Sylvia Plath once said, “There must be quite a few things that a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them.” While that’s certainly debatable, the luxury of a hot bath is not. I could never live (happily) without a tub. That’s a luxury that’s always been available to me and to most of us reading this magazine. Indeed, having clean, running all. While putting together this Kitchen and Bath issue, much of the world is taking refuge from the COVID-19 virus in their own homes, breaking bread with family members and reconnecting with their own spaces. We have been taking stock of what is truly important in this life, and turning our attention back to our houses, apartments and condos.

Many of us are spending isolation time improving and rediscovering our surroundings — decorating, cooking, playing with the kids. LL contributor Jessica Gilbert (who styled our cover star Mark McEwan) was wallpapering her bedroom last we spoke.

For this issue, we travelled up to Thornbury, Ontario on the banks of Georgian Bay to meet with the acclaimed chef, who welcomed us into his home kitchen (before the dawn of social distancing). It’s here where he does his best work, serving up simple but delicious local fare, much from his own garden. Lifestyle Editor Jeanne Beker talks with him about his rise to culinary fame and his thoughts on how we consume and prepare food today (page 94). Hint: we aren’t all in love with cooking, it seems. I, too, am guilty of that, but like many of us at this time, I am learning to appreciate the simple joys right here at home.

Enjoy the beautiful homes and objects in this issue, my first as part of the Living Luxe family, then when the page has turned on this pandemic, let us be changed for the better...and truly cherish our own luxuries.

First of all, I hope everyone is well and safe.

I know this is a challenging time for everyone, considering these unprecedented circumstances that we now face together.

I have to say that, even though I cannot go outside much or run day-today errands, I feel very grateful that I have been spending my days with my children and Eleanor, our wonderful nanny (or as I call her “Super Tita”).

I still wake up some days in true disbelief, but I understand that social distancing and staying at home to flatten the curve is very necessary for our health care systems. I myself have childhood asthma, so am staying home to remain safe. I’ve been enjoying chasing my children — playing hopscotch in the backyard, or helping my son create an indoor garage sale, where Eleanor and I are buying bracelets from him, or whatever he creates that day. He’s so proud of raising money — wow, he’s so young to be a little entrepreneur. My children are studying and learning from home. I really feel so fortunate that we are learning together and sharing these memories as a family.

I also wanted to personally thank all the amazing heroes that risk their lives to protect all of us — from our nurses, hospital personnel, and physicians, to all the staff who work in the grocery stores and pharmacies. You are all so brave and I am very grateful for everything that you do for us.

Towards the end of March, we started doing live Instagram videos to unite everyone, spread positivity, and keep things as fun as possible. Little did I know that this would become part of my weekly routine. We interview various designers, celebrities, and contributors, and play a bit of Living Luxe trivia, where we give away prizes from our generous partners. We usually go live Friday evenings at 8 p.m., so stay connected @livingluxemagazine and join us regularly to be part of the fun.

As always, I wish everyone a wonderful and safe summer. Thank you for being part of this journey with us and supporting our magazine. Lastly, a big thank you to our wonderful Living Luxe team for producing this beautiful issue.

In the mid-1950s, an ambitious young man left his homeland in search of a better life for his family. Anthony Basso arrived in Canada carrying a work ethic instilled by his parents and a traditional upbringing. Basso and his wife, Bertilla, eventually started a company in Toronto called “Anthony’s Art Design,” specializing in ceramic lamps, a trade in which he made a name for himself in Italy. The couple’s daughter, Florence, went on to marry Robert Pietrobon, whose family had immigrated to Canada from the shared his new father-in-law’s work ethic and quickly became involved in his company. In 1981, he launched Zaneen as a sister company selling decorative interior lighting.

ion’s heady ’90s ride, I asked the late pop-culture visionary Malcolm McLaren about where things were going. “What’s the next red-hot arena? And who are the future superstars?” Without skipping a beat, he replied, “Oh it’s going to be about food. Food is so sensual, even sexier than fashion. And chefs will be the next big celebrities.” While I’d always appreciated the art of cuisine, I couldn’t imagine that super-stardom would be in the cards for any of the culinary masters I knew. But, here I am two decades later, sitting in Yorkville’s glam One Restaurant, across the table from Mark McEwan, one of Canada’s most savvy and successful chefs, and his rockstar glow is unmistakable.

“I sort of chuckle about it,” says the 63-year-old, who helms an empire of fine eateries and gourmet emporiums in and around Toronto.

