A word from Sean Strauss

One year ago, I was still at The Biggest Loser Resort in Malibu, making changes to my life that has completely changed the way I live. This is a time when families, friends and our furry friends come together to give thanks to one another. After a long time of not being Thankful for anything, this list is going to take up some serious page real-estate. Here is what I am thankful for: My parents, even though they drive me completely nuts, I don’t think it is possible to be loved as much by two people.

My brother, Michael and best friends, Nick and Liam who help keep me in check.

It isn’t KFC with its much-talked-about Double Down, or Burger King with its Triple Whopper, and it isn’t even TGIF with its heavily loaded nachos. The most unhealthy restaurant chain dish in America is brought to you by the Cheesecake Factory.

But there are other surprise winners. At California Pizza Kitchen, the innocuous sounding Pesto Cream Penne is worth 1,350 calories and a whopping 1,920 mg of sodium — almost as much salt as you’d eat in an entire day. The Tostada Pizza, which sounds even healthier with its strips of lettuce, fresh tomato salsa and black beans, racks up an unbelievable 1,680 calories and 3,300 mg of sodium.

What’s most striking about the Xtreme Eating Awards is not the calorie count itself Most of us wouldn’t touch a Quarter Pounder with a 10-footlong fork, but wouldn’t think much of eating P.F. Chang’s Pan Fried Noodles instead (incidentally, 1,820 calories).

EARN FINANCIAL REWARDS FOR TAKING STEPS TO MANAGE DIABETES With nearly 347 million people affected by diabetes worldwide and nearly 10% of all Delaware residents, now is a good time to talk about diabetes and the importance of a healthy diet, exercise and preventive steps to avoid complications from the disease.

Enjoy Lower Carbon Holidays

G

ifting, feasting, writing cards, visiting, attending holiday concerts and pageants are a welcome distraction to the reality that winter is settling in.

Escaping the cold and drear is one reason this gets to be such a frenetic season, despite our best efforts to celebrate at a more relaxed and nurturing pace. Meanwhile, whatever your holiday schedule, there are many many opportunities to do everything more greenly. The suggestions that follow don’t add any expense or take extra time, but do contribute greatly to the health of our earth, our individual bodies, and our Spirits.

Eat Less Since food is involved in every aspect of holiday celebrations, a simple way to significantly reduce your carbon footprint is to reduce the amount you eat. Eating less saves on CO2 emissions as long as the leftovers are eaten later and not tossed away with the scandalous 30% food waste I’ve commented on in earlier columns. Waste is especially costly because it represents CO2e unnecessarily incurred.

Mindful eating always reduces quantity ingested. Chewing, chewing, chewing improves digestion, too. Drinking copious amounts of water doesn’t dilute digestive juices, and clears the palate to enjoy each taste. Stay active as host or helper to use your hands for something other than putting food into your mouth. Don’t deny yourself treats, just fill up on veggies and fruits before eating the decadent morsels.

Make conversation and company even more interesting than food.

When feeling the lure of compulsion, breathe slowly and deeply synchronizing a mental narration, “I am now breathing in….I am now breathing out.” You will be amazed how managable your eating becomes.

Eat More Produce Eating less meat especially reduces carbon emissions. Beef, poultry, pork, lamb come mostly from factory farming to quickly fatten animals for food. I align with Living Well reader Bonnie McKuen, who wants to remind everyone that this industrial

approach to growing animals into entrees as fast as possible is one of the biggest sources of CO2 pollution. And it is horribly cruel. If your family isn’t ready to trade its traditional holiday menu for vegetarian fare, you can buy local farm raised meat which is healthier for your body and our ecosystem. Add more veggie and fruit choices to your menu. Aspire to eat 10% less meat this holiday season, and maintain that reduction throughout the year. Any healthy body can comfortably eat 10% less.

Low, Lower, Lowest Selecting holiday gifts can be based on low, lower, and lowest carbon footprints. Choose items that have been hand made, rather than manufactured. Are the raw materials from sustainable sources? Are the artisans paid a living wage and provided a safe, decent work place.

Reuse, Reinvent, Rejuvenate All the CO2 emissions related to packaging for holiday gifts can certainly be lowered by recycling instead of trashing. Boxes, giftwrap, tissue, ribbon should be recycled with reuse. I received a box of luscious ripe fruit from the tropics. A square of tissue nestled each one in its cubby. I placed those tissues, bowl-shaped from doing their jobs, one on top of another, rotating each tissue slightly so that the corners overall looked like ruffly flower petals. About two-thirds were white. The rest were green. Put a refrigerator magnet right on its center. Fluffed it up. Opening and closing the door I see a beautiful flower reminiscent of ripe fruit. What can you create by reinventing or rejuvenating gift packaging?

