Clark Goolsby: Inspired by the Chaos Contemporary culture is saturated with millions of short-lived stimuli that fight to hold our attention — every day, we are inundated with thousands of messages that threaten to take over our focus. They’re catalogued and recontextualised, then cast back into the fray. Perhaps because of this constant reshuffling, there’s a general apathy about the origin of these information snippets: if an image or idea is only popular at this moment, delving into its history seems superfluous. Goolsby uses a variety of disparate elements within his work and places them without context as to how they were created or where they came from — much like using a Google image search and finding a picture disembodied from its original source. The artist then forms these references into a chaotic world of brightly colored shapes and patterns engaged in a delicate balancing act.


Designs on Display

The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York presents Studio Job MAD HOUSE. This will be the first solo museum exhibition in the US to explore the creative vision of design collaborators Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel, who established their atelier Studio Job in Belgium in 2000. For the exhibition, Studio Job will transform two of the Museum’s floors into an immersive design experience created expressly for MAD. The installation will include sculpture, lighting, furniture, floor coverings, wallpaper, drawings, and other objects designed over the past 16 years. Referencing the history of arts patronage, collecting, and display, the featured works will be presented as if in a collector’s home — organised according not to chronology, but rather to imagined narratives that fuse elements of history, fantasy, irony, and autobiography. The exhibition runs until August 21.

THE LEGEND: ZAHA HADID 1950-2016 The Goodbye With the death of Zaha Hadid, the world has lost a pioneer in the field of architecture. Also a gifted product designer, Hadid leaves a creative hole that might be impossible to fill.

Zaha Hadid died this March from a heart attack, shocking the design world. Famous for her love of the curve, the queen of architecture was famous for her futuristic styles and creative buildings. One of the finest architects the world has ever seen, Hadid’s work can be seen the world over. A driven, talented individual, Hadid was an inspiration to all in the creative fields and her work spans product design, architecture and design consultancy. Hailing from Baghdad, Hadid was born in 1950 and studied mathematics at Lebanon’s American University of Beirut before moving on to the Architectural Association in London. Hadid’s first major commission was the Vitra Fire Station in Weil Am Rhein, Germany, which she completed in 1993. Since then, this talented creative went on to work all over the world, designing iconic structures such as the MAXXI: Italian National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome, the London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Olympic Games and the Heydar Aliyev Centre in Baku all of which show her love of fluid space. In 2004, Hadid became the first woman to be awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize and the Arab architect twice won the UK’s most prestigious architecture award, the RIBA Stirling Prize: in 2010 for the MAXXI Museum in Rome, a building for the showcasing of 21st century art. Her fluid lines have attracted admirers the world over and represent nothing less than a pushing of the boundaries of architecture. With such achievements under her belt, one might assume that Hadid would stick to what she knew best, however that was never to be the case. Working with world-famous brands such as Versace, Sawaya & Moroni and more, Hadid designed everything from chandeliers to bags, jewellery to tables and chairs. Curves were of course present, but the myriad designs Hadid created are testament to a raw creative talent, one that could turn their hand to anything. It is rare that so much creative talent is contained within one individual and that it crossed so many boundaries, but Hadid was nothing if not extraordinary. An immensely creative force, she will be missed.

Paul Smith explains: “It’s a joy to work with Gufram. One of my favourite exhibitions of all time was ‘Italy: The New Domestic Landscape’ in 1972 in New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Included in the many wonderful things on display were products from Gufram. Since then my affection for the products has never waned over the years and so I was delighted to have been asked to collaborate on their famous Cactus.”

