By Paula Gaelic e Rā o Waitangi Katikati 2025 was so special in many ways. Everyone really came together to celebrate as a community. Mana whenua really demonstrated manaakitanga, hospitality, kindness and support and the workshops were overflowing and busy the whole time.

People were sharing their skills and traditions after a very welcoming mihi whakatau from kaumātua Sam Tangiia from Te Rereatukahia. He shared the sentiment of everyone who attended that Te Rā o Waitangi for all of us was community and unity.

The food vendors made comment that the vibe, great music and community spirit had made the event one they won’t forget. This was the first time we have had a ‘festival’ type Waitangi event so next year will be even better.

Settlers’ Hall The committee of the Ōmokoroa Settlers Halls and I are all volunteers who work very hard to improve the facilities at the OSH. We receive compliments and thanks from many of the hall users for the tireless work that has been put into improving the halls for the use and enjoyment of the community. The halls may not be all new and flash, but they are appreciated by those that use them, all 1,000 or so people.

So it was very upsetting to read in the January edition of The Lizard News a very distasteful heading, “Smelly Settlers Hall”. I don’t know what would inspire you to use this heading. It does not bode well for encouraging new hall users to come to the facility after seeing the heading in print. We have had problems with strong odours around the halls, which appear to come from the sewerage treatment plant behind the halls through no fault of our own. We have had a long history of complaints to the Council on this matter and still do not have a resolution.

Editor: The supplied article I received was predominantly about “sewage smells that are wafting in and around the Halls and surrounding areas”. The article offered readers an explanation of diligent work being undertaken to understand and attempt to resolve the problem.

The words “leaky, smelly pipes” also appear in the article supplied by your committee. This article does not apportion blame to the committee. “Smelly” simply describes an unpleasant smell, which, in my view, is what any reasonable reader would believe the supplied article was explaining, in some detail. I selected the word “smelly” from your group’s supplied article as it accurately summarises the contents of the story. This is typically what a headline is for. I do not dispute any point you raise about the value of the halls and volunteer work, and I’m sorry that the situation is upsetting for you and the committee.

We will be holding a public exhibition starting with the opening night on Thursday 13th of March commencing 7pm, with drinks and finger food. The exhibition will be open to the public 10am until 4pm Friday 14th and each day until closing on Monday 17th at 4pm.

Did you know that the Katikati Art Group has been working as a team for over 50 years? Many artists have started their enjoyment of art here in the Mural Town, and many have contributed to the community, the latest being by using our talents to raise funds for the Abbeyfield Community complex.

We are always here to encourage and help new members, and many long-term friendships have been made.

30/01/25 In the early hours, tools and building materials were stolen from a building site on Heron Cresent, Katikati.

2/2/25 Overnight, a vehicle parked in a carport on Tetley Road, Katikati was entered, and a Uniden radar detector and cash were stolen.

2/2/25 An electronic signage trailer parked on SH2 near Rea Road, Katikati, had its batteries stolen overnight. Significant damage was also done to the trailer.

3/2/25 A commercial yard on Marshall Road, Katikati was entered and a smoko shed and vehicle entered. Various tools, including an inverter, socket sets, grinder, and reciprocating saw were stolen.

Doctors close books Big Fish Day anniversary atikati Medical Centre has announced it has closed its books to new patients. “Our wait times have increased to uncomfortable levels over the last few months. Our priority now is to provide a robust service for our registered patients.”

With this in mind, Katikati Medical Centre will not be taking on new patient enrolments. “This is not a situation we want to be in, and it will be reviewed monthly. We will operate a wait list over this period and invite patients to register as spaces open up.”

The centre says a lack of government investment over many years has resulted in chronic underfunding to general practice, making it hard to

recruit and retain staff.

OECD countries spend an average of 14% of their health budget on primary care. In New Zealand, it is a measly 5.4%. The crisis in primary care means that 1/3 of General Practices currently have their books shut to new patients, a situation no one wants to be in.

There is hope ahead. Dr Andrew Cox is returning in April, and they hope to have another new GP starting mid-year, but their application is currently awaiting a decision from Immigration.

