EDUCATION Do you believe in the transformative power of education? We do. Pursuing a career in education requires passion, commitment and enthusiasm, as it is both equally challenging and rewarding. Our courses allow you to explore different perceptions of children and childhood; study the key sociological, historical, political, psychological and philosophical theories and contexts of education; learn to support individuals with a disability or special need; increase your understanding of the emotional and mental development of children and young people; promote physical activity in a range of settings or qualify to teach a diverse range of subjects to children aged 5-11. Depending on the course, you will have the option to gain hands-on teaching experience in schools; observe how children learn; undertake work-related learning or volunteering within the local community or experience an international work placement.

There is also scope to tailor your studies to your own interests through optional modules, research and work-related practice. All courses will provide you with a solid foundation for a child-centred career, allowing access to a wide range of roles in educational fields such as teaching, community learning, mentoring, social services, health, international education, armed and uniformed services, policy work, research, health and childcare. We believe in the impact that education can have on an individual, a community and society as a whole. Education is at the heart of our story and it can be for you too.

The School of Education at LJMU is made up of a team of talented academic and professional support staff, dedicated to ensuring our students receive a first-class learning experience. We are an ambitious, vibrant community, committed to social justice and working in partnership with our students, researchers and stakeholders to harness the transformational power of education in local, national and international contexts. Dr Ceri Daniels Director of the School of Education

The Education Building was officially opened with teachers and children from St Nicholas Catholic Academy and Pleasant Street Primary School - representing the eight primary schools who helped create thoughtprovoking artworks

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far on the primary education undergraduate course. There have been plenty of opportunities to work with children of all ages and take part in fun, practical learning activities such as outdoor learning in forest school. The course has provided me with valuable skills and insights across a range of core and foundation subjects, which will support me going forward as a future primary school teacher. Shehzad Siddiq, BA (Hons) Primary Education (with QTS) student

DO YOU ASPIRE TO BECOME A PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER? Then LJMU is the choice for you... In the most recent Ofsted visit, the inspectors praised our ‘strong partnerships with schools’, along with an ‘ambitious curriculum’ and ‘commitment to social justice’.

IN OUR 2023 INSPECTION, OFSTED INSPECTORS AWARDED LJMU A GOOD RATING IN BOTH OUR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY TEACHER TRAINING PROVISION

We want our students to get the most from their time as a student teacher with us and while they’re on placement with our partners. Our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes have been designed closely with schools, to ensure that you’ll gain the knowledge and skills needed to excel first as a student teacher, then as Early Career Teachers (ECTs) after graduation. Teaching can be a demanding, but incredibly rewarding vocation. At LJMU, we believe it’s important for you to experience different educational settings in schools across socio-economic areas and the Ofsted grade spectrum. These experiences will help you to become a more rounded, confident and employable teacher. The most recent Ofsted report noted that “the primary-phase ITE programmes are taught by expert tutors and trainers. Leaders make sure that their staff actively participate in the work of national subject and phase

specific organisations. Tutors and trainers expose student teachers to pertinent education research to help them in their careers, for instance about different subjects, and pedagogy and education issues. The student teachers clearly value this input. The report continued, “overall, the ‘partnership’ of tutors, academic leaders, mentors and school-based leaders have a clear, shared vision of developing teachers, who are very well-prepared for the realities of classroom teaching, including in areas where there are multiple challenges and barriers for children and communities.”

This positive outcome is testament to the ongoing day-today work, quality and commitment of our Initial Teacher Education team, work-based learning and admin teams, liaison tutors and wider staff - along with mentors and leaders in hundreds of partner schools currently supporting our students in their professional practice placements. Dr Ceri Daniels, Director of the School of Education

I loved my time learning to teach while at university. I made some really nice bonds with the children I taught while on placement. Jolie, Trainee Primary School teacher

TEACHER TRAINING - the different routes Some applicants know that the only profession for them is being a Primary school teacher, and choose to apply to our BA (Hons) Primary Education undergraduate degree, which leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). But what are the options if you want to explore other areas of education or childhood development, or become a Secondary school teacher? Maybe you’re not sure yet which area of teaching or education is right for you. Studying for an undergraduate degree first - either from our suite of undergraduate Education courses in a variety of subjects

- followed by a one year Initial Teacher Training course with Qualified Teacher Status in Primary or Secondary teaching with us is a fantastic way to establish a solid knowledge of key areas or subjects. It also offers the chance to pursue specialist interests, such as inclusion or early years. This is a great route into both teaching and many other careers. Another benefit of this route is gaining master’s level credits as part of your ITT course, making it easier to complete a master’slevel course in your Early Career Teacher year.

TAKE A GUIDED TOUR OF OUR BUILDING WITH OUR STUDENTS

WELCOME TO THE EDUCATION BUILDING The home for the School of Education for all students including undergraduate, postgraduate, professional development, teacher training and researchers. Our dedicated building provides the very latest teaching and learning facilities, along with individual and group study spaces for all our students. Facilities include the latest in pedagogical teaching and learning suites, IT facilities, a sensory room, student zone and easy access to Mount Pleasant Library.

OUTDOOR LEARNING Children learn from every environment they’re exposed to, and here at LJMU, we’re proud to have developed the Natural Curriculum to help provide enriched learning experiences for both children and our Education students. It’s something special that we think helps make our programmes stand out from the crowd. Our flagship outdoor learning, professional development and research concept Natural Curriculum is built fundamentally around a unique partnership to promote a key pillar of this work; ‘Thrive in the Forest’, with Mersey Forest and Natural England. Along with professional development programmes for practitioners, undergraduate students on our

Education degrees are able to gain certificates as Thrive in the Forest Practitioners. We offer much of our Natural Curriculum activities in a bespoke Outdoor Learning Area, an attractive outdoor space in the grounds of the John Lennon Art and Design Building - a few minutes away from the Education Building.

Here’s what some of our School of Education students think about getting involved as a Forest Ranger:

I think it’s great as children are able to have a break from being inside in a classroom and are able to learn new skills in a natural environment and appreciate being outside! Esther Davenport

... Natural Curriculum is beneficial for pupils as it allows them to develop holistically in an environment which differs from standard mainstream education and gives them time away from the classroom! And for us, it is allowing us to experience this different type of learning and actually see the benefits first hand. Lucy Jennison

Avril Rowley, the programme leader for the Natural Curriculum, states: “This kind of project is an essential part of the education journey. It gives the perfect opportunity for our students to gain key skills needed to teach and work with children outside the classroom.” Whether it’s organising and supervising mini beast hunts, teaching pupils how to safely cook on an open fire, or facilitating teamwork games, being involved with the Natural Curriculum gives our degree students a very special opportunity to gain insight into child development, education, wellbeing and skill acquisition.
