After working for a number of years in the field, HOLLY MANNION knew that she wanted to take the next step in her career and study a postgraduate qualification in mental health. After researching a range of courses, from taught to research, Holly decided that the MA Mental Health course at LJMU was the right path for her.
“I felt that LJMU met all of my criteria really! My course includes some fantastic modules which were of interest to me and relevant to my work, it’s a reasonable combination of teaching with self study, and it’s affordable” Holly explains. “Not to mention it’s in my home city so the location is a bonus too.”
During her studies, Holly has continued her role in the voluntary sector as a team leader full time, while studying her Master’s part time. Even though her job in a mental health inclusion service can be demanding and stressful, she has found a way to balance the two. “I do my best to manage my time each week [and] I try to plan my study time where I can focus on specific tasks. Then, I can still fit in a bit of free time for myself too, which is important. My employers allow me to work flexibly as well which is a massive help.”
Now most of the way through her course, Holly is reflecting on which parts of her postgraduate studies have been the most enjoyable. Even though she enjoys research and how it’s structured and conducted, Holly has found her third module really fascinating. “I’ve just started my third
module, which is the final core module. [In this module] we are exploring how mental health and mental illness have been portrayed throughout history, in arts and literature, and how we view mental illness and mental health today. I am already really enjoying this as I get to read about mental health in a historical context and map out its evolution to modern day society. I can also contribute my own experiences and practice while discussing and debating things with other students during our interactive teaching sessions.”
Not only did Holly develop her academic knowledge during her time at LJMU, but she was also able to achieve her goal of returning to study after a break between her undergraduate studies and her postgraduate studies. We asked her if she had any advice for those wanting to do the same. “Just do it! I think it can feel harder if you don’t go into postgraduate study straight from your undergraduate, but it is absolutely accessible and manageable whatever your circumstances. I am so happy that I finally took that step. It’s not easy but I know that it will be worth it. If I can do it, anyone can!”

From undergraduate study to a master’s and now a professional doctorate at LJMU, RICHARD MURRAY has been on a mission to turn his passion for sports psychology into a career in elite sport, and he’s making it happen
After completing both his undergraduate in Applied Sport Psychology and master’s in Sport Psychology, Richard knew that he wanted to pursue a career as a qualified sport and exercise psychologist within elite level football. After exploring the different routes available, he decided to stay at LJMU. “I am nosy by nature, all good psychologists are! The ability of LJMU to feed a research appetite is very high. I’ve very rarely been told ‘no’ in response to an idea which is testament to the idea that you have autonomy in research here. One ‘no’ came from wanting to interview VAR officials right after big and possibly inaccurate decisions… Probably for the best.”
Richard also values the freedom he has had to explore his research interests.
“During my studies, LJMU has brought in speakers from all around the world, from different disciplines and different perspectives, in order to expose us to the dynamic scope of sport psychology practice. It also helps us keep up with practice guidelines and utilise relevant research in our work.
Off the back of that the vast publication network that LJMU has is also an
attribute of the University. Being able to assist with research at such an early career stage was invaluable experience - something I’m not sure I would’ve got elsewhere.”
Although he has already gained a lot of experience, Richard has big ambitious plans for the future. “I would love to go out into the field, get some applied work under my belt at different levels of competition. I would like to grow my private sport psychology consultancy business and have clientele from all sports and all corners of the globe. Then, in a decade or so, come back to LJMU and teach”
Considering following a similar path to Richard? Here’s his advice: “If you are considering enrolling onto the professional doctorate, I would suggest having a good idea about your professional practice philosophy as an applied sport psychologist. If you are able to have a good idea about how you operate as a researcher, this would also help. Be open and try being vulnerable with discussion that is presented within sessions because it is useful and valuable to experience that which we want to create.”

