributing or learning more about how to support this effort, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

We are also continuing progress on our Comprehensive Parks & Recreation Plan, which we hope to formally adopt in August. This plan will guide our vision for the next 10 years, and community input remains a critical part of that process. If you have not attended an open house, I encourage you to email me your ideas, feedback, and suggestions.

Inside the Waynesville Recreation Center, we are excited to add five new treadmills for our members. These upgrades reflect our ongoing commitment to improving fitness opportunities and enhancing the overall experience for our community.

Be sure to mark your calendars for RecJam 2026, happening on September 26. This year’s event will feature a 5K race and a disc golf tournament, along with other activities. Registration is open now, and we encourage everyone to get involved early.

A s always, our mission is to provide quality parks, programs, and experiences that bring people together and improve quality of life. Thank you for being part of our community and for your continued support.

We look forward to seeing you out in the parks this summer.

Sincerely,

- Luke Kinsland