ABOVE IT ALL 1/JBR, Dubai In 2015, Dubai Properties unveiled its newest addition to the prestigious Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) waterfront address and they certainly saved the best to last. Met with much anticipation and excitement at Cityscape Global in Dubai, 1/JBR was displayed to the public for the very first time. Here we go behind the scenes and talk with the designers behind this flagship project – Martin Baerschmidt (MB) and Ivar Krasinski (IK), the founding Partners and Directors of Dubai-based architectural practice, E%(&. What is the current status of the design? IK: The building has become far more refined and subtle in its detailing since the original concept. We were selected over fierce international competition, our strength of design integrity gave us the edge, and our ethos is to consistently exceed expectations. As a team, we stand behind this high quality building, it’s not just another residential tower, it’s so much more. What makes this different from all the other residential towers in Dubai? IK: Several things, we have tall glass everywhere, 180 degrees of horizon, allowing uninterrupted views from all the apartments, offering vistas of the Palm and the Bluewaters Island from every single unit. We have private and semiprivate elevators and each apartment offers larger than usual sizes for each unit type, meaning they never feel tight. Add these elements together and it results in a very high end project. From a lifestyle standpoint, what makes 1/JBR so special in the Dubai skyline? IK: This is the kind of building where people who have high net worth can call their home, 1/JBR is for like-minded, international connoisseurs of taste and quality. Dubai leads many countries in style and design ethos and this will attract clients from across the globe, to either make their home or add to their property portfolio. MB: It’s been many years, since such a high end project reached the market especially in this location, a prime waterfront site, this is not only the jewel in the crown for the JBR community and skyline, but it will also add value to the area. What do you feel the key architectural design features are of 1/JBR? MB: I don’t think there is one specific design feature, instead the project is a very harmonious building, elegant in its simplicity. There are several features that set this project above and beyond others, for example, the bespoke statement canopy, this is not your normal metal clad, flat entrance canopy, this canopy vertically emphasises the height of the tower. IK: We designed the canopy as a metaphor for crashing waves on the beach – reflecting the rhythm of the Gulf. IK: The tower will be the first building you see when entering JBR – it’s the main feature and because of its height and location right on the water, it will stand out, it will be a visual icon.

MB: Its simplicity of a contemporary aesthetic lets the design breathe. You never feel cramped in any part of the building. Due to the elevator strategy, it’s totally unique in its catering to an owner, there is no common lobby, it has the privacy factor, from your car, to your elevator to your apartment door, that can’t be matched. the elevator strategy sets up a far more private experience for each apartment. IK: We love doing simple clean minimal design, that’s our aesthetic, we don’t want to do something over the top just for the sake of looking different. Do the interiors reflect the exterior of 1/JBR? IK: Yes, absolutely, they are subtle, understated and high quality. Materials are sourced from around the world, each room showcasing the best products and finishes from bathroom sanitary ware through to kitchen appliances. From the moment you walk into each apartment, you will be greeted with natural light – it hits every room, then coupled with how we’ve optimised sea views – it gives the homeowner tranquillity every day of the year. The interiors have a luxurious look and feel, complemented with a neutral palette, allowing them to be highly adaptable. Moreover, the interiors are another reflection in the timeless, elegant, simple and minimal architectural exterior. How does the design curate a luxury beach lifestyle? MB: It’s prime waterfront on pristine beaches, offering immediate private access. Then you have the ease of using the established lifestyle amenities with the JBR Walk and community. Residents will also have well-appointed health and fitness facilities for their private use, the pool, the deck, the gym – all accessible by the unique elevator set up. IK: It’s the quintessential beach building. Everything is about the view.

MB: From the moment you drive to 1/JBR by private road and entrance, you take your car to the basement and take your private or semi-private elevator to your apartment. If you or your guests arrive at the main entrance under the bespoke designer canopy, you will be greeted by the triple height lobby, offering a timeless first impression.

As we wrap up our interview, we discuss the uniqueness of this project and its clear to see why EDGE were chosen for this project, their experience, enthusiasm and approach to design – clearly shows through. MB: We look at this project as a custodianship. We take great responsibility to make it as good as the developer wants, designed for elite homeowners, through inspirational architecture, inspirational interiors and coming together to form an aspirational lifestyle. We are achieving this through a great team of international consultants working under us.

IK: This building has longevity – which means it’s a good investment and won’t date. It doesn’t fall into a specific current style. It’s not trendy, it’s timeless.

