POULTON RESEARCH PROJECT We have longstanding links with the Poulton Research Project, a community archaeology project in Cheshire. Finds from this site span an incredible 9,000 years and include carefully worked pre-historic flints and 17th century artefacts from the English Civil War. Over 1,000 human skeletons from the site are stored in LJMU’s world-class osteology laboratories, and the medieval chapel’s burial ground also acts as a training excavation site for our forensic anthropology students.
CHESTER ZOO We have excellent links with the award-winning Chester Zoo. It is one of the world’s top zoos, with 37,000 animals from more than 500 species and active conservation projects both within the UK and abroad. Many students have completed research projects and placements with the zoo. Students on our Animal Behaviour, Wildlife Conservation and Zoology programmes also complete field trips to the zoo.
*FIELD TRIP COSTS Practical and field activities underpin all programmes in the School. PPE is provided for all necessary practical work. There are no costs for day field trips for core and optional modules. Residential field trips associated with core modules are subsidised and include travel and full-board or B&B accommodation costs (BSc (Hons) Biology, BSc (Hons) Animal Behaviour, BSc (Hons) Climate and Environment Sciences, BSc (Hons) Environmental Science, BSc Hons) Geography, BSc (Hons) Wildlife Conservation and BSc (Hons) Zoology). Any residential field trips for optional modules will incur a cost to the student. Locations may be subject to change and also subject to national and international travel restrictions.

FOUNDATION YEAR DEGREES If you don’t have the qualifications to enter directly onto the programme of your choosing, then one of our foundation year degrees might be the ideal option for you. The Biological and Environmental Sciences Foundation Years are not assessed via end of year examinations and tests but by more creative assessments spread across the year.
Once you pass the foundation year you progress directly onto the first year of the honours degree. This means that you will be studying for a minimum of four years, which may increase to five if your course of choice has a sandwich year as part of the degree. All of the degrees within the School of Biological and Environmental Sciences are available as a foundation year.