Staff encourage people moving to Katikati to stay registered with their existing GP and utilise their telehealth services.

By Diana Ransley he 20th Anniversary of the Ōngare Point Big Fish Day was held Saturday 25th January. It was, as hoped, a great event and gathering with a record number of entries and just under 100 village folk present for the prize giving.

We were very lucky with the weather for the most part. Beautifully smooth conditions in the early hours, with a bit of chop in the afternoon.

The competition was hotly contested between locals, their family members and friends.

By Ken Shirley Board Chairman he board and its committees continue to meet regularly to expedite the management and advancement of our club. We are pleased to welcome David Ashton as an appointment to the board following the resignation of Neil Cavell late last year. The current board is comprised of Lynda Smith, Sue Dark, Max Greer, James Abraham, Rob MitfordBurgess, David Ashton, and Ken Shirley (chair).

We received extremely valuable feedback from player groups and members on the circulated concept plan for the substantial renovation of the clubhouse.

Lynda Smith ably and diligently led this project. The feedback provided indicated a clear preference for larger changing rooms and ablution facilities. Several submissions questioned the wisdom of a renovation, suggesting that a re-build may be more appropriate. The project to scope a renovation has not been a wasted effort. It is this process, with input from members, that crystalised the board’s decision to undertake a demolition and rebuild rather than a renovation.

In summary, the renovation concept presents considerable risk and could well trigger unforeseen and difficult-tomanage costing blowouts. A renovation could effectively end up as a re-build.

Perhaps the most significant advice is that a club of our size ideally needs a clubhouse area of some 750 square metres, whereas our existing building is only 500 square metres.

by Fintan Downes. Progress is underway with the consideration of design and construction options. It is planned that construction commences mid-2025, with completion in the first half of 2026.

We are also turning our attention to how golf operations and member facilities will continue during the construction. One attractive option is to first build a new cart shed, which is desperately required irrespective of the rebuild and then use that shed as a temporary clubhouse and golf management facility, together with storage.

A separate committee has been established to manage the funding and financing of the project. Any person/member with expertise and commitment is welcome to contribute to this task. Please indicate any expressions of interest to club manager Dayne Bulloch or committee chair Sue Dark.

The board is quite clear that we will not proceed until sustainable funding is secure. We will not commit to any debt that is not demonstrably serviceable.

Once the proposed design and funding options have been determined, we will consult with the membership and invite input. Any membership-based organisation requires a consensus of approval before embarking on a commitment of this size and nature.

A clear programme for the implementation of long-term projects and their priority is being developed by the course advisory committee chaired by board member James Abraham. It is appreciated that any major project will need to be placed on hold until the completion of

the clubhouse and the availability of funding.

Meanwhile good progress continues to be made on cart path extensions, drainage improvements, landscaping and other works that can be funded from current accounts. Much of this work is only made possible and affordable by the outstanding contribution of our volunteer teams and, in particular, by the input of a few individuals who dedicate their service on a near full-time basis.

It is with regret that we received a twomonth notice from Tina and Conrad to terminate their contract. They have provided an excellent service with an array of attractive food options. The board is now considering options for the provision of bar and catering services through the transitional period extending over the next 15 months.

With two months of the financial year remaining we are tracking very well,

with a significant year-to-date profit. We are up to date with our machinery purchases. The profit largely results from an increase in membership and fuller course utilisation, with a significant increase in green fee players. It must always be remembered that green fee players contribute some 25% of our revenue.

A Special General Meeting will be called in late February/early March with the membership to approve the recommended subscriptions for the ensuing year. A dedicated component will be assigned to the rebuild fund, but our recommended annual subscription will remain comparable with other Bay of Plenty clubs.

There are some exciting times ahead for our club as we continue to improve our course and facilities, taking full advantage of our special location.

Vegetation fires along train track

By Matthew Farrell ire and Emergency New Zealand received multiple calls about large vegetation fires burning along the railway line by Wainui South Road in Apata at about 12.40pm on Thursday, 30th January.