Rethink Long Distance It’s a pity air freight not only generates huge amounts of CO2e, its altitude greatly increases ozone degradation. I would have just as enthusiastically enjoyed a local stalk of Brussels sprouts tied with twine onto a split fire log. I am slowly educating my longdistance gifters to keep it simple and send it on a boat. I handcraft personal greeting cards for those far away. My art and materials are primitive—no scrapbooking polish—but my messages are personal and heartfelt, causing the receivers to glow with delight and lightening the planetary load of CO2e.

They are able to sell surplus eggs, wool or milk to pay for shelter, education, and medicine. Then they are required to “Pass on the Gift” of livestock, plants and training to other local families in need.

And once a well is done producing, it can be sealed up, sequestering the CO2 underground where it can’t add to global warming.

ydraulic fracturing (known as “fracking”) is a method of causing fissures in underground shale rock formations to facilitate the extraction of otherwise inaccessible natural gas and oil. In a typical fracking operation, drillers inject a mixture of pressurized water and chemicals underground to fracture the rock and free up the gas and oil. Not widely employed in the U.S. until less than a decade ago, fracking has quickly become a major player in the U.S. energy scene. The resulting influx of cheap domestic natural gas—cleaner burning than the oil and coal it has replaced—is at least partly responsible for the fact that the U.S. has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions to the lowest levels since 1992.

Fracking has been good for oil companies, the economy and even our carbon footprint, but it doesn’t come without environmental cost. A typical fracking operation pumps some five million gallons of water and chemicals underground to break up the shale. About half the water is removed during the oil and gas recovery process, leaving the other half underground where it can contaminate aquifers and degrade soils.

Researchers at the University of Virginia estimate that fracked sections of the Marcellus shale in the eastern U.S. could store over half of all U.S. CO2 emissions from power plants and other stationary sources over the next 20 years, with other shale formations providing significant additional storage.

Right now CO2-based fracking is uncommon, given the abundance of water in our biggest fracking regions and the logistical challenges in transporting a compressible gas to well sites safely and cheaply. But as fracking expands into politically charged areas, or arid regions where water is scarce, waterless fracking could become more common. Already, nearly half of the fracked wells drilled across the U.S. in 2011-2012 are in waterstressed areas, according to the sustainability-oriented non-profit, CERES. And a recent study from the consulting firm Wood Mackenzie concluded that many of the countries with the greatest promise for developing shale oil and gas through fracking suffer from water shortages.

Bullis says that one of the largest shale gas resources in the world is in China underneath 115,000 square miles of desert. “Piping in water would strain already tight supplies,” he says, but adds that China’s major use of coal-fired power plants means the country has plenty of CO2 it could be capturing and using.

We have two recently rescued young adult cats, Milo and Caesar. This is our first holiday with them. What precautions can I take to keep them safe? We live in a small apartment .

A:

Cats are by nature very curious creatures, so the holidays can be exciting, stimulating and sometimes a bit scary. Any change in a cat’s environment can be often stressful.

Holidays are particularly bad because of frequent visitors to the home, changes in the environment such as decorations or any other modification to the pet’s surroundings. As such, it is necessary to help keep our furry friends safe and healthy during these seasonal changes.

Decorations seem to pose a potential problem to all felines if the proper precautions are not met. Any ribbon, tinsel or string can cause partial or complete intestinal obstruction if ingested. If you see a piece of string hanging out of your cat’s mouth DO NOT try to pull it out. This situation is a medical/surgical emergency and you should get to your veterinarian immediately. Holiday ornaments and their hooks can also pose a serious risk to your pet. If ingested these can cut the inside of the mouth, injure the stomach and digestive tract and can cause perforation in the intestines. Once again, this is an emergency situation and you should get to the veterinarian immediately. Candles, around for the holidays or just around your apartment, can cause burns or even fire in your abode. Cats can jump and bump into or knock over a candle without much effort. You must be aware of where and what your pets are doing during these higher stressed times to help avoid potential harm to your companion.

There are a number of different plants, both ornamental and otherwise, that can cause trouble for your pets. One of the more common plants seen during the winter holidays is the Poinsettia.