When PhD student Martina Pizzolato attended an online course in facial reconstruction at the end of her masters within Forensic Anthropology, she found herself perusing an academic career in Art and Design.
Martina, originally from Italy, was finishing up her dissertation for her masters at Bournemouth University when she attended an online class in facial reconstruction. “I come from a forensic anthropology background and in that field, you learn very little about craniofacial analysis and identification. During my masters, I attended an online course in facial reconstruction and realised that I wanted to be a part of that field”.
After visiting a postgraduate event on campus, Martina met Professor Caroline Wilkinson and was amazed by the facilities available within the School of Art and Design. “The reason why I chose to stay in the UK after my masters was because of the Face Lab. It is a pioneering lab for craniofacial identification and is essential for my course.”
Although she could feel the step up from her masters to PhD, Martina put herself out there to get the most out of the experience by attending webinars and online events in the first few weeks of her course. “When I started, I felt a bit lost with all of the information that you receive, but the Doctoral Academy staff were incredible and whenever I had issues or questions, they were always ready to answer straight away,” she explains. “The webinars helped me meet other postgraduates in different faculties and departments so you can
create a connection with people like you that are going through the same things as you. This can make a real difference”.
Throughout her PhD course, Martina made the most of a range of opportunities to gain experience within the field, including some roles within the university itself. “As well as working alongside the rest of the staff in Lab projects, I felt that the course that trained me to become a paid demonstrator in the University was such a valuable experience, whether I wanted to stay in academia or not”.
Now, looking towards the future, Martina is hoping to continue along a similar path. “My goal is to have a career in academia in the field of craniofacial identification and become competent in facial reconstruction. I also would love to be able to keep researching the field and hopefully get into teaching”.
After changing her academic focus during her postgraduate journey, Martina urges others to not be scared to do the same. “Do not feel that you have lost time by doing something different than what your PhD is about, you have gained abilities and skills with your previous experiences that you can bring into your new postgraduate journey. At the end of the day, the PhD is all about learning and motivation”.

Our Student Wellbeing Advisors are the first point of contact for any support you need. They cover each faculty and are always on hand to help out.
At LJMU we want you to succeed and that means doing everything we can to assist you. Granted, postgraduate study requires much more independence than undergraduate study, but our staff are on hand to provide all the training and skills you need to take on the challenge and get to where you want to be.

STUDY SKILLS
Workshops are available on various aspects of postgraduate study including academic writing, effective reading skills, exam and revision skills, report writing and IT skills.
We provide pre-sessional English courses for those whose language qualifications do not meet entry requirements. See ljmu.ac.uk/isc for more details.
Our team provides information on postgraduate funding including loans, grants and bursaries, as well as offering guidance on budgeting and money management.
STUDENT ADVICE AND WELLBEING
Our team offers advice and guidance on issues ranging from health and wellbeing to accommodation and childcare.
SPIRITUAL SUPPORT
Confidential, non-judgemental pastoral care and support is available for students of all beliefs and backgrounds. We have facilities for quiet meditation, prayer and contemplation on each campus, as well as dedicated space for Muslim prayers.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

From changing career paths to discovering a new passion, ROXANA MUNOZ chose postgraduate study in International Business and Management at LJMU to open new doors and embrace fresh challenges.
“I wanted to experience university life in the UK, which I knew would offer a unique and enriching environment for both academic and personal growth. A master’s degree also felt like the perfect way to enhance my CV and gain specialised knowledge that could lead to better opportunities.”
For Roxana, postgraduate study has also been an opportunity to take a bold new direction. “I’ve used my qualification to shift careers. I was working in healthcare and social services, but I realised it wasn’t where my passion lay. Business and management suit my skills much better, so I knew I had to make the change. Starting from scratch at master’s level has been challenging, but I enjoy pushing myself. I see challenges as the best way to grow and perform under pressure.”
That motivation has carried into the classroom, where new subject areas have sparked real excitement. “Since I’ve never studied business before, everything feels new and stimulating. The strategy module stands out as my
favourite. It’s also the most challenging, but that’s what makes it so engaging. I love the deep analysis and critical thinking it requires.”
Looking ahead, Roxana has big ambitions. “My career goals are to work in a leadership role at a large company, contributing to its success while developing my own skills. Ultimately, I want to open my own business and achieve financial freedom. My postgraduate qualification is helping me get there by giving me the knowledge, skills, and confidence I need.”
For anyone considering following a similar path, Roxana has some advice: “Go for it! Postgraduate study is a huge personal challenge, but it’s incredibly rewarding. It pushes you to grow both academically and personally, and the sense of achievement makes it worthwhile. If you’re passionate about your field and ready to embrace the challenges, it’s definitely worth it.”
So happy I did. If I can do it, anyone can.”