“Because when I first got into the business in the mid ’70s, it wasn’t glamorous to be a chef. We were relegated as domestic help. When I told my family that I was working on an apprenticeship to be a cook, there was absolute silence at the dinner table,” he reminisces. McEwan’s family, who lived in Buffalo, NY, would have preferred that he’d be a lawyer or accountant. “You’re gonna cook chicken?!” asked his incredulous grandmother. McEwan’s family didn’t have any inkling of the food business, and neither did he, but he’d worked a bit at restaurants in high school and got hooked. “I love the whole interaction of a restaurant, customer service, the bar, the wine list. I thought it was all amazing,” says McEwan.

So he took a year off from school in 1976 and got an apprenticeship at Toronto’s old Constellation Hotel, devouring cookbooks by French chefs like Paul Bocuse and fantasizing about going to Europe to pursue his dreams. But instead, he began paying his dues and learning invaluable lessons along the way. “It was anything but glamour,” says McEwan, “but I discovered that I was a natural with service, making breakfast for 800 people, and getting it out on time, and making all the customers happy. I was really good at the mechanics of the business. Then I learned to cook after that.” As his confidence soared, McEwan rose through the ranks and then went to study at George Brown College. His first executive chef posting was at Toronto’s swank Sutton Place Hotel in 1979. But by the mid ’80s, he’d hawked everything he owned to buy a partnership in a cool Italian restaurant called Pronto. It wasn’t long before McEwan struck out on his own, with a spectacular eatery called North 44, the likes of which Toronto had never seen. The year was 1990 and McEwan was determined to make a splash. “I brought a designer in from London, England, to do it,” he says. “And I just about buried myself. I spent twice as much money as I had. But thank God I knew how to work hard and work my way through things.”

North 44 had a glorious 28-year run. By the time it closed its doors in 2018, McEwan had become a household name, synonymous with the gourmet experience. Besides launching into the TV stratosphere in 2006, with his own show “The Heat” and later “Chopped Canada,”

McEwan’s three eponymous Gourmet Grocery locations (Don Mills, Yonge and Bloor, and TD Centre), which stock a large percentage of prepared foods, have also been very well received. “People don’t really want to cook anymore,” opines McEwan. “With all the condos around, I would venture that if you open those fridges, you’d just find a half bottle of white wine, a half-dozen eggs, and maybe some moldy cheese,” he chuckles. “I don’t think they shop much. They’re always about the next meal.” This modern notion of not stocking up by doing large grocery shops is the way McEwan likes it in his own kitchen as well. “I’ll always have good standard basics in the fridge. I don’t buy processed food. I don’t buy much in boxes. I don’t need 80 feet of pasta.

I just want three selections of really good pasta and a homemade sauce.

When it comes down to what’s modern in food preparation today, McEwan has a definite point of view. He feels the modern approach for chefs is actually to be very traditional. “It’s about going back in time and learning the art of curing meat and doing old-school recipes perfectly well, rather that a lot of fanfare and orchestration on the plate.

Those days are somewhat over. I have no interest in that food any longer,” he says. “I like seasonality. I like food to be super simple and really good. I think a lot of chefs are starting to do that now.”

It’s the pursuit of beautiful simplicity that drives McEwan — a philosophy that also informs his notion of the ideal home kitchen.

“A proper refrigerator with a double door, a six-burner gas stove and proper oven, a set of sharp knives, and a cutting board,” says McEwan. “Some of the best cooking comes out of the simplest kitchen… I still cook in the Le Creuset pots I’ve had for 15 years and still use the same wooden spoon. And I get yelled at by my wife, Roxanne, because I still use this really ugly, grungy looking cutting board to display food because I think it’s beautiful. She thinks it’s unsanitary. But I think it’s got oodles of character,” he smiles.

McEwan feels that, sometimes, kitchens can be too slick and too “designed” for cooking. “And they’re not actually fun to cook in because they’re so pretty. For me, a kitchen has to have a bit of muscle to it, some oomph… surfaces that you can feel good about mucking up a bit. And you need a big sink next to the area that you chop on,

McEwan’s favourite place to cook is at his country home in Thornbury, Ont., not far from his newest Fabbrica location. He’s the most relaxed there, with more time to make meals for his friends.

“We entertain a lot. Almost every weekend we have people over to the house, whether it’s six people or 12 people. I’ll make a big pot of short ribs in a massive Le Creuset pot and I’ll start in the morning and braise things, because that’s easy to do. And then I’ll do a starch component like a soft polenta, and whatever veg is interesting, and I have a wine cellar, so I’ll pull some wine out.” Listening to the chef’s cozy routine, I’m suddenly transported to McEwan’s feel-good country kitchen. His passion for cooking for his friends is palpable. And it’s evident that despite all the satisfaction he finds in running his chic restaurants, fancy gourmet emporiums, and huge catering business, McEwan’s true joy really does come from pleasing people. And, major skill set aside, it’s precisely that air of affability that’s made Mark McEwan such a distinctive and beloved, true superstar chef.