The Poinsettia contains a latex-like sap that can cause irritation to the mouth and oral cavity and can result in vomiting and diarrhea if ingested. Mistletoe berries are very toxic and can cause very severe symptoms ranging from cardiac problems, heavy breathing and excessive urination to seizures. Frequently, if ingested, these berries will cause gastrointestinal disturbances such as excessive salivation, vomiting and diarrhea. Oftentimes mistletoe will cause a lowering of blood pressure. The American Holly plant has berries that are also a problem for pets. Ingested Holly berries can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Most holidays bring with them an abundance of cakes, cookies and chocolates. Good food and fun for all. Well, maybe not for your pet. There are a number of human foods that can be toxic or harmful to your pet whether it is a holiday season or not. These foods should be avoided at all costs as they can be potentially fatal to your companion animal. Chocolate, for example, is the number one toxic food that pets ingest. It contains a substance that affects your pet on a cellular level, causing vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness and changes in their red blood cells. Left untreated, it can be very detrimental. If you suspect that your pet ingested chocolate, I would advise calling your veterinarian immediately and have them examined. Holiday fruitcakes can also be a problem because of the high amount of sugar product in them, as well as, the alcohol content. Avoid these products at all costs. Gastrointestinal problems can be paramount in these situations. Other important ingredients that need to be avoided include grapes and raisins. They have been associated with kidney issues and kidney failure in pets. Once again, avoid these substances at all costs. Avoid onions, chives and leeks as these can cause destruction of the red blood cells, especially in cats, along with gastrointestinal problems, lethargy and anemia.

Additionally, avoid giving your pet ham or turkey skin as this can cause pancreatitis, vomiting and diarrhea. Any questionable ingestion of any of the aforementioned substances should justify a visit to the veterinarian as soon as the problem is identified.

Be fully armed and dressed for battle if Christmas presents bear this phrase...

“Assembles in Minutes” When I was growing up and my mother would announce that she would have to call someone to fix or assemble something, my father would respond with the typical male growl, “I can do it.”

This always translated into: “First, I’m going out to spend a lot of money on tools that I’m only going to use once.” Hours later, he would return from the store hauling in the hardware to do the job right.

I could never hang around to watch how my father did things because the scene usually became dramatic rather quickly, sending everyone into hiding. Minutes into any project, my father would begin to sweat, swearing about the directions, the product, or that his purchase was missing parts. Sometimes his endeavors involved another trip to the hardware store. Sometimes something else got broken. Sometimes his efforts involved bandages. Once, they required a trip to the hospital and stitches. They always involved more time than he had allotted to do the task, which only added to the sweat and the swearing. Somehow, the job got done right, and he had yet more tools to add to his growing collection.

When my father passed away, I kept the toolboxes and tools I thought I might need to maintain my own home. Designing and working in theatres had taught me how to use tools and assemble things; I considered myself somewhat handy.

began assembling the unit. I noted that some of the pieces should be placed with the arrow facing up. Reading glasses, a magnifying glass, a halogen lamp, and a flashlight failed to reveal any arrows; I resorted to common sense.

Now assembled, the unit failed to move gracefully from the bedroom to the bathroom. It really depended on that spring tension to keep it together, and without it would insist on falling apart, loudly scattering in different directions. After the third attempt and the third failure, my patience vanished.

Swearing and sweating, I tried a new approach and carried the unit into the bathroom like a javelin. Moments away from success, I placed the unit into the tub, and shoved the spring-loaded tube against the ceiling. The unit was too long. I dragged it away from the ceiling; it fell apart into four segments, clattering loudly in the tub. Small print disclosed that should the unit not fit, cutting of the small inner tubing would be involved. Searching through my father’s toolbox, I found a measuring tape, hacksaw and vice grips.

The cut was successful. A return trip to the bathroom, however, revealed that a vintage city home and its bathtub do not have to conform to any specifications given on the box. The outer metal tube was too long. More cutting of different gauge metal would be required. I needed a different blade. I yanked out the shelving again; it fell apart noisily.

Returning from the hardware store with another saw, I looked again at the elegant picture on the box. There was no hint of the frustration and torture involved in assembling these shelves whose ultimate function was to hold fragrant shampoos and puffy body scrubbers. The claims “easy to assemble” and “in no time at all” had become pronouncements of doom, right up there with “this won’t hurt” and “what could possibly go wrong.”

Many hours, two different saws, a broken flowerpot and band aid later, my spring-loaded pole unit with its four shelves was snuggled perfectly into the corner of the bathtub. I arranged my shampoos and body scrubbers, pleased that the results were finally what I had wanted. But more importantly, I had returned stuff, broken something, hurt myself, and bought tools. My father would have been proud.

One Christmas, I decided that as a gift to myself I would simplify my bathroom. I was sure a set of those spring-loaded, corner shelves in the bathtub would be the perfect solution for dealing with cleanliness. My toiletries would be elevated in one corner and not scattered around the surface of the tub. And it would assemble in minutes. Every box of those shelves said so.