Incident Commander Bill Pike says the fire was contained by 3pm. Six fire trucks from Greerton, Ōmokoroa, Katikati and Tauranga were then dampening down hotspots. No evacuations were required.

“The fire was in bush and scrub, approximately 700 metres on either side of the train track,” Bill Pike says.

“There were road closures in the immediate area, but State Highway 2 remained open.

“We asked people to stay away from the area so emergency services could carry out their job safely.”

Bill Pike says Fire and Emergency was working with KiwiRail to establish a cause for the fire.

Love Grace Handbag Appeal race Millanes’ name is known in most households around New Zealand. In 2018, her life was tragically taken whilst on a Tinder date when visiting Aotearoa, and this story has stuck with us even today. But Grace’s memory now lives on in a remarkable way through the Love Grace Handbag Appeal, an initiative that combines Grace’s love for handbags with a mission to help women escape domestic violence.

Every year between Valentine’s Day 14th February and International Women’s Day 8th March, thousands of Kiwis assemble and donate handbags filled with essential items to help women passing through Women’s Refuges.

These bags, more than just practical gifts, are symbols of love, empowerment, and support for women starting over after unimaginable hardships.

Last year, the appeal set a target of 1,500 handbags, and New Zealanders responded with extraordinary generosity, contributing an incredible 5,269 bags, which were donated to local Women’s Refuges around NZ. This overwhelming response sends a powerful message: as a nation, Aotearoa stands united against male violence toward women, declaring it’s not ok!

The impact of these handbags goes far beyond their contents. Survivors who receive them often express how much these special gifts mean to them: “It’s not just a bag; it’s a hug and an inspiration to keep moving forward. I shall treasure this bag always.”

The appeal is run 100% by volunteers and requires a huge community effort.

This year, 54 lovely people have put their hand up to coordinate the appeal in their town/city and 79 local businesses have agreed to be drop-off points for people to donate. It’s a testament to the growing

momentum behind this movement and the spirit of generosity that defines Kiwis.

Want to participate? Here’s how. You can put together a handbag filled with love and donate it to your nearest dropoff point. You can organise a collection within your workplace or community and deliver multiple bags. Or simply spread the word by sharing the Love Grace Handbag Appeal on your social media.

When you donate a Love Grace handbag, it goes directly to the nearest women’s refuge, so you are supporting the women in your community. Some women often arrive at refuges with nothing but the clothes on their backs. These handbags not only provide essentials to get them through but also show that someone cares. They are a message of love, a boost of confidence, and a reason to smile when they need it most.

If you don’t have a suitable handbag, you may also drop off any items on the list at the drop-off points. These will be shared amongst the bags we receive.

The Old Library Ōmokoroa

By Alison Badger ur February artist is Ōmokoroa local Debbie Parks’ painting and Raku pottery inspired by her years in Australia. During this time, she explored her connection to her Aboriginal roots through serious art.

On returning to New Zealand and taking an Art Diploma majoring in Raku, through dabbling with different media and working with what life puts in front of us, this journey has been one of selfdiscovery on so many levels - mentally, spiritually and creatively. By combining her art training with her natural instincts, she has developed a deeper understanding of the importance of art to the soul. It’s a pleasure to be able to share the current stage of Debbie’s journey.

And of course, in addition to our gallery and craft collective, we are also delighted to support the Parkinson’s Awareness scheme, Alzheimer’s Companions, Peggy Purl, and Ōmokoroa Lions by collecting wine bottle tops and redundant spectacles, all of which can be re-purposed for the benefit of others.

Feasibility study explores communityowned grocery store for Katikati

feasibility study is underway in Katikati to assess the potential for a community-owned cooperative grocery store. The initiative aims to create jobs, provide a new local shopping option, and reinvest profits into organisations supporting those facing food insecurity.

“The Katikati community is incredibly generous in supporting Kura Kai and the Katikati Christian Foodbank,” says Kate Pfennig, Katch Katikati Board Member and project initiator. “However, demand for these services continues to grow. A cooperative grocery store would allow even greater community involvement while also offering another choice for local shoppers.”