Instead, she grounded the space with high-contrast dark cabinets, which create a less sterile and functional aura to the kitchen.

When the couple renovated the kitchen of their 40-year-old home in Sault Ste. The transformation started in 2018, when Peter and Lorraine realized their 25-year-old range was on its last legs. Renovation is a slippery slope and soon, with a clear direction in mind, the couple consulted O.NIX Kitchens & Living — a boutique Toronto firm specializing in fine cabinetry from Germany and Italy. “When Peter’s not working,

he loves to cook for others,” says Erika Luisa dela Cruz, co-founder of O.NIX. “He’d already sketched out where he wanted things to go and considered the function, and we worked with him to capture that vision.” With O.NIX taking the lead on cabinet design and floor plan, local designer Brie Gallagher guided Peter and Lorraine through the finishing touches and best choices for counters, tile, and lighting.

German-made Zeyko cabinets in Slate and Basalt Grey matte lacquer envelop the room with velvety softness, while the tile backsplash adds shimmer and sophistication for contrast.

The kitchen wasn’t the only zone that got a makeover; a wall came down to open the space up, creating an adjacent dining room and TV lounge. Now, the wide-open space is ideal for dinners à deux or entertaining family and friends.

“Peter and Lorraine’s house doesn’t have a modern exterior, so people assume the kitchen might be more traditional,” says dela Cruz.

“But they’re floored when they see this!” Peter agrees their kitchen may not be for everyone, but he and Lorraine wouldn’t change a thing: “It’s exactly the look and feel we love,” he says. “Even my 86-year-old father loves the colours, materials, style, and craftsmanship!”

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS Something about shine and kitchens go so well together. The monotone palette of this look showcases the true star of the space: Light. When Vaughan, Ontario-based designer and builder Miriam Manzo was ready to build her dream house, and a three-acre lot in an older pocket of the city came on the market, she didn’t hesitate. With trees covering the acreage, it was the perfect site to build her custom home.

“I was ready,” she says. “I had designed a floor plan five years prior to finding the property. My husband, Emilio Manzo, is a builder, developer and contractor, and between the two of us, I knew we could make this the home we’d been waiting for.” The first thing she did was scrap her original floor plan and completely revise her design to better suit the property’s 300-foot-wide frontage. She then walked the land to decide which trees to keep and clear. “I had initially thought we’d put up a 6,000-square-foot house, but after working with the architect and taking my plans into consideration, we settled on a five-bedroom, 7,800-square-foot home with a 3,000-square-foot basement with almost 12-foot ceilings.”

Manzo, who runs a home-staging business alongside her design firm, had several must-haves on her wish list. “I knew I wanted nanny quarters, a home gym, a bar and 1000+ bottle wine cellar, a theatre,

Georgian Custom Renovations crafts a dynamic high-end kitchen for a family of foodies.

While Gerry and Mirella loved pretty much everything about their warm and inviting Thornhill, Ont., home, they weren’t fond of the most used room in the house.

At 200 square feet, the kitchen was cramped, poorly lit, had minimal storage, and it just didn’t fit their lifestyle — they enjoy hosting lively weekend dinners with their kids and grandchildren. So, they turned to Georgian Custom Renovations to fix their kitchen-party woes.

INTEGRATED TECH There were several wish-list additions Georgian brought to fruition, including satisfying Gerry’s desire to watch TV while cooking. “We installed a 32-inch TV on retractable brackets inside the millwork in the cabinet above the appliance garage,” says Gene Maida, president of Georgian Custom Renovations.

BEFORE: “When Gerry and Mirella approached us, their primary concern was the size of the kitchen.

They wanted to make it much bigger by reconfiguring the interior,” says Maida. “They barely used the living room, so we immediately decided to remove the wall between the rooms to make one large space for the kitchen.”

EYE-CATCHING FEATURES After extensive renovations, the couple ended up with an impeccably designed 400-square-foot kitchen — with plenty of storage and countertop space — that better suits their needs. “When you walk into the kitchen, you now see the stainless-steel vent hood surrounded by a Calacatta slab backsplash that merges seamlessly into the countertop.

That area has become the focal point,” says Maida.

HIGH-END APPLIANCES They chose a French double-door Monogram oven and a Wolf cooktop, which is flanked by drawers for pots and cutlery.

PERFECT PALETTE White upper cabinets and grey lowers combined with black pendants and a waterfall countertop impart a sense of drama. Grounding the space is beautiful black-walnut hardwood installed on the diagonal, which creates a dynamism to the room.