I understood that what we focus on we will get more of that in our life. That is a universal law, but I also understand the nature of life and that the holiday season brings many people sadness and difficult moments. The last thing you feel like doing is going around trying to “think and speak positive” all the time. Look, if you are driving down the highway and you get a flat tire saying out loud, “I have no flat, I have no flat” won’t help you one bit. Let’s pull off of the side of the road and fix it so you can get where you want to go!!

So, what do you do this Holiday Season if you feel beaten up and beaten down?

Step 1 - Get Out Of The Past One of the major reasons why people get stuck in life is because something happened in the past that they keep replaying in their head over and over again. As the famous Vince Gill song states - There is no future in the past. The challenge with the past is that we cannot change it. What is done is done; but we can alter our meaning of it. That means, we can begin to understand that everything in the past has helped make you who you are today.

We may not like the lessons from the past and yes they can hurt but they have helped make you who you are today. The past has brought you strengths and resources. All we have is NOW. We must not live in the past or future because when we do, we do so at the cost of living in the the only thing we really have .. the present… now!

We must remember that. We must remember who we are at the depth of our soul. Your past does not equal what your future can be. You have the ability to make a new choice or decision that changes your life right now. What you did one day ago, a week ago, a year ago does not determine what you can do right now.

Step 3 - Get Out Of You The interesting thing about depression is that when people are depressed they tend to focus on only one person, themselves and one thing: what is not right in their life. I understand how challenging the holiday season can be; I have been there myself.

No matter how dark it feels, you must change your pattern. If you don’t, it won’t change. One of the things that I discovered during my darkest times is that if I helped others, I forgot about myself.

I forgot about the past and missed expectations. When we stop making it all about ourselves and we start making it about others we feel a lot better. A simple but powerful tool that can change your life.

Your life and your happiness is your responsibility. It is in this moment that things will begin to shift. Remember that nothing last forever, not even sadness. That after every winter there comes a spring. You just want to make sure that you don’t shut down and miss the spring.

Q:

I had a baby 3 months ago and my arms are sore from picking him up, that I am concerned about safety. Will exercises help? How about with my “new baby tummy?”

A:

You really should not be sore from picking up your three month old. I would be concerned about your neck posture and would venture to guess you have had neck pain and stiffness in the past. A full spinal and upper extremity exam including rib cage and craniosacral alignment is in order. If you have a tightness of your psoas muscles that line the front of your spine, your rib cage will be pulled forward and your head will be too far in front of you. In order to see properly you will rock your head back on this forward alignment which can create a crushing type pressure on some very important nerves below the base of the skull. If the muscles are too tight you can only fake it for a little while. Gravity will win and collapse you will. It could also be very possible that you misplaced a few ribs during the birthing process. Weakness and tingling in the arms can be a result of rib dysfunction. Once proper alignment is established the pelvic floor muscles which support the uterus, low back, intestines and by where many nerves, blood and lymph channels flow would be top priority in supporting your spine from the ground up. Next, the back muscles followed by arm muscles because the truth is as follows; You could have arms like Popeye’s and if your core is weak they will fail you.

You can have a strong core and not so strong of arms and be more effective in lifting without stressing the spine. Thus, the belly and the arms get taken care of in the same process as all is related and contributing as a team. The arm bone is connected to the shoulder bone, the shoulder bone is connected to the rib cage, the rib cage is connected to the pelvis and on and on...

Q:

Recently I lost a great amount of weight and I feel better, in most areas. I’m finding “new” muscles that need help holding my frame in this new way. Is there a routine I can do that would help strengthen my muscles and core, for better posture? Is there anything I can do to tighten the extra skin?

A:

Congratulation! Your joints get great relief with weight loss. Prescribing an exercise routine after that kind of a shift is very personalized. Your body not only has a new center of gravity, the length and strength of your muscles and fascia have been distorted and are finding their way back home. There is process by which long, weak muscles are identified and using neuromuscular facilitation restoration of the feedback system in conjunction with the brain can be aroused and stimulated. Tight, short muscles must be lengthened and and then retrained. This occurs individually for the muscles and then as a group and finally in synchronicity with the entire postural mechanism. One area that becomes vulnerable and may need special attention with extreme weight loss is the lumbar spine. The lumbosacral fascia is very tight with additional weight and it actually adds support. Weight loss can decrease the stability because of the loss of tauntness and slack in the fascia can make the spinal joints vulnerable. What you eat, will affect your skin more than anything as well as massage that stimulates lymph and elasticity. Vibratory exercise equipment can also be helpful in overall toning. The retraining and stretching of your muscles will allow you to have great improvements in your posture. Without that piece it can be a very tiring battle between tight and weak musculature.

