YOUR WELLBEING The health, welfare and happiness of our student community is our number one priority. Our Student Advice and Wellbeing team is here to support you with any issues that are affecting your health and/or mental wellbeing. You can book one-to-one appointments with an advisor, join a workshop or access a whole host of online resources as well as connecting with the students’ union and your halls of residence for additional support throughout your time here.

I completed a virtual placement.

This involved developing resources online to research the effects of nutrition on immunity and the impact sedentary lifestyles can have on the immune system. This is currently a hot topic and it has opened my eyes to the opportunities available to work online.

FEEDBACK FROM VIRTUAL EVENTS 2020

The virtual event gave me an insight into what it’s like to study at Liverpool John Moores University and student life. The videos were really well organised and informative, they have helped me gain a further insight into what degree I aim to do at Liverpool John Moores.

Everything was accessible and easy to find. There was a wide range of information that was fitting and interesting.

The staff in all of the talks were super friendly and made sure to answer all the questions they were asked.

They spoke and acted like they wanted to be there and genuinely cared about the people and future students.

The course session was very detailed and covered all my questions without needing to ask anything. Most of all it put me at ease and made me feel welcome.

I liked having students involved as well as they gave a good insight into what they think about the course and how it’s benefited them.

Visit the Albert Dock. With so many amazing restaurants, cafes and bars you will never be short of somewhere to grab a bite to eat once you have looked round the Tate Modern, Museum of Liverpool and International Slavery and Maritime museum. There is just no way you can live in Liverpool without learning about its diverse history.

Go to one of the many parks just outside the city centre. Whether it be Calderstones Park with its beautiful walled garden or Sefton Park with its incredible palm house, there are so many amazing green spaces to clear your mind.

Get the ferry across the Mersey. It is a quick, whistle stop tour across the North Wirral coastline as well as a brief history of Liverpool with the iconic theme song from Gerry and the Pacemakers, come rain or shine, and it’s a great afternoon out.

HOME SWEET HOME As a new LJMU student you are guaranteed a room in high quality city centre accommodation.

LJMU is committed to helping you find accommodation that best suits your needs, budget and lifestyle. You can choose one of 4,000 bedrooms in high quality accommodation across Liverpool city centre. Most bedrooms feature private en-suite bathrooms and all have individual WiFi connections – the cost of which is included in your rent.

Our website has detailed information on our student accommodation including virtual tours, photos and a breakdown of facilities offered by the different sites.

CRIMINOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY GRADUATE For me, living in student accommodation is a great way to move out for the first time and have your first real taste of independence. All your bills are included, which takes away the hassle, plus you get to meet so many people from different courses and backgrounds. I love the hustle and bustle of being in the city centre; there is always something to do on your doorstep!

My advice for new students:

Be friendly with your flat mates and share certain foods, bread, salt, etc. so you don’t let food go to waste.

Clean as you go - it keeps mess to a minimum and makes your job easier.

Don’t suffer in silence - if you are struggling with anything talk to someone. The staff on reception or your hall’s accommodation mentor are there to help.

CONTRACTS

MONEY MATTERS

Accommodation contracts are known as ‘tenancy agreements’ or ‘tenancies’ and are legally binding for the full period once signed. Unless there are exceptional grounds for the tenancy to be cancelled, you are liable for rent until the end of the contract or until a replacement is found.

Rent is paid in three equal instalments that coincide with your student funding payments if you are a UK student, who can provide a guarantor*, so it is important that you apply for your student funding as soon as possible – don’t put this off!

Tenancies commence on Friday 17 September 2021 and finish 42 weeks later on Friday 8 July 2022. Induction week for new students starts on Monday 20 September and teaching begins for most courses on Thursday 23 September 2021.

All tenancy agreements cover the full academic year so you don’t have to take your belongings home at Christmas and Easter. Your room is yours for the duration of the contract.

You can stay on in your hall after the first year if you wish in all cases*.

Alternatively you can move to a different hall in the city centre that better meets your needs or your budget.

