MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear La Jolla Country Day School Community, This report draws to a close another remarkable year. Throughout this issue, you will see information demonstrating the incredible attributes and achievements of our students, faculty and community. The current year continues to be filled with great opportunities, challenges and accomplishments.

The LJCDS faculty and staff strive to immerse each child in a loving, intellectual and ethical environment to inspire greatness for a better world. We recognize that our work is cooperative and that our direction is not guided by the insights of only a few individuals. Communities of any kind depend upon teamwork involving specialists who have soaked themselves in their subjects, who live together, who criticize one another’s ideas, and each of whom makes an individual contribution to the future of our school.

It would be simple to list the accomplishments of our students: acclaimed scholars, acknowledged artists, champion athletes, performing arts award winners, community service award recipients, nationally recognized innovators and prestigious college scholarships. This collection of distinguished recognitions reveals the potential of our outstanding young men and women. But what we admire most about our students is their character.

When you step into a classroom you will recognize that our students are “imagineers,” who touch newness and change as an almost totemic reminder of what is possible in the human spirit and who are honest about the challenges that lie ahead. Our students are comfortable with change and unpredictability, yet they seem to know when to demand precision and the care for real negotiation. Their poise and competence come from a strong work ethic, modeled by their parents and faculty, and from the enormous opportunities provided to them by the LJCDS experience.

Human energy abounds at Country Day. Niels Bohr remarked in the later part of his life, “Every valuable human being must be a radical and a rebel, for what he must aim at is to make things better than they are.” We are not sure if we want our students to be called “radicals” or “rebels,” but we are certain that our students will make our world a better place.

LJCDS is forging a bright future in large part because of the unwavering support and generosity of those listed in this report. We thank them with all of our hearts.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES In the 2016–17 school year, we welcome Mike Dee as president of the La Jolla Country Day School Board of Trustees after serving on the board for the past two years.

Mike previously served as president and CEO of the San Diego Padres (2013–2016), the Miami Dolphins (2009–2013) and the Boston Red Sox (2002–2009). Mike and his wife, Karen, are the proud parents of Country Day students, Spencer ’19 and Tommy ’21.

I’m honored to serve as your president of the board of trustees. I want to thank all of the amazing and dedicated donors who make our efforts truly possible. Your financial support, no matter the amount, ensures that all students have the ability to have wonderful experiences. The success of the Country Day Fund (CDF) has a direct impact on the quality of an LJCDS education, with contributions touching every aspect of school: academics, arts, athletics, innovation, college counseling and more.

One thing I have learned from my time with this incredible board of trustees is that for a school to thrive, it must anticipate and embrace change. Through the CDF, programs continue to develop and advance, facilities improve, and faculty is provided with the most innovative tools for students to learn at the highest level. All of these things work together to enable our students to inspire greatness for a better world.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT HEAD OF SCHOOL FOR DEVELOPMENT It is an overwhelming sense of gratitude that fuels my passion for La Jolla Country Day School. As I begin my 30th year at LJCDS, I am both honored and humbled to be leading our development program. As a teacher and community service director, I personally benefited from the Country Day Fund each year, and I know the value and impact of every dollar raised. Throughout my career, I have had access to professional development opportunities and had the necessary resources to ensure I was able to give my best to my students. I have also seen the power of tuition assistance dollars changing the lives of so many of our students and families. Most importantly, I have been touched by the kindness of our students, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and alumni.

Parent of Emi ’17, Takeo ’20 and Akio ’25 As a parent of three children at Country Day, Angela Fukumura supports La Jolla Country Day School in a multitude of ways.

She has generously given her time and talents as Torrey Fest co-chair, dedicated Giving Tree volunteer, spirited team parent and Country Day Fund ambassador, along with many other programs, initiatives and events.

Angela explains why she volunteers as well as supports the Country Day Fund year after year: We believe that the education our children receive at LJCDS is one of the greatest gifts we can give them. The environment at the school has cultivated our children’s growth not just academically but in all aspects of their lives.

At Country Day, there are opportunities for kids to discover themselves and their interests throughout the day, semester and year. We believe that LJCDS fosters and encourages them to grow into independent individuals.

As we have chosen to send our three children to LJCDS, we feel it is important to demonstrate our support through contributing to the Country Day Fund and volunteering. We support the Country Day Fund to help provide for the opportunities that make LJCDS unique. For us, the outdoor education trips, the vast lower school library, the nocut athletic policy and the tremendous community service program are examples of programs that we feel make Country Day special. We support the Country Day Fund with a general donation to help the school maintain a standard of excellence.

As parents of a senior who entered LJCDS as a Tiny Torrey, we have seen the journey of an age three through Grade 12 education. We believe that LJCDS has fully prepared our daughter for any college she chooses to attend and for whatever dreams she decides to pursue. As our two sons progressed from Tiny Torreys, we saw again how their journeys, though different in many ways, have provided them with strong foundations for their futures. It is Country Day that provides that foundation.

TORREY EXPLORERS FUND The Torrey Explorers Fund (TEF) is a parent-funded venture capital program with the goal of helping LJCDS students accomplish projects and start social and for-profit businesses. It has a rotating panel of local entrepreneurs, vice presidents and design and innovation experts.

Together, this panel offers not only financial assistance to students but also mentorship and connections. The TEF had its inaugural pitch in May of 2016 and currently three student groups are successfully continuing to develop their products.