Just remember, you will want to find a moment when you can grab some alone time, as you will probably want to give these gifts in private. Enjoy!

The Classics Cologne, neckties, and silk boxer shorts are what I consider to be “the classics” in gift giving for men. I have some suggestions that may help you make these gifts much, much sexier! Let’s start with cologne. In many cases, women will buy their partner a new bottle of the cologne he already wears. That’s nice…but we’re not going for nice, are we? The idea is to find a new scent for him— one that you find intoxicating. Now, as you may know, perfumes and colognes smell different when worn on people versus in the bottle, due to how it mixes with the person’s individual body chemistry. For this reason, it can be really hard to find a scent you like on him, when shopping in a store. What I’ve found to be an easier, and more accurate option is to purchase several men’s magazines (e.g. Men’s Health; GQ; Men’s Journal, etc.). Go through the magazines and find the pages with cologne samples.

When you find one that you love, tear out the page. Second best to smelling it on him, is smelling it on something that smells just like him. I suggest taking a shirt he’s worn out of his laundry basket; give it a sniff test to see if it already has his cologne on it. If not, take the cologne sample from the magazine and rub it on the shirt in areas he normally would sweat (Not my favorite part… but remember that body chemistry thing we just talked about?).

Your best chances of getting a good idea of how it might smell on him would be to let it settle in and really mix with his scent. Try putting it into a plastic zip lock bag for a short period of time.

Then, when it has nicely mixed with his scent, smell the shirt. If it makes you want to jump his bones, you’ve found a winner. The trick here is to find a shirt he won’t miss to use for this experiment, as you’ll want to wash it before getting it back to him. It may seem like a lot of work, but smell is one of our most powerful senses and if the payoff is having a man who smells absolutely irresistible to you; it’s well worth the effort.

Oh, the necktie! I think just about every man in America has received a necktie as a gift at some point. When it comes to neckties, there are a couple of ways to make it a sexy gift. The first, and I think most obvious, is to buy one you think he’d love, put it on, and wait for him in the bedroom wearing nothing else but the necktie…and maybe some sexy shoes. The second option is to buy him two solid black silk neckties. It may take him a moment to figure out why you’ve bought him two identical solid black silk neckties, but when he does, he’ll realize that his neck is the last place they’re going to end up! For my kinkier friends out there, I suggest the necktie sold by Incoqnito (See Figure 1). “A sexy neck

Finally, we have silk boxer shorts. While some men like the look and feel of silk boxers, I hear a lot of feedback that they’re not practical as actual underwear. Here are some examples of what I hear from men about silk boxer shorts: “They aren’t comfortable throughout the day because they stick to your skin and ride up on you.” “They feel great, but I get sweaty in them because the material doesn’t let air in.” And my favorite, “They feel nice, but don’t have any support, if ya know what I mean.” Thus I suggest a sexy spin on this old favorite: silk boxer briefs. There are a lot of variations out there and several companies are making them. One of the more popular options is made by Magic Silk (See Figure 2). It’s got the sexy feel of silk, although it’s made from a more breathable blend material, and gives the support of a boxer brief.

Toys The most popular adult toy for men is the erection ring. They come in all shapes and sizes, vibrating and non-vibrating, and range from stretchy rubber to steel. They are worn just around the base of the penis and helps to restrict the blood flow out of the

The Generous Heart of Desire In a recent conversation with a new acquaintance, she revealed to me that she didn’t really think life is about manifesting what we desire. I don’t recall her specific words, but what she said reminded me of a perspective I’ve encountered again and again as I do my work supporting people in – yes - manifesting what they desire.

There are beliefs, entrenched in mass consciousness, that life is serious business. Manifesting desires is seen as frivolous or downright selfish. Many people, depending on whether they consider themselves “realistic” or “spiritual,” think that our purpose in life is to work hard or learn lessons.

I used to think that way…until I realized that in doing so, I was living a life of hard work and learning lessons.

I wasn’t all that fun to be around. And when I decided to be completely honest with myself, I finally acknowledged that I wanted a radically different kind of life. I wanted to experience joy, fulfillment, happiness, satisfaction - and, yes, recurring good hair days.

So I gave myself permission to want what I really wanted.

And what I’ve come to understand is that our wants and desires are neither frivolous nor selfish. They’re actually evolutionary impulses, calling us forward into new avenues of growth, creativity and self-expression.

I know, it’s not always easy to see them that way - especially other people’s desires. Often they appear to be selfish, extravagant or even wasteful in our eyes – so much so, that desire itself has gotten a bad rap.