It is a good idea to try and work out your budget at this stage and choose your accommodation according to what you can afford. More information about student funding can be found on pages 42-47. *Your guarantor will most likely be a parent or guardian, and they must agree to act in this capacity.

MATURE STUDENTS The majority of students entering accommodation come to university straight from school or college and are under 21. If you prefer a quieter study environment, rooms are reserved for older students at a number of our city centre locations.

If you do have any particular requests, such as living in a flat with

older students, please indicate this on your accommodation request form. Every effort will be made to meet your needs but this cannot be guaranteed in all cases. If you would prefer to live in a private house or flat, contact Liverpool Student Homes (LSH): liverpoolstudenthomes.org/ accommodation

HEALTHCARE STUDENTS

DISABLED STUDENTS

Nursing, midwifery and paramedic students have different schedules due to placement work, often getting up when other students are going to bed!

For this reason we strongly recommend healthcare students choose Atlantic Point, Glassworks or Marybone 3 so that they can share their flat with students on similar courses.

Facilities for students with disabilities are constantly improving and LJMU is committed to ensuring a high standard of living for all students, whatever your needs. If you require accommodation with particular adaptations, it is important that you inform us as soon as possible so that the necessary arrangements can be made. We can also arrange for you to visit our accommodation to check that it will meet your needs. To discuss, please contact us.

Nursing and midwifery students are given an annual tenancy at a lower weekly rent, to reflect the different teaching calendar for these courses.

BOOKING YOUR ACCOMMODATION 1

MAKE YOUR CHOICE Read the information here and online ljmu.ac.uk/accommodation and decide where you would like to live.

SUBMIT YOUR REQUEST Once LJMU is your Firm (first) choice, you can submit your accommodation request via the applicant area of our website from 1 February 2021. Bedrooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis and you can submit your request regardless of whether you hold a conditional or unconditional offer.

3 Request your student accommodation online from 1 February 2021 ljmu.ac.uk/applicant

FINALISE YOUR BOOKING Within 10 days of submitting your request you will be contacted by your chosen accommodation provider by email. You must follow their instructions and make the initial payment requested in order to finalise the booking of your room.

If you hold a conditional offer from LJMU and are unsuccessful, any payment made for accommodation will be refunded and your tenancy agreement cancelled.

You can contact our Accommodation Office at any time for advice and guidance.

Don’t forget, booking your room via the LJMU Accommodation Office is the only way to be sure of living with other new LJMU students.

My current role as a Clinical Research Assistant was advertised on the job board on Careers Zone 24/7. The Careers, Employability and Enterprise Team were a big help during my application process.

Before submitting my CV and cover letter, I made an appointment with one of the Employability Advisers from the team to review these documents and provide some suggestions for amendments. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS IDEA The Little Green Juice Box is a mobile juice and smoothie bar, and a juice and smoothie supplier. We create cold pressed juices and fresh smoothies using locally sourced (and some homegrown) ingredients. We operate from a quirky, upcycled vintage horse trailer, trading at sporting events and festivals.

HOW DID LJMU’S CENTRE FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP HELP? LJMU’s start-up school has been an invaluable resource in helping me to take my business from the planning stages to actually trading. I also successfully applied for funding to help buy some of the more expensive pieces of equipment for the juice box.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE FUTURE?

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR FUTURE LJMU ENTREPRENEURS?

I would like to have a fleet of little green ‘boxes’ dedicated to bringing healthy, vegan friendly food options to events across the UK.

1. Plan for success but always have a back-up. It’s the attention to detail that helps things to run smoothly.

2. It’s OK to fail – when you run a business, things go wrong, a lot.

But, it’s what you do afterwards that counts. Learn from your mistakes and remember that it’s never too late to turn things around.

3. Networking works – I’m a bit networking phobic but, the Centre for Entrepreneurship convinced me to get out there and meet other business people, online and in the real world. I’ve made some very helpful connections at networking events and, finally, setting up a LinkedIn account helped me to secure some big clients online too.

