Letter from Jennifer

To Good Health and Good Cheer I hope this letter finds everyone healthy and safe. I know I have said this for a while now but these are truly unprecedented times and I really hope that matters will improve in the coming months. We all hope for this. I know things are much harder than usual but there’s a bright side — we are all in this together.

That said, I do have to say that I miss my parents and my entire extended family and friends who live in Montreal. I normally see my parents every few months and unfortunately due to COVID-19, I have not been able to see them since January. It will soon be a year since our last trip together as a united family. I am comforted by the fact that I can FaceTime or Skype and at least see everyone I love virtually. This winter holiday, I will likely have a staycation with my two wonderful children and our tita, Eleanor. I’m looking forward to creating wonderful memories together. I know most of us will be celebrating the holidays differently this year, just with those who live in our households. At least we can use modern technology to help us make beautiful memories and unite us as we stay safe.

We’re also celebrating here at Living Luxe. It has been just over a year now since we officially launched this beautiful magazine and I am truly proud of our core team for the work that they do. Lisa, our editor-in-chief, you inspire me, and your dedication since day one will never be forgotten. I am so grateful to call you our EIC and I am excited to take this journey with you. To Anthony, our chief operating officer, I thank you for all your hard work. You started this journey with me. I am so thankful for you. Break Free from the Cold This winter brings more than the expected chilled temperatures and falling snow. We’ve been inundated with all things COVID-19 for nearly a year, and I’m not going to put it gently — it’s been really hard; it’s wearing on the best of us. While the pessimist in me is the one who usually takes over, my inner optimist (she’s somewhere in here) reminds me to have hope — hope for a new year that brings health, happiness and an abundance of good things for us all.

The latter is one of the biggest reasons why our team at Living Luxe has continued to push and create these pages from the comfort of our homes — we’ve been dedicated to making sure you have something good to read during this stressful time. In fact, I hope you’re sitting on your favourite chair right now, a cold-weather cocktail in one hand (think cranberry mimosa or hot buttered rum) and this issue in the other. I hope you enjoy devouring every gorgeous home we have on offer. Feel free to view us as an escape — an escape from the pandemic, and an escape from the below-zero weather outside your door.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how special this issue in particular is for me, as it’s my first as editor-in-chief. I’ve been part of Living Luxe since the first issue and I’m so pleased to be able to continue bringing you some of the most extraordinary abodes from some of the most talented designers I’ve ever come across. I’m no stranger to this industry — I’ve been a magazine journalist for nearly two decades and, in that time, I’ve been blessed to work for a roster of simply incredible publications. But Living Luxe has been such a pleasure. It’s hard work, good times and “super posh,” as I tell my two daughters, Addyson, 12 (who, incidentally, wants to be an interior designer when she grows up) and Peyton, 10. Telling them about the work we’ve done on this magazine has reminded me that there’s something beautiful in taking a break from the news of the day and simply relishing a feel-good read.

Luckily, that’s what we specialize in.

It’s often a lot of grey and beige.” But Anderson noted this place was different—there were bright velvet couches, plush cream satin seats, brass detail coffee tables and intriguing sculptures.

The store made such an impression on her that, a few months later, Anderson approached the owners regarding merchandising. She ended up getting hired and she began working at the store as a designer. She helped promote the store at IDS in January 2018, but after that event, things started to slow down. “It wasn’t moving at the pace I thought it would,” says Anderson. She was enthusiastic about bringing in the right items for the trendy Queen West clientele and worked hard to promote the store. That spring, the owners asked her flat-out if she wanted to buy the franchise.

“I guess I was pretty obvious,” she says with a laugh.

Anderson took over the franchise in May 2018, closed to completely re-merchandise and hosted a grand reopening in June. Taking over KARE Toronto — the contemporary decor and furnishing store — was the perfect move for Anderson. Not only was she excited to build the brand in the city, the store complemented her design and staging business, Interiors + Impressions co-founded with Carla Guzman. “After a brief intro, I was speaking with Jennifer Lipkowitz,

I agreed and started a piece of work from scratch.” After spending four days painting an abstract, on the fourth night she had a vision. “I saw Bunee and drew it on my iPad immediately. I was also compelled to

Since that first-ever Bunee painted for Living Luxe, Joleen has expanded her creation. She painted a custom Bunee for artist Max Jamali to thank him for offering advice. “From there I realized the Bunee was so versatile. It can be couture or the buyer can be the subject,” she says.

Joleen has since painted Bunees for fellow artists Peter Triantos and Diogo Snow (among others), and her Couture series sold out. Next came the Lamorghini Bunee. Joleen was approached by Grand Touring Auto and in mid-August — the company requested a Bunee that could fit in the seat of a Lamborghini. “I was talking to Kam Movassaghi, a luxury brand specialist in Ontario. I agreed to make a Bunee to fit in the seat of an Evo Huracan. After some photos and dimensions were taken, I went off to create Lamborghini Bunee that was sized 18 inches by 36 inches, the size of the Huracan seat.” Joleen says the experience was incredible.