The study is gathering insights into local shopping habits, food accessibility challenges, and the feasibility of a cooperative model. “We want to understand where people shop, what barriers they face, and whether a cooperative grocery store would be supported by both consumers and suppliers,” explains Jacqui Knight, Manager of Katch Katikati.

Scholarship for Katikati alumnus

Now, she’s setting her sights on biomedical study with the intention of becoming a pharmacist.

Either way, it was always going to be a career within the medical field, and this Katikati scholar heads off this month to begin making that a reality, aided by the BOP Education Trust.

Kyra, who will be studying at Victoria University, was one of 19 students last week to receive a BOP Education Trust Science, Technology and Emerging Industries Scholarship. The students from Western and Eastern BOP coastal colleges will each receive $6,000 distributed over their years of tertiary studies.

Joining Kyra on the stage receiving their scholarships in Tauranga were fellow Western BOP recipients: Tilly Thomas (Aquinas College), Emily Gillingham (Bethlehem College), Kimera Tal-

manufacturers, and farmers, and offer a mix of own-brand products and wholesale purchases. With a strong focus on customer service, fresh local produce, and affordability, the store could become both a community staple and a destination for visitors.

BOP Education Trust chairman Nick Earl says the Trust, which has been operating since 1985, is firmly committed to investing in the tertiary education of the Bay’s young people.

Over the years, 428 students have benefited from the Trust’s scholarships, with more than $2 million gifted in supportive funding.

Events kick off on 1st March with a crop swap food fiesta at Grow On Katikati. Bring excess crops, produce, garden cuttings or preserves (anything food or garden-related) and swap for something else.

Place your goodies on the table and browse the seed library, seedlings and stalls while you wait for the 10am announcement for swaps to begin. Be sure to bring cash to support local vendors.

On Sunday 2nd March, head to Ōmokoroa’s Cooney Reserve for The Amazingly Sustainable Race. The family-friendly Amazingly Sustainable Race will put your creativity, knowledge and problemsolving skills to the test. There will be everything from nature ID tasks to making your own seed bomb.

wo worthy local students successfully competed for the Ōmokoroa & Districts Lions Club Tertiary Scholarships this year.

The recipient of the Beryl Scott scholarship valued at $2,000 is Savarna Hughes, who is studying Health Sciences at Auckland University of Technology majoring in Paramedicine. Savarna intends to use the money to help with her studies and reach her long-term goal of working with the Air Ambulance Service. Always wanting to help others is second nature to Savarna, hence her decision to follow a career that focuses on health care.

The runner-up and recipient of the Precious Brothers scholarship of $1,500 is Molly Allen. Bright and bubbly, Molly speaks glowingly of the friendly Ōmokoroa community where she has lived her

whole life. Molly is in the fourth year of a degree in law and sociology at Waikato University. She enjoys interacting with people from all levels of society, and her goal is a career in family law.

Academically, both students are at the top of their class and, with their overall excellence, fully deserve these awards. Ōmokoroa Lions are proud to support these students and others in our community who deserve a helping hand. Applications for scholarships in 2026 open in November and are available to students from the Ōmokoroa district who have completed at least one year of tertiary education.

Fresh appeal after Poripori homicide

By Matthew Farrell olice are making a further appeal for information in a Poripori Road homicide investigation.

In November 2023, Tauranga Police launched a homicide investigation after Harley Shrimpton was killed at a rural property in Lower Kaimai.

He had been missing since he was kidnapped on 3rd November. A missing per-

son report was filed with Police by his whānau.

In January 2024, 23-year-old Tauranga man Piripi Tūkaokao was charged with murder, kidnapping and other related offences.

He is remanded in custody and will be appearing in Hamilton High Court in November 2025.

Detective Inspector Lindsay Pilbrow

says Police know there were others who assisted the defendant, and officers are continuing to follow positive lines of enquiry.

“It is crucial that all those responsible in relation to Harley’s death are held to account. It’s now been over 14 months since Harley was found, and since then, a dedicated Police team has continued with enquiries and is closely analysing new information.

“We continue to speak with people close to the investigation and have not ruled out laying further charges against others who may have been involved.