TUITION FEES AND LOANS You will be charged a tuition fee for each year of your course Tuition fee rates for 2021/122 have not yet been confirmed by the government. In 2020/21 the university charged a tuition fee of £9,250. This fee is subject to an annual inflationary increase.

There is no need to pay your tuition fees up front as eligible students can apply for a tuition fee loan for each

year of their course. This loan is not means tested which means your household income will not affect your eligibility.

Your tuition fee loan will cover all of your tuition fee costs and will be paid direct to LJMU. See page 46 for information on loan repayments.

STUDENT LOANS FOR LIVING COSTS (MAINTENANCE LOAN) In addition to a tuition fee loan, you can also apply for a loan for your living costs. The amount you will be eligible to receive depends on a number of factors such as your household income and if you are living in your parental home or elsewhere.

The maximum loan amount for a student from England, 2020/21 figures, was: n £7,747 if you are living in your parental home while studying n £9,203 if you are living elsewhere while studying (such as student accommodation or your own home)

You will pay for your accommodation on dates that coincide with your student maintenance payments, making it easier for you to plan your budget

APPLYING FOR STUDENT FUNDING Apply online gov.uk/studentfinance from February 2021 if you are starting a course in September 2021.

LOAN TUITION FEES REPAYMENTS AND LOANS Any loans you take out to cover your tuition fees or living costs will be added together into a single loan account. This means that when you start paying back your student loans, you will only make one affordable monthly payment.

Your repayment amount is always based on a percentage of your salary, not how much you have borrowed.

If your income is over the applicable repayment threshold (you can find these on page 44) your employer will start taking repayments from your salary just like tax and national insurance, and after 30 years** any money still owed is written off.

The table opposite will give you an idea of what your repayments might look like once you have left university and you’re earning over £26,575*.

HAVE YOU LJMU STUDIED BURSARY BEFORE? If you have not studied at university before, student funding is generally available for the length of your course, plus an additional year (if required).

Additional funding may be available for students that have had to leave a course due to health problems or for other personal reasons.

It is really important that you seek advice if you have studied previously. We can clarify exactly how your prior study will impact on your future entitlement and advise you on what steps to take to maximise any funding available.

LJMU bursaries are automatically paid to eligible students every year of your course – you do not need to apply. The annual LJMU bursary is currently £500.

LJMU bursaries are additional, free money that you don’t have to pay back. How you spend it is up to you.

To qualify you must meet the residence requirements for student funding (grants and loans) and have a household income of £25,000/year or less. You must also be paying the annual maximum university tuition fee which is £9,250 for 2020/21.

STUDENT SUPPORT FUND Sometimes despite your best efforts you can find yourself in financial difficulty. This could be due to a delay in funding or unforeseen circumstances. LJMU’s Student Support Fund is available to students who find themselves in such a position.

NHS LEARNING SUPPORT FUND From September 2020, in addition to funding from student finance, healthcare students studying in England can also apply for additional non-repayable funding from the NHS which includes:

n A specialist subject payment of

this grant is not means tested and all eligible students will receive this grant

n Parental support of £2,000 per year: this grant is not means tested. However, you must have parental responsibility for one or more children to be eligible to apply

n Exceptional hardship fund: this is for students who find themselves in exceptional hardship

DISABLED STUDENT ALLOWANCE (DSA) If you declare a disability or medical condition to LJMU, you can access specialist support and guidance to assist you during your studies. This can be anything from exam and study support to mobility and library support.

The Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) is designed to help meet the extra course costs students can face as a direct result of a disability, ongoing health condition, mental health condition or Specific Learning Difficulty. DSA is paid on top of the standard student finance package and does not have to be paid back.

DSA is part of your student finance package. It is not a cash allowance

but can pay for additional support you may require as a result of your disability e.g. a laptop, assistive software, note-taking or a specialist mentor.

