01 Nuttallburg Material Culture Museum and Visitor Center Type Time Instructor Location

This Material Culture Museum tries to deliver the appreciation to natural materials, meanwhile providing a nice research / restoration/ study environment for scholars and visitors.

The staggered arch and triangular system make entire structure super stable while have a pleasant space rhythm. The triangular division make the building volume dissolved in to smaller pieces that proportionally merged into environment.

By integrate the same treatment to the roof, the triangular system provides a series of valley spaces which introduce natural light and collect rain water spontaneously.

02 Smithsonian National Museum of Environmental Sociology Individual work Type Museum Time Sept.-Dec 2015 Instructor Shiqiao Li Location National Mall, Washington DC

This project is inspired by the complex dynamic relationship between human society and environment they relayed on. The emerging of civilization has been modified environment significantly, which give us both prosperous and disaster--I believe both direction were built up dynamically and worth memorizing.

The abstract concepts of humans subjective behave, environment objective responds, and a retrospectively perspective are represented respectively by three different types of space--1) main exhibition volume, 2) exterior public ramp, and 3) in-between penetrate bridges. These three types of the space, just like the abstract relationship, are conflicting, interacting, and then combining--- just like the eco-tone that intrudes and compromises by two species that want to coexist. These 3 types of space display content in 3 catalogs and guided 3 major visiting circulation. Spatially, the main exhibition column emerges from the earth, the exterior public ramp merges into the ground, while the in-between bridges fade the edges between previous two -- intrude, avoid and meander, which create super rich layered experience for visitors.

To support environment sustainability with the confidence in technique, the interior space are provided for 3D mapping and AR interactive exhibition, which achieve education goal vividly but save tons of exhibition material. Plus the digital visual arts can be updated efficiently and explains dynamic history seamlessly, which not only guarantee a good experience, but also inspire people to think.

When the top light is given, the two contradictory elements, natural waste and plastic trash, are switched via shape of shadow. This makes me think about the fixed scene can be inversed, and limited information can be multi-layered.

03 High-rise Building Design: Feel the Wind Focus on passive strategies and structure design

Individual work Type Office+Commercial Time Sept.-Dec. 2013 Instructor Lei Peng Location Wuhan, PRC I believe architecture design has its social responsibility to enhance the environment and enrich human spirit.

The neighborhood exposes problems like traffic congestion, low commercial condition, short of parking area and lack of public space. I researched carefully and use my proposed solutions as guide line to design the building.

Meanwhile I believe green is the future of architecture, and utilized a strong site condition -- windy weather to test a passive design creatively.

Guided by the physical facts that hotter air is lighter and wind flows from the higher pressure area to the lower pressure area--an interior wind tunnel is designed to maximum natural ventilation. Referred to the drawings for this project, the rotated typical plans with atrium in each floor plus the opening on lowest and highest floors make the wind tunnel possible.

It is extremely hot and wet in summer. However, the strong wind can decrease the uncomfortable feeling efficiently.

04 Residential building design: Custom Tailor Individual work Type Residence Time Sept.-Nov. 2014 Instructor Hong Chen Location Enshi, PRC Combining the advantages from both traditional and modern residential buildings, I strive to find a logic to create sample units that can match clients’ various requirements, local landscape and culture characters.

Since its flexible compound mode and good cooperation with mountainous regions, the project acts as prototype for this area, and can be widely spread and developed.

Residential building design: Custom Tailor Background: Our site located in a Chinese mountainous area, where a lot of traditional buildings locate. On the one hand, people ask for the modern living condition, on the other hand, they are very connected to the old building. So make the combination of advantages abstracted from both contemporary and traditional ones can be a good strategy.

When interfacing this situation, besides exploring more potential resource, how you are distributing and assessing resources is also significantly controlling portion of high-efficient infrastructure, quality social environment and self-sustaining system. In my scheme, I focused on redesigning the urban develop process and resources distribution system in different scales, while using energy infrastructures, agriculture infrastructure, mobility infrastructure, public space, housing and job opportunity as catalysts.

Invest infrastructure system at potential developing spots abandon private blocks, valuable public blocks, or black area.

Providing new construction platforms for housing transfer, enlarging the direct attach opportunity with RCs, enhancing the efficiency of getting resource.

Accumulate blocks vertically to enlarge their service range and public level aiming to supply more citizen’s requests.

The city’s topography is changed to a more balanced way, part of ground is released as the “free” niches, which have potential to tackle new programing reflecting the surroundings communities’ needs.

Integrate old structure and new program.

Stretch more paths to add the block’s accessibility.

More Resources Capitals are developed, which get efficient generation, distribution and reception involved in different industrials and the variation of programing. The inches unique physical and social identity.

Infrastructural Urbanism Design: Emergence Job Opportunity as Community New industrials chains can provide a large amount daily job for different knowledge background; meanwhile the whole building ask for both intelligence and labor for operation and maintenance. Job places are easier to access, and the average commuting time reduces from over 2 hours to 15mins. Most important, people work together as communities, and get their identities and satisfaction while working and supporting the system.

System integration The transportation station has tight cooperation relationship with other programs like Agriculture vertical panels, the market, the mall, the library and also the fabric factories. Citizen can get evolve in the producing process, and have more idea how the resources flow while they enjoying their living here.

06 30th Street Station West Underground Concourse Client Type Location Time Supervisor

Amtrak Retail Philadelphia, PA July.2017-Nov.2017 Vaki Mawema

30th Street Station is a historical icon in Philadelphia. We wanted our design represented a modern life altitude and contrast with the station elegantly. The fluid shell shape and curvy still structure add a attractive layer to the city’s gate way. The retail pavilion where the major brand lands, companied with water stair case and sunken plaza, leading the traffic down to the underground level, where you can find more retail and small business that make commuters’ life easy.

Besides, functionally by activating the abandoned tunnel and parking garage in between 30th Street Station and STAPE, our design successfully make people’s daily commute seamlessly and efficiently.

Environmentally, our design bridge the landscape design on south plaza and the Drexel square(facing the west plaza of the station), and the sunken plaza we designed, guide people spontaneously walking down for exploring and resting. Our design also provides qualified outdoor space for citizens.

Junior Achievement aims to equip young adults a better finance understanding, and our site is the simulation town where the final practice happens. By leveled up the experience in this interactive town, we created a energetic space for young adults by replacing walls with modular wood frames, which varies at wideness and fluid at shape. These modules were regulated as Entry, Seating, Kiosk and Shelf, and they successfully add a layer of social/relaxing space to young adult.

This project had its grand openning in Jun.2018 and has been put in use.

We were inspired by the historical Potomac environment and living style,and proposed series design to help the client to achieve a homey welcoming feeling for Westfield Montgomery Mall Extension.

The extension requested the design of retail storefront, hotels, offices, residential, and parking garage, and we see a lot beautiful compositions. To visualizing the idea efficiently, we did a lot analysis about successful store front design, and researches about classic material. By doing so, we had mature design prototypes ready for testing design options and make decisions.

By working with the clients, civil engineer, parking consultant, and landscape designer tightly, we figured a lot complex and meaningful problems and successfully delivered the entitlement.

Its’ incredible well-done details and tight standard fascinate me a lot.

I built up the Revit model from general building massing to customized details, according to existing CAD and in site measuring. It’s a great exercise for me to polish Revit skills systematically, re-understand building construction, and analyzing documentation.