Flick the car into Sport mode (your other option is the economically-minded Green mode, and whichever you choose comes accompanied by matching mood lighting) and the eight-speed automatic transmission sharpens up its shifts, the throttle bites harder, the exhaust pops and burps, and the steering wheel tightens up bringing every nuance of the road below right up to your fingertips. In Sport, the Clubman Cooper S straight up gate-crashes the party and your inner child comes along for the ride too. However, MINI paid attention to areas not commonly associated with its cars as well, areas other than performance and entertainment. The new Clubman has grown by 32 cm in length freeing up both passenger and cargo room in the front and the back, and it’s 12 cm wider too. Yet, it’s a bit of an optical illusion - even in its elongated form the Clubman is still smaller than, say, a Volkswagen Golf. It’s still a MINI, in other words. The new instrument panel adopts the same generous surface areas of the exterior and the dash is a less cluttered and more intuitive design. More importantly, MINI also completely overhauled the car’s ingenious rear loading area (you can open the tailgate any one of three ways, hands-free at that too if your hands are full of groceries) and added a fifth door - the old car had an asymmetrical design with two doors on one side and just one on the other. Quick, communicative, fun, and in many ways also liberating, the new Clubman seems to have grown up alongside the MINI owners’ clique. But make no mistake, it hasn’t aged one bit.

Dervish was inspired by the famed whirling ritual dance and unites the three fundamental components of human nature: the mind, the heart and the body. These three elements are thoroughly joined both in theory and in practice as perhaps in no other ritual or system of thought. This image is transformed through the lamp itself, four different dimensions that illustrate the different phases of the dance. Made from brass, copper and wood, the lamp reďŹ&#x201A;ects the boldness of the body and the power of movement.



'WOODROCKS' Victoria Wagner USING RECLAIMED WOOD, VICTORIA WAGNER TURNS PIECES OF SECOND HAND, USED MATERIAL INTO ARTISTIC WONDERS THAT LOOK JUST LIKE MASSIVE GEMSTONES. The wood is painted to resemble chunks of precious stones and follows the natural shape of the wooden curves, mirroring its organic growth. “My eye generally and naturally tends toward tessellation and pattern, seeking a rhythm that mimics regular pulse. On the one hand, visual order provides a place for the senses to rest, while colour relationships create problems for the brain to solve. I like this simultaneity,” says Wagner. “There is something confusing to the senses in combinations that vacillate between interval and tone, allowing for optical engagement and a perceptual unpredictability.” Each ‘facet’ of the gem is cut from the wood to create natural, organic lines that suit the piece and through methodical painting and layer on layer of colour, the artist creates unique pieces that are sure to catch the eye.


'THE GLOW COLLECTION' Kim Markel DESIGNER KIM MARKEL’S STUNNING PIECES RESEMBLE FURNITURE STRAIGHT OUT OF A FANTASY WORLD. Made from reclaimed plastic from bottles, styrofoam, lunch trays and more, the pieces are bonded with resin and create a sense of whimsical magic. Markel’s work comes from the need to create but also the desire to do it in a responsible manner. Each piece is made by hand in her New York studio. Self-taught, the artist learned her trade via experimentation, more than a few failures and reflection. The Glow collection features a range of products, from a table, chair, vase and two mirrors, allowing those of looking for a little escapism to indulge in true, authentic green style. The pieces all have undeniable green credentials and you would be forgiven for forgetting that these funky designer objects are all the result of trawling for recyclable materials.

It seems like St Vincent and the Grenadines is flying under the radar in our part of the world, but with flights from London, planning an itinerary is not hard at all. The first flight takes you to Barbados, then a second short flight puts you on this unique – and still very exclusive – island. Located in the Caribbean Sea, St Vincent and the Grenadines is an island country among the Lesser Antilles that numbers about 125 smaller islands. From the ocean to the heights of a volcano, to crossing the colourful fields of a magnificent botanical garden, a trip to St Vincent and the Grenadines cannot disappoint. Overlooked by the imposing volcano La Soufrière, St Vincent is the larger of the two islands, and where the capital, Kingstown, is located. A few days on this big island, before moving on the tiny Grenadines, allows visitors to get in touch with the locals and learn about the culture, and many start with their most active days in order to relax later on.