You should apply for DSA when you apply for your student funding - please don’t wait. Don’t worry if you’re not 100% certain which course you will be studying, as just like your application for student finance, it is possible to update your DSA application at a later date.

STUDENTS WITH DEPENDANTS If you have either an adult who is financially dependent on you or dependant children, you can apply for additional means tested funding including a grant for childcare.

In addition, if you have an underlying eligibility for benefits (such as a lone parent) you can receive a higher rate of maintenance loan for living costs.

A Childcare Grant will cover up to 85% of approved or accredited childcare in both term time and holidays.

The Adult Dependants’ Grant is for students with a dependant partner and Parents’ Learning Allowance is a grant for those with children.

SUPPORT FOR CARE LEAVERS AND STUDENTS ESTRANGED FROM THEIR FAMILIES In 1957 John Lennon joined LJMU’s School of Art and Design, and it was to provide the springboard for so many influential aspects of his life.

In recognition of the influence the university played in his life, and thanks to the generous support of Yoko Ono, LJMU has set up the John Lennon Imagine Awards to help students who have either been in local authority care or who are estranged from their parents.

Eligible students receive a cash bursary of £1,000 per year of their course, in addition to funding awarded by social services.

We also have a dedicated member of staff here to support you and offer advice on everything from university life, budgeting to student accommodation – and anything in between.

YOUNG ADULT CARERS LJMU is committed to supporting young adult carers and currently works in partnership with Barnardo’s Young Adult Carers Service in Liverpool. During your induction, your tutors will outline what modules and topics you’ll be studying during your first year at LJMU. SPORTS With 50 sports clubs, JMSU has an endless supply of sporting activities to help you get your game face on! We have opportunities for all students to take part in sports at JMSU. You can join a social sport or compete in the weekly British University and Colleges Sport (better known as BUCS).

With over 60 societies, from British Sign Language to biology, poker to political, you can keep up with your hobbies or try something completely new. The landmark development includes a new, state-of-the-art sports building with plenty of open, green space. The five-storey student life building, situated on a transformed three and a half acre site, will house a range of student services. Additionally, we are a registered Hate Crime Reporting Service. We are here to listen and support you, and enable you to make an informed decision on what action you would like to take.

SPORT FOR ALL Sport is a big thing at LJMU. We are really proud of our university teams who consistently compete and win many of the major titles in inter-university leagues and competitions.

The students’ union offers opportunities for both ultra-competitive types and beginners to get involved, and you can choose from American football, athletics, boxing, badminton, basketball, cricket, men’s and women’s Gaelic football, football, hockey, volleyball and rugby teams as well as lacrosse, netball, swimming and tennis.

RESULTS DAY AND CONFIRMATION Shortly before examination results are released in August we will contact you with details of our confirmation services.

Following the release of A level results on 24 August, and assuming you’ve selected LJMU as your conditional firm choice and you meet all the conditions of your offer, you will be accepted on to your course at the university. Even if you haven’t quite met the requirements, LJMU may still accept you – please see UCAS Track for details on the day or contact our confirmation hotline.

Following confirmation of your place, we will send you your starter pack which will provide details on the university’s registration process and our student charter.

STARTING AT LJMU You will be expected to complete your student registration online before your arrive at the university for enrolment and start your induction programme. Full details will be included in your LJMU starter pack.

Your first week at LJMU will be packed full of things to do and places to see. You will receive an invitation to attend a welcome event where you will be able to find out more about university services, what’s happening in the city and meet other new students.

As a new student you will be expected to complete an induction programme prior to the official start of the academic year. Induction is your opportunity to get to know your academic team, meet your personal tutor and start to make friends with people on your course. Your starter pack will give you more details on what to expect and when.

John Moores Students’ Union (JMSU, see page 62) also organise a programme of activities to help you settle into university life and find out more about Liverpool’s exciting student scene. These events usually start during the official moving in weekend (tenancies start on the 17 September, with most students arriving the weekend of the 16-18) and continue until week one of semester one. Look out for updates from JMSU after confirmation.