A beautiful mix of materials grounds two distinct kitchens by Flexwood Fine Cabinetry

SPACE COWBOY When approached by a builder in Oakville, Ontario to create something truly one of a kind, Martin Guzda had the solution: White, glam, lots of metal. “He wanted something very unique, something you can’t pick up off a shelf,” says Guzda who runs Flexwood Fine Cabinetry with his father Walter. The effect is immediate and impactful. With prominent metal work and high-gloss panels, this kitchen is not for the faint of heart.

Guzda took the metal inspiration further by having a chunky bank of drawers custom fabricated by a local metalworker in stainless steel with an elegant mirror finish. The approach was fun and experimental. “We had him mock up some concepts on the fly, “ says Guzda. “It was very tough to put together.” But clearly, it was worth the effort. There were a few other challenges in the process that resulted in beautiful, design-changing solutions. “The high-gloss materials only come in certain lengths, so we designed metal chrome reveals to make it work.” The result is indeed unique, almost futuristic. To light up the space, geometric pendant lights echo the modern view, while LED lighting around the fridges and canopy further accentuate the metal detailing.

SHINING LIGHT Nothing spells comfort like natural materials; its restful on the eye and soulful to the touch. In this west Toronto home, wenge-wood veneer cabinets envelop the room without being overbearing. With lighter tones in a matte finish, the look feels current. The showstopper, though, is a ceiling-height glass cabinet for wine and curiosities. Simple and refined, it delineates the kitchen while leading your eye into the adjoining dining room.

In lieu of a heavy centre island, Guzda built integrated floating cabinets on the island that break up the mass and leave breathing room both visually and physically.

For the upper cabinets, touch latches were used to keep the look sleek and elegant, with Guzda sourcing understated hardware from Blum.

Don Alfonso 1890’s open kitchen takes pride of place in the middle of the restaurant with a mezzanine lounge above. Designer Nadia Di Donato installed the kitchen’s counters at 38 inches high to allow for a more unobstructed sightline from the dining room.

It was, as Nadia Di Donato calls it, “ The Michelin Mission.” For two years, the vice president and creative director of the acclaimed Liberty Entertainment Group and her husband, Nick, the group’s president and CEO, toured the globe in search of a high-end partnership with a Michelin-starred chef. The couple’s quest took them from Peru to Italy and it was there, in an elegant trattoria on the Amalfi Coast, that they found what they were looking for in Don Alfonso 1890 — a storied institution established by Chef Alfonso Iaccarino, now being run by his son, Ernesto. “We wanted to translate what we felt discovering Alfonso and Ernesto’s fresh, new cuisine and bring it to Toronto,” says Nadia. “It’s quite a departure from the rustic Italian food we are used to here.” Once the duo secured the historic Consumers’ Gas Building on Toronto Street as the venue, it

You’ve designed more than 20 restaurants in your career. Where do you begin when approaching a new concept?

My background is in graphic design, so each project is an art piece.

I’m never just thinking about the interior itself — my approach starts with a clear vision of the food we’re serving and the experience we’re creating. I always have to ask and answer one important question: “How do I want the customer to feel?”

Dining out is theatrical and emotional. What’s the feeling you hoped to evoke at Don Alfonso 1890?

I want people to experience the entire restaurant in the first few minutes, so they can take in the kitchen, which is right in the middle of the restaurant, and appreciate the openness and airiness. I also included high-backed banquettes, which serve as dividers and allow people to be enveloped when they wish for privacy. There’s also an element of subtle luxury — I modelled the chairs after the Cartier “Love” bracelet — but most of all, the words I’d use to describe the mood of Don Alfonso 1890 are fresh, sophisticated, and significant.

Are you more concerned with the big picture or are you also involved in the details?

For me, design isn’t limited to the space itself: it extends through many layers from the furniture and tableware to the menu and wardrobe of our team. All of these elements combine to create the design magic we’re known for.

Were there challenges in working with a landmark building?

The classic shell of the Consumers’ Gas Building, which was built in 1852, gave me the opportunity to contrast its historical cornice

the right fit?

In this case, I spotted The Crane at Art Basel in Miami and it stopped me in my tracks. It was a bit controversial at first — I was proposing a six-by-four-foot skull for the middle of the restaurant, after all! — but now it’s the picture everyone wants to take. As for Daniel Mazzone’s painting, he and I talked about the motif of significant women through history; it felt timely and I wanted a striking, colourful focal point when you enter the restaurant’s white palette.

Why is art such an important feature in your designs?

Fine art is like an accent piece of jewellery and it’s my signature to include individually curated or commissioned art pieces. They reflect the personality of the space and add originality and intrigue.