But the thing is, our desires mature and evolve as we do. And we can’t experience the ongoing expansion of our creativity if we squelch desire from the get-go. Instead, we benefit greatly from learning to nurture our desires, to acknowledge them and appreciate them and let them lead us into new experiences.

As we mature, we learn to distinguish desires that arise from wanting to prove or protect ourselves from those that arise from wanting to express ourselves, and we recognize that the latter are more fulfilling. But if we label all desires as frivolous or selfish, we never reach that point of evolution. We cut ourselves off from realizing our greatest self-expression - and it is through our genuine, joy-filled self-expression that we are of most service to others.

In other words, honoring our desires is not selfish, it is selfrespecting and inherently generous.

I see our genuine desires as the inner compass leading us to our deepest fulfillment. And so from that standpoint, I might even say that manifesting our desires is why we’re here.

I’m not saying that life is about accumulating lots of stuff, although I’m not judging that, either. I mean that, in the quiet heart of our hearts, most of us desire experiences such as being respected, feeling appreciated, making a difference, expressing our creativity, having fun, creating beauty, helping others...you get the idea. Our desires form the core of our intentions, which give purpose and direction to our lives.

So I say it’s high time we stop judging our desires and begin celebrating them instead.

We may not manifest every desire we have, but the process of honoring them opens us to our inherent joy and creativity.

And isn’t that what life is all about?

New Year Resolution for 2014: Drink your way to a THINNER waist!

Planning on a New Year’s Eve resolution to lose unwanted pounds? If you want to have lasting success, here are two recipes to try. (hint: only one works.)

RECIPE #1: Puree massive quantities of low-fiber, highly saturated fats and trans-fats with highly processed, sugary foods. Mix in gallons of nutrient-leeching carbonated beverages.

Add very LIMITED fruits and vegetables! Shake, stir and WAIT! The transformation WILL take place. The process involves complicated and intricate biochemical reactions and rapid cellular change. WHAT is the secret result of this naturebending, mad-food-scientist experiment? The answer is: The Average American Girth!

WHAT!?! How can the same people who brought such advancements as the moon landing, automobile, light bulb, free speech, democracy and computers deliver such a grossly destructive and flawed product? Technically, no human should consume such a diet without the direct supervision of a trained health professional. We are literally killing ourselves by the food choices that we unconsciously make or are taught to make from commercial interests. Changing the American dietary culture is a multifaceted and time-consuming task. Perhaps the easiest FIRST STEP to dramatically improve the quality of nutrient intake is via the SMOOTHIE (maybe even another American innovation?).

When creating a great smoothie, I personally use a processor called a Vita-Mix (I have a Vita-Mix 3600 Plus- found on Ebay used for about $150). It pulverizes the fruits, veggies, nuts and other ingredients. A powerful blender may work as well. Cheap blenders don’t last and create a “semi-chunky” drink instead of a delicious SMOOTHIE. Always use ORGANIC ingredients when possible. Due to the fruits used, consume at breakfast time when carbohydrates (sugars) are the most beneficial. Enjoy a SMOOTHIE at least three mornings per week. Skip one every four days if you are planning to drink more. Portions may be adjusted and ingredients may be removed or substituted based on individual tastes and needs.

RECIPE #2 = Dr. Rosenthal’s Mega Mix (produces about 16-20 ounces):

1. One apple, pear or orange and ½ to 1 cup of berries.

Frozen berries work well and may contain more antioxidants than fresh berries (typically the riper, more antioxidant-rich berries are used for freezing). Blueberries are a great choice and help change the color of the smoothie to purple instead of the hard-to-drink-in-the-morning GREEN! Core the apple or pear, but leave the skin on. The outer most peel is removed from the orange leaving the nutritionally rich fleshy-white covering intact. Seeds are discarded. Receive all of the great benefits of fruit with the fiber intact (one advantage of a smoothie over juice). Try to avoid or use sparingly the sweeter fruits such as mangos, bananas, etc.

Add about ¼ cup of organic raw nuts and/or seeds. I use chia, hemp or ground flax seeds or a mixture containing two.

Raw walnuts are also a welcomed addition in the mix. Walnuts are relatively high in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fat that helps prevent abnormal heart rhythms and has been shown to cut the risk of sudden cardiac death among people who have already suffered a heart attack.1 Walnuts also help to keep your stomach feeling full until lunch. This step may be omitted if greater weight loss is desired. Instead, eat ¼ cup of raw walnuts or almonds as a mid-morning or afternoon snack.

