FYE Second Semester Experience Update – Fall 2016 The FYE Second Semester Experience is a career-based assignment embedded into a gateway course. In support of course outcomes, it continues to grow organically at our College. Faculty throughout the College, from disciplines such as speech, business, English, psychology, history and sociology, have created career-based assignments in their courses. Students are gaining a deeper focus on where they are going with their careers and how their education supports their career objectives. Faculty have been involved with embedded career-based assignments in their courses for several years. The movement is now accelerating and scaling up college wide. Interested faculty met at the start of the semester and this has turned into more students currently experiencing the power of combining their career aspirations with course objectives, under the leadership of faculty.

How are we keeping the momentum going? A recent survey confirmed that 62 more faulty are interested in learning how they can become involved with this student success scale-up process. We will be inviting these faculty and others to sessions this semester to learn, answer questions and plan. Our desire is for next semester to begin with even more faculty involved College-wide. We started this semester with student videos and plan to continue sharing what this movement means to our students. We have also identified liaisons at each campus as a resource for interested faculty. In addition, we are assembling examples shared by faculty of their successful course-based assignments for those interested. We will have all of this in place for the beginning of next semester.

The student success category of the Service and Development Catalog will have a link providing information, examples and contacts. We are so encouraged that this approach to enhancing student success is gaining momentum under the leadership of our faculty.

How can I get involved? If you would like to get involved and take part in an information session for this student success scale-up process, please email Terri Marincic at theresa.marincic@tri-c.edu to RSVP for one of the following dates and locations: • Wednesday, Nov. 30, 6 p.m. at Metropolitan Campus, room MBA 209 (dinner included) • Monday, Dec. 5, 8:30 a.m. at Western Campus, room WSS G04-B (breakfast included)

Care Teams Update – Fall 2016 Service credit-eligible effective practice sessions have been held at the Metropolitan and Westshore campuses and are currently being planned for the Eastern and Western campuses. More than 60 faculty and staff have already attended sessions where they shared successful collaborations to address student needs as well as additional ideas to promote the use of Care Teams. The most frequently asked question is “What should I do if a student needs ___?” The answer: “Call your Care Team person.” Each campus has already developed a summary of available services and is working to further refine the system for contacting their Care Team. Care Team Scale Up representatives at each campus are working directly with campus leadership and Success Teams to build on existing outreach efforts such as D3 and IPEDS by providing systematic faculty support.

How are we keeping the momentum going? • Additional effective practice sharing sessions at your campus • Additional outreach from Care Team members • Integrate with existing faculty-led projects involving student outreach

How can I get involved? Contact the Care Team Scale Up representative on your campus:

Pathways Update – Fall 2016 How are we keeping the momentum going? Since the breakout session held during Convocation, the Pathways team had more than 50 faculty, program managers and staff express interest in learning more about College Pathways. The first session, held on Friday, Nov. 18 at Metro’s Advanced Technology Training Center (ATTC), focused on business curriculum. There were approximately 20 faculty and staff in attendance. The second session, which will focus on IT curriculum, is scheduled for 2-5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7 in room 131 at ATTC. An invitation for this session went out to faculty earlier in November. Two work sessions are being planned for spring – one for health careers and the other for manufacturing. Dates and times are to be determined.

How can I get involved? Faculty, staff and program managers can get involved by attending Pathways work sessions, discussing these topics with faculty counterparts who attend, or by contacting any of the current Pathways team members with interest. These sessions will be ongoing. Service credits are awarded to faculty for attending work sessions and/or for participation on the Pathways team. We encourage your involvement.

Prior Learning Assessment Update – Fall 2016 How are we keeping the momentum going? The Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) team is continuing our outreach efforts and revising the Prior Learning Operation Manual. Our outreach effort involves contacting counterparts chairs and encouraging them to meet with their counterparts with the goal of creating or revising each discipline’s prior learning assessment strategy, including bypass credit or other processes. Counterparts chairpersons received a PLA Inquiry Form at Convocation on Aug. 23, 2016 and were encouraged to submit the form to the PLA team, detailing their processes, by Sept. 16, 2016. While we have received some forms, there are still chairs who have yet to respond. The team’s goal is to receive a PLA Inquiry Form for every discipline at the College.

In addition, we are revising the current Prior Learning Operating Manual. As changes are made, faculty leadership – particularly the Joint Faculty Senate and CC-AAUP – are providing feedback.

How can I get involved? Please encourage your counterparts to complete your discipline’s PLA Inquiry Form and proposed PLA process and notify the PLA team once your process is solidified.

DegreeWorks Update – Fall 2016 How are we keeping the momentum going? DegreeWorks now serves as the primary tool for academic planning at Tri-C. Communication regarding DegreeWorks is framed within the College’s larger message regarding completion and the importance of academic planning. Students receive guidance about this system’s functionality during New Student Orientation, while enrolled in the FYE course (via the Academic Planning lesson materials) and during GradFest activities. Students also receive communication throughout the academic year about the tool, its use, functionality and the importance of working with a counselor to “lock” their academic plans. DegreeWorks supports counselors’ work with students through the use of the Academic Plan, “What If” audits and GPA Calculator features. Counselors receive training on key features of DegreeWorks and continue to utilize DegreeWorks@tri-c.edu to maintain open dialogue with ITS and the Office of the Registrar to address technical or curriculum concerns within the new system.

Instructional and library faculty are invited to serve as advocates for student use of DegreeWorks. Interested individuals can learn more about the College’s new degree audit system and its functionality by completing the on-demand DegreeWorks Advocate training in TEC (FD6145). Faculty who complete this training will be able to advocate the use of DegreeWorks for students as an effective tool for academic planning and provide referrals to counseling services. It is important that all faculty members take the time to learn about DegreeWorks and how it can impact student success. Faculty support is a key component of ensuring that all students have an academic plan!