ST VINCENT: THE ISLAND TOUR A quick tour of the Island takes only a day or two and requires a car. The roads are steep, narrow and fun to drive. Fort Charlotte, a fortification built at 600 feet above the sea level, presents a spectacular view over the ocean and the Grenadines. Inside the building, there are paintings by Lindsay Prescott and they explore the history of Saint Vincent. There are also some cannons left and looking down their barrels, you will enjoy beautiful views of the island and its capital. Getting to Fort Charlotte takes about 20 minutes from Kingstown on a scenic, steep road. Among the many natural landmarks of St Vincent is the Botanical Garden. The island has a lush vegetation of its own, but in this well-preserved garden you can find all the plants and animals typical of the country in the same area. The Botanical Garden of St Vincent was founded in 1765 by George Young, also the owner of Young Island, a private island with a resort off the coast of St Vincent, which he bought by trading it for a horse. The Botanical Garden is the biggest garden of this kind in the Western Hemisphere. In the garden, you will find trees from all over the world and about 20 kinds of orchid. The real highlights are the local plants and animals of Saint Vincent: the Cannonball Tree, with flowers that bloom at 6 AM and fall from the tree at 6 PM; the Amazona Guildingii, which is a very colourful parrot and is the national bird of St Vincent and the Grenadines; and the Breadfruit, which is a staple fruit of the island and tastes like a potato but grows on a tree. As the locals say: “Anything you can do with a potato, you can do with the breadfruit!” The Anglican church of Kingstown is the biggest church in the island. All around the building lies

a graveyard, while inside the church there are beautiful stained glass windows and a big chandelier. On national holidays, such as Easter, the church gets full and is a point of reference for the community of St Vincent. Even though you’re on an island in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, Dark View Waterfalls is a must. To reach this secluded spot, you can choose either an adventurous bamboo bridge or a safer timber one – the former being definitely more fun. The waterfalls are surrounded by beautiful vegetation, including the mimosa pudica, a particular plant that closes all its leaves when in contact with fire. The stream of water forms two little pools that allow for relaxing, idyllic swimming. Another highlight and an exciting place for a swim is Wallilabou Bay, where a scene from the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl,” the one that involves the coffins, was shot. The sand is black making the place look very wild, and the water is crystal clear. Visiting a house that was built for the movie is still possible. Inside, there are photos and descriptions of how it was built and how the scenes were shot.

VOLCANO LA SOUFRIÈRE: THE CLIMB On the Island of St Vincent, one of the biggest natural attractions is a volcano named La Soufrière – meaning the Sulfurer – which reaches 1,234 metres in altitude. From Kingstown, it takes about an hour on a scenic road to reach the base of the volcano, where the path starts. The beginning of the hike is not very hard, but the central part is more challenging because of very high steps made of bamboo that do not go easy on the quadriceps. Overall, it takes about 90 minutes to climb the volcano to the edge of the crater, and an hour to come back. On the way up, hikers cross water and dried lava streams, which makes the walk very interesting amid stunning scenery. Also, the vegetation is very tall at the beginning and provides shade, while it gets shorter towards the final part of the climb, where there is no clear path. It is important to have good walking shoes and socks, preferably together with long and comfortable trousers. The top of the volcano is windy and often foggy and the temperature drops, making the climb easier. This is not a hard hike for the fitter among us, but then again, it is ok to stop every now and then in order to rest and make it to the top at your own pace. It will be tough, but so worth it! Just by seeing the inside of the crater your efforts will be instantly rewarded. The crater is an immense green expanse with a lake and a hill in the middle. In the background, the blue of the Caribbean Sea frames the view, making it even more magical. Volcano La Soufrière is an active volcano, though the latest eruption was in 1979.