5. Toss in your favorite greens. I use whatever I have available. It may be kale, baby spinach or a salad mix of various lettuces. My rule is to add as much green food as possible without making the smoothie taste like a salad. If proportioned just right, it should taste delicious and fruity! About 1-2 cups of packed greens works well. This step loads the smoothie with the greatly needed vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals (plant nutrients) and enzymes. Phytochemicals are thought to help with the prevention or treatment of at least four of the leading causes of disease-related death in the United States.3 Note: Purified water is added to a desired consistency.

Remember, avoid fruit juices and the added sugar they bring.

A smoothie contains calories and healthful carbohydrates and is best used alone as your breakfast. It can be used to replace other meals, but your higher carbohydrate-containing foods should not be consumed later in the day or evening to optimize weight management.

America, START YOUR BLENDERS! Your health will improve, your scale will be happier and your energy levels will surge. Let’s begin today and drink our way back to better health and a thinner waist… cheers!

3. Add about 1 tbs. organic, cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil or ½ cup of organic raw coconut or coconut chips.

Coconut contains the fatty acid called lauric acid. Natural coconut fat in the diet may help to maintain normal body lipids (lipids store energy and form parts of cell structures), thereby protecting the liver and improving the immune system’s natural anti-inflammatory response.2 4. Add a scoop of premium protein powder containing about 15-20 grams of protein. I prefer undenatured whey with its benefits ranging from immune enhancement and increased antioxidant activity to boosted energy levels and weight loss. I carry a few of my favorites in the office or you can find protein powders in most health food stores. In order to preserve the integrity of the whey protein, the scoop is to be added to the pre-blended smoothie and quickly blended in just until it is no longer visible. I toss it in at the end, and then run the Vita-Mix for a few seconds. If you want to use a vegetable-based protein, I recommend those containing rice and pea protein or hemp. Try to avoid soy.

Because I live on a teacher’s salary I often buy shoes that can be used with many different outfits and that can be considered fashionable for a few years instead of the latest fad which dies out the minute you get your hands on them. Vanity, comfort or both?

Comfort is always desirable when it comes to the clothes you wear, but unfortunately you can’t always get what you want.

I have many times tried on a dress for a special occasion and thought, “How am I ever gonna wear this for 4+ hours?” but end up buying it anyway because “it’s just sooo cute!”; and then suffer through the event because the pictures are turning out wonderful and the compliments on my outfit are totally worth it.



Is your wardrobe based on current fashion trends? Are you comfortable sporting your own style, regardless of what is “in style” at the time?

In spite of the latest fashion trends in the media that are constantly flung in my face, I stick to my fashion gut and go with what “speaks” to me. I dress to impress myself first and foremost.

I wear what I like and what expresses me, if it happens to be something that makes other people say “oooh I love your top!” ...then great. Your personal fashion may not be everyone’s “cup of tea”, but as long as I look in the mirror and feel like myself and happy then I don’t care what others think.



What is the one piece of clothing or accessory from your wardrobe that you could not live without?

Megan Horstead

Megan Horstead is 24 years old and lives in Newark, Delaware.

Megan is a graduate of the University of Delaware with a degree in Early Childhood Education and is currently employed as a Preschool Teacher for an Early Head Start center in Wilmington. She enjoys balancing out her demanding day-job with fitness classes like kickboxing, and having a few laughs and drinks with friends.



How would you define your own sense of style, and how does it exemplifies your personality?

My sense of style is very versatile. I like many different styles of fashion and use them to accentuate my existing wardrobe for any occasion. During the week, I opt for function over the highest fashion. Caring for and teaching young children puts your body and clothing through the ringer, so khakis and other simple pairs of pants combined with a stretchable and modest top work best. As for my nights out, I opt for lots of color and like to have bright and vibrant jewelry that really makes the entire outfit come together. Shoes, along with jewelry, are my favorite accessories.

I love dresses, especially a good summer dress. It’s so easy to throw on and just go. Jewelry can really shine when paired with the right dress. The right jewelry can dress up a simple summer dress and transform it right into the perfect date night.

In my wardrobe right now, I have about fifteen summer dresses hibernating, just waiting for the warmth of spring and summer.



What is the one piece of clothing or accessory you wish you owned, but would never buy yourself?

When it comes to that one fashion piece that I wish I owned, but would never buy myself, it would have to be anything Michael Kors. I love the simplistic style of many items in his fashion lines but just couldn’t shell out that much money on a “fashion whim”.



Does a designer name mean anything to you? If so, who are your favorite designers?

Designer names don’t hold much importance to me personally. I have seen many fashion lines in magazines and on TV hating 90% of the pieces that came down the runway, and then saw one or two items that really spoke to me. It’s all about what catches your attention. That being said, I do admire many styles year after year from the Michael Kors Collection. His line is always clean, upscale, and beautiful.