MONEY MATTERS
Deciding how to fund your postgraduate studies can be a big decision. The great news is that there are many ways to receive support for your postgraduate qualification. From accessing your country’s postgraduate student loan, applying for scholarships or working during your studies, there are many ways to make sure postgraduate study is accessible for you. But here’s an overview of what you can access:
POSTGRADUATE MASTERS LOAN
Students from England, Wales or Northern Ireland attending eligible full and part-time masters courses can apply for government loans of up to £12,858 (England), £19,225 is available as a combination of grant and loan in Wales. Students from Northern Ireland can apply for a non means-tested loan for their tuition fees. The loan is capped at £6,500 per student.
Students who are normally resident in Scotland and are studying for a course not available in Scotland, can apply for a postgraduate tuition fee loan up to a maximum of £7,000 for full-time courses, £3,500 for part-time. Eligible full-time students can also apply for a living cost loan of up to £6,900. This funding is not means tested.
POSTGRADUATE
INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS
LJMU offers a series of scholarships for international applicants on taught masters programmes and research degrees. These scholarships take the form of fee waivers. See ljmu.ac.uk for more details.
TEACHER TRAINING
Teacher training is funded in the same way that undergraduate courses are funded, via government loans and grants. There are also bursaries depending on your degree classification and the subject you are going to teach.
NHS COURSES
You can apply for a bursary for some masters level NHS courses. The funding cycle opens in April for September starters. The NHS Learning Support Fund also provides grants for eligible students studying on masters courses with Registered Nurse Status attached.

RAFFAELLA MINELLA – FROM ITALY TO LIVERPOOL
From developing her knowledge to landing her first lead role on an excavation, Raffaella knew studying a postgraduate qualification in Liverpool would open all the right doors for her career.
With a wish to work in forensic anthropology, Raffaella knew the best way to continue the development of her skills would be through completing a postgraduate degree. Despite never having been to the UK before, Raffaella moved from Italy to study at LJMU and couldn’t be happier with her decision.
During her studies, Raffaella was able to get involved with many different projects, including a humanitarian project in Cyprus. Raffaella, along with her lecturers and selected students, were able to exhume and identify the remains of Greek-Cypriots who were killed during the bombing of a temporary field hospital in the Paphos area over 50 years ago. “The Cyprus mission has been one of the best professional experiences I’ve ever had, and I am extremely glad that I jumped on the opportunity despite the fact that I was in the middle of my MSc dissertation data collection” she explains. “It gave me the chance to apply everything that my degree has taught me in some real-life context, and to observe how experienced professionals in the field behave and work, constantly learning something new from them.”
After gaining this experience, Raffaella then was offered the opportunity to get her masters research project published in a major academic journal. “My teachers were really supportive,” Raffaella says. “They believed in my work and persuaded me to send it out to journals and conferences. They helped me through the whole publishing process, and it was one of the best things that could have happened to me.”
Raffaella’s studies haven’t ended here. She is now considering a PhD, however she wishes to continue gaining practical experience before continuing with her studies. “After a few excavations as a volunteer, I’ve been made lead archaeologist of my team for summer excavations!” she smiles. “I’m really happy about this because the experience I’m gaining is going to help me so much in the future. In the meantime, before this next project begins, I am doing an internship, working on an anthropological project. Everything has fallen into place, and I am so thankful to LJMU for the support it has shown me.”
