Tân Tây Kindergarten

Spring 2019 Term 9 14 weeks Option Studio III Mentor ./ Chong Keng Hua Typology ./ Educational institution Site ./ Tân Tây Province, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam A project in collaboration with CapitaLand Vietnam.

Tân Tây Kindergarten was designed by creating in-between spaces to foster an exploratory and exciting learning environment.

Classrooms and break out space were reimagined to house creative learning opportunities, giving the children a place to express themselves beyond classrooms. Pitched roof was used throughout the new kindergarten to blend in with the existing block on the right. Exposed brick and steel structure were used as the primary building material to ref lect the local construction aesthetic. The central play area features an open grass field with a mount to enhance the sensory experience of the children while playing in different landscape. Existing classroom blocks on the right were renovated by adding ramps to improve acccesiblity, and ventilation block to the toilets. The open space is then furnished with a retractable roof that is commonly used by the local to provide a gathering space for the local community.

The main play area at the open grass field features a gentle mount playscape that connects to the second floor of the kindergarten. There are seatings underneath existing trees to provide a shaded place for the parents to rest while waiting for their children.

Screen made of locally-produced breeze blocks are used to block the west sun from the open dining area and classroom. A library is built underneath the sculptural grand stairs so that the children can read and play in the sheltered space.

Visual connection is always maintained throughout the grass field play area, the open space on the ground floor and the classrooms on the second level. This allows the teachers to easily supervise the children from all direction to ensure their safety.

A transition space is created in between the new classroom block and the renovated lunchhouse with a void that allows skylight to illuminate the space and the corridor. The wooden deck flooring connects to the play area at the back so that the children can move easily between formal and informal learning space.

To activate the back space that is adjacent to a banana plantation and rice field, a playscape inspired by Vietnam train is designed to allow the children to explore the nature and to learn about farming. The trainscape also connects to the main play area in front of the kindergarten.

City of Rythmic Textures

In the light of the Batu Pahat High Speed Rail Station being proposed at Seri Gading which is 15km away from the existing town, we speculate that the distant location of station will leave the old town to an eventual death as the station becomes the new locus of economic development. In order to cohesively bridge the existing town to the new HSR settlement, we proposed to build a nature-trail by stitching the unique urban fabrics found along the periphery.

Instead of using the conventional mixed-development model, we counter-propose a trail that sustains the cultural and natural characteristics that are unique to the city and its people, connecting them by providing an alternative mode of movement that emphasizes on strenghtening local economy through architectural intervention.

Industrial workers can relax and unwind at the courtyard of the shelter while visitors can stop by for a quick snacks and toilet breaks.

An organic-shaped oasis for the factory workers to dine and unwind amidst of the rectilinear industrial boxes and the mundane everyday labour.

A spiral pavilion between the cemetery that houses a center stage for the annual Qing Ming cultural festival and also provides a seating shelter for the family while visiting their loved ones.

A wavy trail inspired by the landscape topography features a long spectator seating plan for the people to witness the golf events.

Inujima Eco-Trail

Typology ./ Integrated Eco-Trail for the Ageing Population Site ./ Inujima Island, Japan

Inujima is located about 2.5km south of Hoden in the southeastern part of Okayama Prefecture. Due to the closure of the refinery and the decline of the island’s quarrying industry, the current population amounts to 47 people with an average age of 75 years old, constituting an island seriously affected by depopulation and aging.The proposed EcoTrail is an integrated nature trail that houses a series of greenhouses, placed among the beautiful quarry landscape that is unique to the island. The quarry landscape is interpreted as a unique sculptural art that was born from artificial scarring of earth surface caused by stone quarrying in 1897. The six greenhouses are carefully positioned along the trail to enable people to view quarry from different vanishing points. Local and global researchers will work with local elderlys to experiment granite farming through soil remineralization. Throughout different seasons on the island, the local and the visitors get to experience the natural beauty of quarry.

The trail starts at the quarry as people are invited to explore the rocky stonescape while walking above the water. They can rest against the granite rocks while being immersed in the tranquility of the lush nature.

When they stop by the scuptural greenhouse, the local elderlys will experiment granite farming together with the visting agricultural experts to utilise the existing granite composition to enhance crops production on the island.

At night, visitors can star-gaze at the clear night sky that is unique to the island while immersing themselves in the mysterious quarry landscape.