Do you look for a bargain or is price not an issue if you love it?

I am definitely a bargain shopper. Being a young adult and learning to live on my own has taught me a lot about how to manage my money. I am always looking for a good sale and can spend lots of time going through the clearance racks at department stores to find “a steal”. In the past when I have splurged on a more expensive item I have MAJOR buyer’s remorse and think of all the other things I could have done with that money, like making an extra student loan payment.



What are your favorite local and online shopping spots?

One of my favorite local places to find clothes is Target.

They have a lot of different styles that are offered at reasonable prices. Target usually has a huge clearance selection and I have never walked out empty handed or disappointed. It’s a great one-stop shop for clothing, shoes, jewelry, bags, and make-up. Online I am more hesitant to buy clothing for the simple fact that you can’t try it on before you buy it, and returning it inevitably is a hassle. However, I have had some surprising success with Groupon. In their Goods section, they offer shoes, clothing, and jewelry at bargain prices. You just have to act quickly because their available stock often diminishes fast. Another surprising store where I have found fashion success is

BJ’s. I recently bought a Nautica cowl neck sweater, normally priced at $50 elsewhere, only paying $25 for it. It’s quickly become a favorite for my fall/winter wardrobe.



What wardrobe essentials do you think are vital to pull off the perfect look for you?

For my personal style, the essentials would have to be jewelry. Jewelry can greatly enhance an outfit. It can soften a look, dress it up, or just give it a little bling. A work outfit can get a big upgrade from a necklace, earrings, and a few bangles, making it worthy of going directly from work to a fun night out.



What is the best piece of style advice you would like to share with our readers?

The most important thing that I stick to when it comes to fashion is to stick to what makes me happy and gives me confidence. I don’t have to wear the same style of pants, or have the same shirt in a variety of colors. I can get creative and go outside of my fashion box, putting together what I have to create a good look.

As long as the reflection in the mirror always reflects the true person that I am on the inside, then that’s all I need.

Serendipity’s Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe

This is the original Serendipity frozen hot chocolate recipe. *(with one change.)

6 oz. chopped semisweet chocolate 3 cups whole milk, divided 1 Tbsp. plus 1 tsp. your favorite powdered hot chocolate mix 3 Tbsp. sugar 6 cups ice cubes top with whipped cream *Place chopped chocolate and 1/4 cup of the milk in a microwave-safe container. Heat on 50% power for 1 minute. Stir. (If necessary, continue heating in 30-second increments until chocolate is melted.)

(Authentically, the melting process is done stove top) Add hot chocolate mix and sugar. Stir.

Slowly pour in 1/2 cup of the milk. Stir, and let cool to room temperature. Pour cooled chocolate mixture into blender.

Add remaining milk and ice cubes.

Puree until smooth. Top with whipped cream and serve immediately. Makes 2 giant frozen hot chocolates.

Neiman Marcus Chocolate Chip Cookies

Fine 7 UP Cake

1 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup shortening 3 cups sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 5 eggs, at room temperature 3 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup 7 UP Glaze: 1/4 cup 7 UP 1/2 cup sugar

Preheat oven to 300°F. Grease and flour a 10-inch tube pan.

Combine butter, shortening, sugar, vanilla and almond extract in the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

In a separate bowl, combine the flour and salt, and add to butter/ sugar mixture alternately with 1 cup 7 UP, beating well after each addition. Spoon batter into prepared 10-inch tube pan, and bake for 1 hour and 45 minutes, or until cake tester comes out clean.

Cool in pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes, then invert on serving plate and remove pan.

While cake is cooling, make the glaze by stirring together the 1/4 cup 7 UP and 1/2 cup sugar in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, and boil 1 to 2 minutes or until sugar is completely dissolved. Punch holes in top of warm cake with a toothpick.

Spoon glaze over cake, and cool completely before serving. www.livingwellmagazine.net

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened 1 cup light brown sugar 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 large egg 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1-3/4 cups all purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1-1/2 teaspoons instant espresso coffee powder 1-1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Cream the butter with the sugars using an electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy (approximately 30 seconds) Beat in the egg and the vanilla extract for another 30 seconds.

In a mixing bowl, sift together the dry ingredients and beat into the butter mixture at low speed for about 15 seconds.

Stir in the espresso coffee powder and chocolate chips.

Using a 1 ounce scoop or a 2 tablespoon measure, drop cookie dough onto a greased cookie sheet about 3 inches apart. Gently press down on the dough with the back of a spoon to spread out into a 2 inch circle. Bake for about 20 minutes or until nicely browned around the edges. Bake a little longer for a crispier cookie. Yields: 2 dozen cookies
