WELCOME TO SUMMERFEST 2023!

“Our chief weapon is surprise!” So goes a line from one of Monty Python’s famous comedy sketches.

Surprise is indeed a powerful weapon. It can make us delighted, giddy, uneasy, shocked, amused… but it rarely fails to evoke an emotion, and it is the opposite of predictable. Through this summer’s theme, “The Great Unknown,” we will be exploring the joy of discovery and rediscovery, the delight in the unexpected, and the mystery of the exotic. We will discover fantastical and otherworldly pieces, myths, fairy tales, dreams, and memories.

In that spirit, I’m particularly excited to take the audience on a journey into the unknown on opening night: I invite you all to embrace the unexpected, “trust the chef,” and experience a musical menu that will be announced from the stage and will be a mix of the familiar and the surprising—music that will delight and inspire.

The rest of the season has a lot to be excited about too. I’m thrilled to welcome the incomparable Thomas Adès as this year’s Composer-in-Residence and as performer and guest curator, in his LJMS debut. I’m also happy to introduce a new series on Wednesday nights: Midweek Masterworks: intermission-free concerts, each focusing on one of the most celebrated pieces in the chamber music repertoire, putting it into musical context.

This year also sees the return of the Synergy Initiative, which helps originate exciting collaborations between creators from different art forms. This year during Synergy Weekend we present a special preview performance of a sensational reimagination of Carnival of the Animals, which you will get to see first before it goes to Lincoln Center and around the country. Another Synergy event will feature a musical combustion between four spectacular musicians from the worlds of classical music, jazz, bluegrass, and soul.

There is much more of the program to talk about, but as usual the beating heart of the festival is the unparalleled roster of fabulous musicians that will be on stage for these four weeks.

I look forward to leading you all on this adventure—and seeing you at the Conrad!

FANTASTIC TALES: Schumann’s Piano Quintet DOORS OPEN 5:30 PM WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2 · 7 PM THE BAKER-BAUM CONCERT HALL Fantasy and legend abound in the first of our intermission-free Wednesday concerts highlighting and illuminating the cornerstones of the chamber music repertoire. The immensely popular and fanciful Schumann Piano Quintet and fantasy-pieces bookend Janáček’s quirky miniature piano concerto, based on imaginary animal encounters, as well as the U.S. premiere of fairy-tale pieces for violin and piano by our season’s composer-inresidence, Thomas Adès—one of the most important and celebrated composers, pianists, and conductors today (and our music director’s favorite living composer!).

Together again, Armenian American vocalist Lucy Yeghiazaryan and composer and bandleader Vanisha Gould present a collection of songbook standards, their own arrangements, and originals from their collaborative album In Her Words, that give the audience an opportunity to witness an intimate, late-night conversation between two women about the joys and pains of being a woman.

JAZZ @ THE JAI SYNERGY: LOUIS CATO TRIO THURSDAY, AUGUST 17 · 6 PM & 8:30 PM THE JAI GRAMMY-nominated Louis Cato, an internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter, takes the stage in The JAI for an evening of eclectic jazz-inspired performance with his talented band. You will recognize him from playing in the house band for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert since the show’s 2015 inception; he was recently named bandleader for the newly renamed “The Late Show Band.”

DREAMS AND PRAYERS FRIDAY, AUGUST 4 · 7:30 PM THE BAKER-BAUM CONCERT HALL Two major composers come to grips with their heritages in two heart-stopping pieces of virtuosity and expressivity: Mendelssohn, reconciling his Jewish heritage with his adopted Christianity in his stormy piano trio; and Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov, whose music blends Argentinean music, traditional Jewish idioms, and modern sounds into a distinctive style. MAGIC AND ALCHEMY SATURDAY, AUGUST 5 · 7:30 PM THE BAKER-BAUM CONCERT HALL This concert explores the seemingly magical alchemical processes regularly used

by Elizabethan composers to turn simple musical material into gold. Composers in Shakespeare’s London transformed their own music or the music of others, in turn inspiring Thomas Adès and Franz Schubert to do the same. This concert includes the U.S. premiere of Adès’ new clarinet quintet, described by the London Times after its world premiere as ‘arresting and magical” and the London Telegraph as “A triumphant premiere from our greatest living composer…”

MYTHS AND RITES SUNDAY, AUGUST 6 · 3 PM THE BAKER-BAUM CONCERT HALL Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, a musical depiction of a pagan ritual, is considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential pieces in the history of music.

It has inspired countless composers, induced a near-riot at its premiere, and even inspired Walt Disney to accompany the story of the planet’s creation and the extinction of the dinosaurs in his film Fantasia. In this concert we’ll hear it in the composers’ arrangement for two pianists, preceded by enchanting pieces inspired by Greek mythology.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 11 · 7:30 PM THE BAKER-BAUM CONCERT HALL Composers step out of their comfort zone and defy their surroundings in this powerful program. Gideon Klein’s ebullient and lighthearted String Trio was composed whilst the composer was imprisoned in the Terezín prison camp just days before his deportation to Auschwitz. Beethoven charted new ground in celestial music that was baffling to his contemporaries and has come to be considered a pinnacle of human creation. Having written almost exclusively just for the piano, Chopin’s Cello Sonata represents an extraordinary effort on the part of a composer who, only a few years from the end of his life, was determined to master a genre he had never before attempted.

PROMISES, PROMISES SUNDAY, AUGUST 13 · 3 PM THE BAKER-BAUM CONCERT HALL Schubert’s epitaph reads “Here the art of music has entombed a rich treasure, but even fairer promise.” It is hard, however, to imagine surpassing the last year of Schubert’s life—which produced the most enduring masterpieces in music, including his epic Piano Trio heard in this concert. Showing tremendous promise at the very start of his composing career, the 18-year-old Dohnányi’s extraordinary first Piano Quintet caused Brahms to exclaim “I could not have written it better myself.” Paul Wiancko wrote Closed Universe as part of an attempt to find beauty and peace in the midst of a bout of news addiction.

SOUVENIRS: Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23 · 7 PM THE BAKER-BAUM CONCERT HALL Memories of places and people we have loved, centered around one of the greatest pieces of the repertoire,Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence, an audience favorite that joyfully evokes the composer’s love of the city of Florence and his own musical joys and sorrows. Anthony McGill will showcase a piece Brahms came out of retirement to write specifically for a great clarinetist, while Augustin Hadelich brings to life Chausson’s “Poème,” both evoking memory and reflection.

UNSILENCED VOICES FRIDAY, AUGUST 25 · 7:30 PM THE BAKER-BAUM CONCERT HALL Whether silenced by political oppression, the horrors of war, or societal and ideological imperatives, the composers on this program managed to create lyrical and hopeful works often in the most challenging or horrific of circumstances.

From Schulhoff and Messiaen composing in Nazi concentration camps to Fanny Mendelssohn struggling for recognition in the shadow of her famous brother, from a Montgomery piece written in the height of the COVID-19 lockdown to Shostakovich’s brilliant response to the horrors of war, these pieces raise us up and give us hope.

In addition to Tchaikovsky’s lush and beautiful Serenade for Strings and Bruch’s Double Concerto for Clarinet, Viola, and String Orchestra, that will sweep you off your feet, Inon Barnatan has arranged Freddie Mercury and Queen’s biggest and most intriguing rock hit, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” for five cellos and piano. This will be the climax of a festival that audiences will be talking about for years to come.
