Celebrating 30 Years

Issue 137 : Our Community Newspaper

Emerald explained that she found out when her teacher Mrs Price came into the music class “looking serious”( no doubt trying to hide her excitement until the last moment) and then quickly said “ Emerald I have some news for you…you’ve won the Mobile Muster competition!”. “I felt surprised then excited, but this year we had 2 months to develop our films” said Emerald. She was able to work on story boarding her ideas, drawing and animating, with encouragement from her high achieving Mum and Uncle Alex who works in animation in Canada. Emerald added, “he helped me with including the sound and music and a couple of years ago gave me a Survival Kit for Animators which was really useful”. Uncle Alex when told of her win said that it was “really impressive” and Emerald now has a goal to make a five minute animation.

“Environmental Emerald” wins the 2021 National Mobile Muster Competition

Along with Dad who is an artist and Grandma Lynda being artistically talented, Emerald has obviously inherited strong creative genes. She took a lot of inspiration from watching You tube clips and finds animation “fun” and has a “passion for drawing whatever you can imagine, you can put down on paper or my i-pad”. Largely selftaught, Emerald started by “drawing eagles and flamingoes” and then discovered the possibilities of animation in 2017.

Huge congratulations to talented year 6 Springbrook State School student, Emerald Bloomfield who has won the 2021 nationwide Mobile Muster film competition in the upper Primary category. A runner up last year, Emerald who will turn 12 next February, has demonstrated a strong artistic ability from an early age. The theme this year was “Protect the Planet“. The winners were announced during Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week early in November. With her super hero animated character “Environmental Emerald”, she cleverly urges us to recycle our old mobile phones and do what is right by the environment. A panel of film, environmental and education experts selected the winners and finalists based on their creativity, technical skills, environmental message and relevance to the theme.

Feeling “nervous but excited” at the thought of the transition to a 2000 student high school next year, Emerald is more than ready for the challenges to come! Pam Hall 1