“On behalf of Police and Harley’s whānau, I want to acknowledge the significant public support shown over the last year, to thank everyone who has come forward with information during the course of the investigation, and to urge anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact Police and tell us what you know,” says DI Pilbrow.

Following its AGM in November 2024, the new committee is Peter Lochhead (Chair), Bev Cain (Treasurer), Rosemary Turner Waugh (Secretary), and new committee members are Ian Jones, Martin Stevenson and Fiona Mackenzie.

All residents of Te Puna are welcome to come along to any meeting, which is typically held on the second Thursday of the months of February, April, June, August and October, with the next AGM being held in November 2025.

By Ellen Haynes hile most of New Zealand has been on holiday mode, the OSH Committee has had a very busy time making sure the halls are the best they can be for 2025. The halls have had quite a bit of much-needed TLC. What has been accomplished over the holiday season? The floors in both halls have been sanded and polished; The carpets at the base of the stage modules have been reglued; The chairs have all been checked, cleaned and repaired (if you feel we have missed any, please put them to one side then email: settlers.hall@gmail.com).

The tables all had their bars straightened and realigned; a board was placed along the large hall storeroom floor, allowing the tables to be stored more easily.

Both halls can now access our deck, and it has a ramp allowing for wheelchair/ mobility access. This has created a lovely new space for you and your group attendees to enjoy, especially during our summer months.

The small hall roof has been cleaned, acid washed, rust treated and painted; New AED defibrillator pads have been inserted. Although thank goodness, we have never had to use this device, as a part of our duty of care, we must ensure this equipment is in proper working order in case there is an emergency.

The foyer carpet has been cleaned, and work will start for a ramp to replace the stairs outside the large hall kitchen – another major improvement which will make entry/exit so much more convenient for all.

Sheep on show at A & P

he inaugural Pet Sheep competition at the Katikati A & P Show was a raging success.

We had 17 entries, with kids aged from four to 14 years old and sheep aged from 5 months to 6 years.

They competed in Handling and Care, Leading and Calling, Cuddliest Sheep, Best

Tricks, Obstacle Course and, of course, the Fancy Dress.

Big thank you to our judge, Dianne Amott, from The One and a Half Acre Wood. It was a stonking hot day, and we appreciate your efforts. Also big thanks to Radha for stepping up at the last minute and doing an amazing job of steward, despite zero instructions and no time to prepare.

I organised and ran the Pet Sheep event, and then performed the Animal Magic tricks show afterwards with my trained chickens and sheep. Virginia from the A&P show committee was delighted to have more animals at the show, and the crowds really enjoyed watching.

Prizes donated included $75 of Farmlands vouchers, 20kg milk powder from PGG Wrightsons, drinks from Fonterra and my business Positively Together donated a treat pouch for the Best Trick class, plus special prizes.

First certified funeral home for natural burials ope Family Funerals is the first funeral home in Tauranga to receive certification for natural burials.

This certification, granted by Natural Burials New Zealand, underscores Hope Family Funerals’ commitment to giving families a variety of options so they can ensure their loved ones are laid to rest in a way that aligns with their values.

Natural burials are steadily rising in popularity as they provide an environmentally conscious alternative to tradi-

tional burials, emphasising minimal impact on the earth. The central principle is to return the body to the earth without including anything that would interfere with or pollute environmental processes.

When buried naturally, an unembalmed body is placed in a shallow grave in a casket made of locally sourced untreated wood, cardboard or a shroud. A tree is then planted on the plot, and the cemetery eventually becomes a forest or native bush memorial.

“When my parents started helping

other families with funerals in 1979, embalming was the default, and that did not sit well with them. They wanted the families to make that choice themselves, not the funeral home. So, we have always been strong supporters of caring for people as naturally as possible,” said Tony Hope, owner of Hope Family Funerals.

“Achieving the natural burial certification is a logical next step and helps us offer all available options to support families to be able to have the farewell

they want, with their wishes respected.”