THE GRENADINES: THE LAID-BACK LIFE The island chain of the Grenadines includes the Bequia, Canouan, and Tobago Cays. Bequia is the largest island and it is located at about an hour by ferry from St Vincent. There are also fast ferries that take only around 15 minutes. The atmosphere on this wild island is very relaxed, laid back and authentic. Even if the roads are narrow, it is fun to ride a “pick-up truck” taxi going through all the landmarks on the island, including Friendship Bay and Mount Pleasant. Such names can only make you smile! The island tour includes a visit to Mount Pleasant to enjoy the incredible views of the island, the Sargeant Brothers Model Boat Shop for model boats of any kind, and the Bequia Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary, where Mr. King breeds sea turtles and saves them from poachers, releasing them into the ocean once they’re big enough to be self-sufficient and escape danger. An hour away from Bequia is the small island of Canouan. This is a real oasis of peace and tranquillity. The beaches are great, and the coral reef offers some fantastic diving and snorkelling just a few metres from the shore. For the best views, the terrace at the casino offers a panoramic scene of the island and the ocean. The Tobago Cays are Petit Rameau, Petit Bateau, Baradol, Petit Tobac and Jamesby – these five tiny islands to the south of the Grenadines are surrounded by a coral reef and other small islands, such as Palm Island, Morpion, and Petit Saint Vincent. This small archipelago is protected by the coral reef, and it is possible to get off the boat in shallow waters and swim to the pristine sandy beaches of these beautiful, uninhabited islands. In the Tobago Cays Marine Park, the main activities are diving, sailing, fishing and snorkelling with sea turtles. On the glamorous side, an honourable mention goes to Petit Saint Vincent – a private island of 115 acres, recently turned into a resort for high end travellers who will be able to take advantage of this exclusive setting. I grew up at home where my mother and grandmother did all the cooking and I was always eager to help out. When I was 16 my parents brought me to a three-star Michelin restaurant and that meal changed my life. Each dish renewed my passion for food and changed the way I looked at dining. What inspired you to open your restaurant in Dubai? I’ve always been interested in the UAE and have followed the continuous growth of Dubai. For me, opening a restaurant is always about the right location, team and partnership. I was introduced to Khaled al Mheiri by a mutual friend who presented me with this opportunity. All the elements that are important to me were aligned so I decided to open JG Dubai with him. Describe how did you create the menu for the restaurant? When creating a menu for a specific restaurant, I research local ingredients, flavours, influences, climate and clientele. The menus in Dubai are influenced by my flagship restaurant Jean-Georges and its sister restaurant Nougatine. Then as we cater to the guests ’tastes, the restaurant and the menu take on a local life of their own. Describe your typical day. I meet with the members of my team, front and back of house, to get a pulse of what’s going on. When we come, we always teach new techniques

and recipes. Then I like to observe the lunch and dinner service, meet and greet the guests and get feedback. I usually have lunch and dinner in the restaurant at the end of service so that I can experience the food and service as a guest, or take the team out for dinner to experience the Dubai dining scene. Does Middle Eastern culture somehow influence your cooking? What Middle Eastern spices have impassioned you? I gain inspiration through travel. The local flavours and spices, like sumac or zaatar, are inspirational. How do recipes come to you? It’s really all about using the very best and freshest, seasonal fruits, vegetables and proteins. I then find the best flavour combinations that highlight those ingredients in a way that elevates each component of the dish. What are some of your proudest creations? That’s very hard. I guess the ones that please people the most. How do you feel when you see people enjoying your food? As a chef, observing people enjoy your food is one of the greatest feelings and accomplishments. I love the energy in the room when every table is filled and the bustle of the kitchen, servers and guests creates a show, similar to a ballet. Describe that moment when you won your first Michelin award. What was your reaction? What did you eat to celebrate that night? Wow, and now the bar is set high and it is something that I will have to work to maintain in years to come. Champagne, of course, with my team and celebrating by dancing on top of the bar. What are the qualities required to succeed in your line of work? Hard work, attention to detail, determination and the willingness to continue learning.