INNOVAT I O N SPACE At the beginning of the 2015–16 school year, we were just finishing building our brand new flexible innovation space complete with machine and hand tools, digital and analog electronics, 3D printers, safety systems, curriculum and a pile of parts. By the end of October, Middle School students were completing their inventions class where they were introduced to design research skills and developed innovative new toys. Meanwhile, the Upper School students turned that pile of parts into a fully functioning 120 watt, 2ft x 4ft laser cutter that is now one the most utilized pieces of equipment in the lab. Upper School students were deep into research for the project they were working on for CamelBak around team hydration. Students had spent time observing and interviewing players and coaches to tease out powerful insights they would later draw on.

By the end of the year, the design and innovation department had taught two Upper School courses and two Middle School courses; worked with several Lower School classes and Middle School core classes; and mentored numerous students on independent projects. In total, the LJCDS design and innovation program had a significant impact on more than 25 percent of the student population. This impact was evident in how Middle School students learned about electromagnetism by building working telegraphs, and Lower School students built working digital electronic systems to help them tell a story. It was also evident in the nationally recognized work that students presented to CamelBak at their headquarters in Petaluma, CA, as well as the four patent applications that were filed by students.

These major accomplishments were achieved by students with a staff of one and a half people. The design and innovation department now has a staff of seven. The 2016–17 year looks to be an exciting one.

THE UNFINISHED MAN The Unfinished Man’s history at La Jolla Country Day dates back to 1968 when its creator, Russell Forester, donated his steel and copper creation as a symbol of the school’s educational mission. Forester was convinced by parent, former board president and photographer Lynn Fayman to donate both the Unfinished Man statue, as well as a design for a nearby modernist fountain.

I first encountered “TUM,” as he has been nicknamed, in 2011 when he stood behind the Community Hall facing the Middle School parking lot, half hidden by the bushes and buried up to his calves in concrete. My encounter with him was in his second home, having been moved from the entrance of the school at the same time those new buildings were built.

At the time of my first sighting, I did not know anything of the history of LJCDS, much less TUM. The past five years have changed on both those fronts: I have come to greatly appreciate the rich and inspirational history of LJCDS, the importance of the Unfinished Man to students and faculty for the nearly 40 years he stood guard out front of the school, and, perhaps most importantly, the generous contributions of some 90 years of visionaries, faculty members, benefactors and parents.

Russell Forester’s gift of the Unfinished Man is merely the tip of that philanthropic iceberg. After some time undergoing preservation, he has returned to the campus. Alas, his lower legs did not survive years of the concrete base, but he will stand at the height of his former glory and return to take up his post somewhere indoors sheltered from the elements of sun, rain and salty air. Our hope is that TUM’s preservation and return will rekindle fond memories for some 40 years of LJCDS students and parents.

The trajectory of growth from a small cottage in 1926 with four students on La Jolla Cove to a 24-acre campus with 1,150 students in the midst of one of this country’s leading educational and commercial centers is truly impressive, and the school could not have made that leap without literally thousands of generous individuals over many decades.

THE CLASS OF 2016 SENIOR GIFT Leaving a legacy at La Jolla Country Day School is the goal of every graduating class, and while many traditions are celebrated with our seniors—the ringing of the bell, the painting of the rock and the coveted “senior skip day”—the class of 2016, along with alumna Lucy Smith Conroy ’90, added another to the list.

With her leadership and knowledge of LJCDS, the development team is committed to advancing the mission of La Jolla Country Day School through meaningful giving, alumni initiatives and community engagement. As we commemorate our 90th anniversary, we appreciate our school’s deep philanthropic roots and history of generosity.

Assistant Head of School for Development

Community Engagement Manager

Embarking on her 30th year at Country Day, Susie joins the development team as the assistant head of school for development. After spending nearly 20 years cultivating the community service program, Susie is excited to work with parents, grandparents and alumni in securing the future of the school and cultivating a culture of philanthropy. Gratitude defines her life and experiences, and she finds there is no greater privilege than to stand side by side with community members as they realize their potential to make a difference in the life of this school and the surrounding community.

As community engagement manager, Michelle’s role is to oversee the grandparents program, student philanthropy course and Parents Association activities, including volunteer engagement and the cultivation and planning of signature events benefiting Country Day. Prior to joining LJCDS in 2014, she worked with the Miami Dolphins Community Relations and Foundation for six years.

LANCE YEAMAN

Director of Principal Gifts Husband and father with a passion for philanthropy, Lance joins the team with the mindset to build community among the generous donors of Country Day. Having served for 10 years in the San Diego philanthropy community, he looks forward to meeting you for a round of golf or a cup of coffee.

ALANA BIANCO CRUZ

Gifts Manager Alana joined the Country Day team in the summer of 2016, after working eight years in development services at the San Diego Zoo. During her time there she covered every area of gift management, as well as supporting membership. With her extensive experience, Alana will support the team by managing the gifts and database to enhance experience for donors and parents.

Alumni Relations Coordinator Focused on managing our alumni program, Gillian works to engage Torreys of all ages and keep them connected to Country Day. Prior to joining the team in 2015, she was part of the development department at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Junior Achievement of San Diego County. Gillian is a graduate of The Village School, a PK–12 independent school in Texas and the University of San Francisco.

Eve joined the LJCDS community first as a parent for the 2015–16 school year. She understands the important role of philanthropy in furthering the mission and growth of the school and is excited to join the development team in the 2016–17 school year. Eve comes to LJCDS with experience in schools and nonprofits and is an attorney who practiced law in Philadelphia.