Natural burials are currently available to Western Bay of Plenty and Tauranga residents at the following cemeteries: Hillcrest Cemetery (Whakatāne), Ōmāhu Cemetery (Thames) and Forest Grove Natural Burial Area (Hamilton). Try-athlon registrations Waitangi Day sailing open

By John Budden Sailing convenor he 6th February dawned fine at Ōmokoroa beach, at least it was by 10am. The flags were up on the Club staffs, and by 11am the RiBs and dinghies (six Sunbursts) were on the beach.

At that stage, we had crews lined up for four dinghies, so Luke, Yoda, Solo, and Rob G were rigged and waiting to compete for the Golden Centre Board.

There was an excellent breeze from the NE as the course was set off the Club deck to the Ōmokoroa Road mark, out to the moorings and back to the finish line.

As we waited on the tide, more boats turned up. A Wētā, a Buccaneer, a Hobie Cat, a Moth and a Dart cat. These were to compete for the Waitangi Day Shield.

Once all the checks were completed and three RiBs launched, the fleet of nine started, Le Mans style, from the main beach.

The faster Cats and the Moth soon sailed through the finishing “gate” of the Club, and the race was on.

Leading the Sunbursts, Rob G led Yoda for most of lap 1, followed by Luke and Solo. In the “large” yacht event, the Hobie, Dart, Moth, Wētā and Buccaneer slogged it out through three laps. As the Sunburst finished after two laps, Yoda came first, Rob G second, Luke third and Solo fourth. Hobie won the “other” race, followed by Buccaneer, Dart, Moth and Wētā.

Commodore Ian Blunt presented the Golden Centre Board to Lee and Dylan Moreton and Mark Faulkner from Yoda and the Waitangi Day Shield to Bill and Rochelle Morrison from the Hobie.

Back to school blues

By Jan Tinetti Labour List MP t’s my pleasure to wish all teachers, staff, and tamariki the best for the 2025 school year. The start of the school year is filled with excitement and potential, and I’m sure many – including many exhausted parents – are fizzing at the idea of gaggles of kids excitedly careening through the school gates, catching up with old mates and sharing holiday memories.

I

Unfortunately, National has chosen to make life harder for many local families.

Hungry kids of all ages who were getting Labour’s filling and healthy school lunches will be greeted at the new year lunch bell with a snack, as National decided last year it would reduce funding and mass produce the meals through Compass instead. That’s despite the evidence telling them not to, that it would affect kids’ learning, attendance and wellbeing at school.

At the same time, a review into school

buses means routes around the country are being cancelled or altered, leaving families with no alternatives to get their kids to school. Parents are now facing hours out of their day to get their young people to and from school.

National also pulled $2 billion from school building and maintenance projects, including the building of the planned Ōmokoroa schools, yet they somehow still found $2.9 billion for tax breaks for landlords. It shows just how wrong their priorities are.

Labour started the school lunches programme because we care about kids’ learning and don’t want generations going hungry at school. We added more than 2,200 classrooms and upgraded every school in the country.

As young people go back to school, we want them to make the most of their time there. Learning, playing and growing into people who will live fulfilling lives and contribute to our society.

We should be proud of our education system, and we can do so much better.

Finding funny in my fifties

By Sue Howard ’m a 54-year-old Ōmokoroa resident of five years, living in Tauranga for 17 years. I’ve been performing stand-up comedy for three years in the Bay and around the country, including making the semi-final of RAW, the nationwide stand-up comedy competition at The Classic Comedy Club in Auckland.

In my 50s, I was looking for new interests, to get out, meet people, and have fun. I got into comedy by joining the local improv comedy group Honest Liars. The group performs monthly shows at 16th Avenue Theatre with a wonderful group of improvisers led by Kathy Wilson and Jon Boyer.

Although I started out shy and nervous, this amazing group of people helped me discover a love of performance and the buzz of making people laugh. Through stand-up comedy, I’ve found friends and a community.

Despite the nerves, I then tried my first open-mic stand-up performance. It’s an amazing experience to laugh with an audience and perform alongside friends.

Growing more than chicks

By Ellen White uring Term Four of last year, the children at Te Puna Kindergarten participated in the incubation of chicken eggs. They had the opportunity to observe, monitor, and reflect on what was happening inside the eggshells. The kindergarten was fortunate to have access to an incubator, allowing the children to watch the process and witness the baby chicks emerging from their shells.

