SHOW YOUR BEST WORK Each year art and design students get to show their final projects at the Degree Show - a highlight in the city’s cultural calendar. Students across the school take over the entire John Lennon Building for two weeks of celebrations, showcasing their final projects to peers, friends, family and industry. The Degree Show features a fashion catwalk, curated shows from each discipline and awards for students who have excelled during their studies.

This means you will be prepared for a wide range of careers in a variety of sectors; from the online and print media, broadcast journalism, marketing, corporate communications, independent filmmaking and teaching to name a few. WORK RELATED LEARNING Alongside your development of professional architectural skills, you will gain transferable skills that will enhance your employability once you graduate. You will hear from a range of guest speakers throughout your studies to help broaden your understanding of your subject and other areas of art and design. You will also have opportunities to participate in symposia run by the Architecture department as well as opportunities to enter competitions relating to professional development.


CAREER PROSPECTS To become a registered architect you usually need to work for an additional year in architectural practice then complete a two-year Master of Architecture (MArch) diploma. Once you have passed the RIBA Part 3 exams, you can practice in any EU or commonwealth country and many other countries outside the EU. If after graduating you choose not to go down the route of becoming a registered architect, a range of other careers are open to you. Past graduates have pursued successful careers as project managers, property developers, building contractors, furniture designers, lighting designers, architectural visualisation artists and journalists. Many of our graduates have successfully secured employment at world-class practices throughout the UK and further afield.

Throughout the course, in addition to developing your own work, you will have opportunities to consider and test the wide variety of roles that artists play in building arts communities, resources and engagement. Your course will include a programme of lectures by visiting artists and arts professionals, external exhibition opportunities, work experience and placements, and a full programme of weekly workshops, lectures and seminars presented by our Fine Art teaching team of artists, curators and writers many of whom work internationally in their fields of expertise.

WHAT WILL YOU STUDY At Level 4 you will be introduced to studio culture and be encouraged to use the full range of workshops and resources in the School of Art and Creative Industries. This level also aims to take you out into the city and start to give you an understanding of how artists work and participate in Liverpool’s dynamic creative environment.

In your second year the focus shifts to allow you to develop more specialist skills and knowledge in the arts practices you want to develop - this will include both studio-based experimentation and live or real world experiences. Students at this level can also study abroad for one semester. Your final year is a time to develop your professional arts practice and think about how you present and share your ideas with the world culminating in the annual School of Art and Creative Industries Degree Show. CAREER PROSPECTS There are many opportunities for contemporary artists who are building their own professional practice. You may be able to apply for grants, and supplement your income by running workshops for galleries and museums, taking up residencies, working collaboratively with other artists and artists groups, managing projects within the cultural sector and curating exhibitions and shows.

A number of our students and graduates enter and are successful in high profile awards and professional schemes. Additional to this experience, you will have the chance to produce an online portfolio reflecting your personal development and future career aspirations to show to prospective employers. WORK RELATED LEARNING We have many influential connections, both in Liverpool and internationally. Our links with organisations such as the Bluecoat Arts Centre, Open Eye Gallery, National Museums Liverpool, FACT, Liverpool Biennial and Tate Liverpool have resulted in successful projects as well as employment for students. Students can undertake our placement at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice, which offers unique and varied opportunities to experience the art world as well as adding real value to your CV. Our Internship module offers opportunities to gain work experience in a wide variety of art-related institutions, including museums and galleries, auction houses, sites of cultural heritage, archives and artists’ studios. We also offer unique opportunities to experience the art world through exchange placements at universities all over Europe and in the USA. In your final year, you will have the opportunity to take on a major project, which could involve running art activities in schools, curating an exhibition, conserving art works or writing for a newspaper.

CAREER PROSPECTS Past graduates have found careers as curators, education officers, in marketing, coordinators of volunteers in museums, conservation experts, teachers, auctioneers, arts administrators, art insurance brokers, archive managers, grants administrators and journalists. The course has a strong network of supportive graduates who regularly feed back into the course by making visits and providing advice. A number go on to study postgraduate degrees.

WORK RELATED LEARNING Alongside your development of professional architectural skills, you will gain transferable skills that will enhance your employability once you graduate. You will hear from a range of guest speakers, throughout your studies to help broaden your understanding of your subject and other areas of art and design. You will also have opportunities to participate in symposia run by the Architecture department as well as opportunities to enter competitions relating to professional development. The emphasis of this programme is the creative adaptation, repurposing, remodelling, rebranding, restyling and refitting of existing buildings. Taught principally through a studio environment that is seamlessly underpinned and informed by lectures and workshops, the over-arching ambition is to create graduates with artistic flair, and who are


technically skilled and grounded in the demands of the profession.

CAREER PROSPECTS To become a registered architect you usually need to work for an additional year in architectural practice then complete a two-year Master of Architecture (MArch) diploma. Once you have passed the RIBA Part 3 exams, you can practice in any EU or commonwealth country and many other countries outside the EU. If after graduating you choose not to go down the route of becoming an interior architectural designer, a range of other careers are open to you. Past graduates have pursued successful careers as project managers, property developers, furniture designers, lighting designers, architectural visualisation artists and journalists. Many of our graduates have successfully secured employment at world-class practices throughout the UK and further afield, while others have remained in the city of Liverpool contributing to its evolution, taking key roles in leading practices that have reshaped the city over the last decade.

This vocational course offers many opportunities for practical, hands-on experience and work placements, thanks to our connections in the local, national and international media and sports clubs. For instance, LJMU has formed partnerships with various sports clubs and these important links have potential for placements and employment. Sports Journalism alumni have gone on to work as journalists and presenters with a variety of print, broadcast and online media outlets, and many have found work in the media and communications departments of sports organisations, including FIFA, the EFL, Liverpool and Everton football clubs. Typically, students will receive 12 hours tuition a week

and they will be expected to complement their studies by reading books, journals and newspapers, and watching and listening to news and sports bulletins on television, radio and online. The School of Art and Creative Industries is well equipped and there should be no reason for students to buy extra equipment. Gaining work experience throughout the course is strongly advised and offers invaluable opportunities to practise your skills in real world environments to help put you at a distinct advantage over other applicants once you enter the competitive job market. In fact, many students are offered permanent jobs at institutions like the BBC, Reach PLC, Talksport and a range of professional sports clubs on the basis of a successful work placement. Liverpool has a thriving journalism industry, with one of the UK’s largest and most successful evening newspapers and the largest newspaper publisher on its doorstep. Several TV companies are based in the city, including the BBC and Granada. The region also has a significant number of radio stations, the national velodrome, countless football, rugby union and rugby league clubs and is a major player in combat sports. In short, Liverpool is a fantastic patch for news and sport making it one of the best cities in the UK to study and learn the exciting craft of sports journalism.

CAREER PROSPECTS Our graduates have a good track record of employment, forging successful careers as reporters, writers, freelance journalists, digital content producers and sports media professionals. As well as working in traditional sports news organisations they can be found in club media departments, public relations roles and digital marketing agencies.