Throughout the day, elderlys can take a walk along the trail for physical exercise and granite farming, while listening to the soft ocean waves lapping at the shores.

Located right in the heart of the biggest commercial hub in West region, Urban Terrace is a mixeddevelopment where you can find an eclectic mix of residential, commercial, retail and green space.

Situated next to the integrated transport hub of Jurong East MRT, residents will have seamless connection to various destinations. It is central to the green space and recreational parks such as Chinese Garden, Japanese Garden and Jurong Lake, connected by cycling route and park connector. It blurs the boundaries between live, work and play. The terrace is inspired by the natural landscape and it aims to create a seamless spatial experience whereby the staggering levels will create balcony and shading, outdoor shared space for the residents.

This museum mimics the spatial experience of walking in a canyon, each volume is carefully arranged to create a cascading gardens and to provide shades to the open spaces. The pathway in between the three blocks resembles the river that flows through the canyon, guiding the people through the exhibition. The terraces contains vertical greenery, connecting art to nature and people. The central courtyard makes an interesting meeting point for people to interact. When one looks up to the sky while standing at the courtyard, it is like catching a glimpse of the sky under the layers of rocks admist of the concrete jungle. Its white and monolithic exterior resembles a sculptural rock, gently shimmering under the sun, among the greenery.

Located at the vibrant shopping district in Orchard, The Palmate is an artificial design gallery that houses a gallery, a library, a lecture theatre and a cafe. Inspired by the large Angsana Tree at the road intersection, the interior structure resembled the palmation of tree branches. Each column grows out from the common point on each floor. The continuity of the columns from the basement to the top floor expresses the linearity and connectivity of each space. The levels are carefully arranged in a staggered manner to create double volume, open and closed space in alternating direction. A void is created to bring in daylighting into the basement.

The transparency and openness of space are to enable people to look through the building as an intrinsic part of the surrounding environment.

The Lantern

Typology ./ Shophouse Site ./ Bukit Pasoh Rd, Singapore

This project called for a design of gallery and performance space within a historic shophouse along Bukit Pasoh Road. To express the linearity of traditional shophouse, stairs and long ramp are looped around the length of the shophouse. People from both levels can have views of both levels at the same time. This formed an interesting zig-zag shaped floor in the long section. The opening on the right side of the wall is to frame the traditional architectural element of neighbouring shophouse. The texture of the facade is a hexagon made up of 3 identical diamond shapes where I have taken inspiration from the plant called “The Devil’s Backbone”. The arrangement of the shapes gave an illusion of box. The repetitive texture modules resembled the design of a traditional shophouse’s window frame.

Performative Metal Cladding

This project made use of the speed and precise positioning of the robot to rapidly mass-customize metal sheet to create 3D modules for a frameless facade. The robot will mark out the position on the metal sheet for rivet joinery and then bend the metal at specific angles. The elimination of die and cast, the implementation of a single action which facilitates folding at five different angles and the agglomeration of the folded modules can create a customised design with wide variations.

The customization manages daylighting, ventilation and views in tropical areas where external facade is required to filter sunlight but allow ventilation. The robotically-controlled system that has been an outcome of this research facilitates a rapid and accurate workflow realizing a complex system of producing metal sheet bends at different angles, giving structural properties to the 2D metal sheets. This metal-bending process removes traditional limitations in slow and rigid metal jig operations that typically utilizes large scale machineries and meets the need for variations rapidly in the realization of performative parametric designs. The prototyping considers material properties and constraints, load path optimization and performative simulation in order to achieve a digitally informed design.

One Million Lines

Inspired by the intrincate veins structure in leaf, I decided to explore on this natural form that is so light and delicate yet strong and airy at the same time. The veins system in leaf is known as leaf venation. Different types of leaves have their distinctive leaf venation which produce various patterns for their optimum biological function.

The type of leaf vein I have chosen is reticulate or net-veined leaf that has many branched minor veins from the main vein. It is distinctive among the dicotyledonous leaves.The vein structures function to distribute fluids and nutrients throughout the leaf. I reazlied that the vein structures shared similar visual properties as roots and tree branches. Therefore, I wanted to make something that represents the growth of knowledge that spreads across an individual’s mind from the root through the seemingly infinite branches. Hence, the advent of an ethereal bookmark that symbolizes the boundless world of knowledge.