At the same time, our chickens, Tinah and Sophie, became broody.

Kaiako Catalina brought fertilised eggs from her home and placed them under our hens. While some of the baby chickens went back to Catalina’s house to grow, we have the babies that Tinah and Sophie expertly hatched and protected, growing our number to seven chickens at kindergarten.

Through this experience, the children gained an understanding of the complexities involved in hatching chickens. They learned about being kaitiaki (guardians), caring for the chicks, handling

them gently, and coping with the grief when a chick did not survive.

The children also discovered what baby chickens eat, their need for warmth, and how quickly they grow.

These learning moments are essential as they teach children how to engage with the natural world, develop empathy, and understand the importance of caring for the environment around them.

Ōmokoroa Men’s football

By Derek Sage mokoroa Football Club, in all its iterations, is now in its 31st year. In 1993, Tom Randles and Jerry Eaton started running one or two junior teams to give the kids something to do with only a paddock to play on. Up until 1995, the teams came under Blue Rovers in Tauranga, wearing second-hand Blue Rovers shirts.

Then Jerry Eaton initiated a committee from the parents, and sponsorship from Mike Deane Motors, Ōmokoroa Pharmacy, Flight Centre, Waste Management, One Stop Printing, and The Professionals enabled the club as we know it today to be born. They adopted the red and green of the pōhutukawa.

The original goals were built by Simon Priest, and nets were sourced from old fishing nets. Ground marking was performed by Paul Guinness. Within three years, the club had about 6-7 teams playing in the local competition.

By 1998, clubrooms were being built through donations by WBOPDC, Precious Brothers, Wayne and Chloe Wright. The old pavilion construction was undertaken by local tradesmen and enthusiastic volunteers. The facility was under the charter of the Ōmokoroa Sports and Recreation Society, even back then, with the strategic goal of a more substantial facility built into the embankment to replace it in the future.

The football club continued to grow, with many of us having children playing

for OFC and, like me, even involved in coaching them. Formed in 2003 the Ōmokoroa Originals senior men’s team has played consistently and with great credibility in the social Sunday league.

Having the unenviable distinction of being the only side without changing rooms did not stop them from being successful.

By 2012, the old pavilion was beginning to require remedial work and some of us set about reigniting the Ōmokoroa Sports and Recreation Society and carrying on the work of those before with the ultimate result of the new pavilion today. A pavilion with changing rooms.

In 2021, Lee Smith, Steve Cunningham and I started up the first Saturday side, and that was our first season. By the 4th

season, the football quality continued to improve, and so did our rankings. Coached successively by me, Gareth McCarthy and William Burdon, the team has matured and established itself.

It has a real family focus with good sideline support and after-match participation by our families.

If anyone out there wants to play for us, we are recruiting. It would be good to have enough for two teams this year.

Fun fact: Manchester United started in 1878 as Newton Heath, played in a paddock and changed in the local pub. Who knows what will be our future.

Ōmokoroa Football Club celebrates 30 years with new chapter s Ōmokoroa Football Club celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, the club’s steady growth and progress continue to both reflect and enhance the ever-growing Ōmokoroa community.

With registrations now open for the winter season, the club is preparing for what could be its largest intake of players to date. “The enthusiasm for football in Ōmokoroa reflects the national trend - interest in the game continues to grow,” says Ben Bell, Community Development Officer. “At this time of the year is when it starts becoming quite exciting.

The amount of interest from new and returning members is pretty remarkable.”

in the Old Ōmokoroa Pavilion on Western Ave. “The return to the old pavilion gives us a home that will serve our entire community well,” Bell explains. “It’s wonderful timing that this move coincides with such a significant milestone in the club’s history we’re super thankful to the Western Bay District Council for entrusting us with this amazing facility.”

Adding to the year’s achievements, Ōmokoroa FC recently received New Zealand Football’s Safe for All accreditation. “This recognition reflects the values we’ve always held dear,” says Bell. “We’re committed to creating an environment where everyone feels welcome and supported.”