CANFAR’s Can You Do Lunch fundraiser

On September 9, CANFAR hosted their annual Can You Do Lunch? fundraiser.

To fall in line with Toronto’s Phase 3 regulations, organizers sent a list of strict protocols (established by Four Seasons and Johns Hopkins University) to guests ahead of time. Red carpet arrivals took place on a staggered schedule, and 130 guests were welcomed into three separate Four Seasons rooms. Discussions with people living with HIV included several pre-recorded videos. Live performances did take place, but even those had extra safety levels: Billy Newton-Davis performed “Somewhere” from West Side Story from behind a plexiglass shield.

The main goal was to raise awareness and push for self-testing. “Easily available self-testing kits are essential in meeting our goal of ending the HIV epidemic in Canada by 2025,” says Sylvia Mantella, member of the CANFAR board of directors. “Self testing means you don’t have to go to a doctor’s office or visit a clinic.

It’s the first step to seeking treatment.” Tuning in from home to further support the effort, another 150 guests watched via video and dined upon a catered lunch delivered to their door that day. The gala raised over $200,000, a 20 percent increase from last year. All in all, a successful and safe event.

PASSIONATE ALESSANDRO MUNGE IS ON A CREATIVE HIGH. As one of the world’s most successful multidisciplinary designers, the 50-year-old dynamo is luxuriating in a sea of diverse and coveted commissions, from international hotels, resorts and residences to some of the most glamorous and memorable restaurants imaginable.

And during these uncertain times, when lifestyles as we knew them continue to evolve, Munge’s courage, drive and optimism are serving him exceedingly well. He’s determined to make the world not only a more beautiful place, but a more interesting and inspiring place, challenging conservative notions by injecting elements of storytelling and unabashed glamour into the spaces and places we frequent and inhabit.

I’ll never forget the opening night of the Bisha Hotel in 2017. I’d long admired owner Charles Khabouth’s sense of daring ingenuity as a restaurateur who was determined to make an exciting mark on our city. But the second I walked through Bisha’s grand doors, I was floored by the arresting drama that greeted me. It was dark, rich, sumptuous and incredibly sexy — an environment that actually seemed a little un-Toronto to me. And that’s what made me love it more: The unexpected had finally arrived. Munge — Bisha’s designer extraordinaire — concedes that the feel of the hotel might not be for everyone. But that’s precisely why it works. “Our hospitality in our city is just not blowing up to the extent which it could,” Munge laments, realizing that some clients are not as ready to push the envelope as others. “But there’s a certain kind of tribe, a certain kind of person out there who understands what we do. And when we bring it to life, it’s clients, guests and customers like that who enjoy these spaces and really make that energy.”

A lot of the stories of bullying can scar patients for their entire lives,” he says. “I’ve found that patients who undergo rhinoplasty surgery — from teenagers to 70-year-olds — have a similar response. Often, the post-surgical experience is quite emotional, and

patients feel relief and they’re able to let go of some of their insecurities that they developed at a young age and held onto.” These stories keep Dr. Solomon feeling grateful and motivates him to work hard. “My parents were immigrants to Canada and always made me feel that I could do what I wanted to do. Instilling that confidence in a child allows them to flourish. I feel fortunate that my parents chose Toronto,” he says.

“I believe that with hard work and commitment, there are tremendous opportunities for success. I hope this continues to be the case for the next 20 years.”

It’s quite the opposite, actually. Naranjo, the founder of Toronto-based Alexandra Naranjo Designs, beams when she passionately talks about the effect colour has on design — the way it brings emotion, distinctiveness and prominence to a project. You’d be hardpressed to find a home Naranjo has designed that doesn’t have at least one room that celebrates colour — and looking through her portfolio, that colour is usually blue.

For Naranjo, it’s not only her favourite colour, the cool hue offers a versatile palette and works beautifully when designing with neutral shades. “To me, colour is an expression of personality. Our homes are an extension of us, and we can use blue to make our spaces even more personal.

Both colours are so versatile, and they work perfectly together,” she says. “Sometimes we make statements on the walls and leave big pieces in a typically neutral colour, but in my world, blue is a neutral shade. It’s classic and so easy to work with. It can be mixed with metals, white, greens and even with a tiny pop of lavender. There are so many options when using blue.”

The royal-blue office, dubbed “the blue room,” in this client’s historical home was a dining room before Naranjo and her team renovated. The new design was inspired by two stunning pieces: the wallpaper, which was selected by the homeowner (it features a natural pattern of leaves and birds), and the vibrant colour of Wedgewood-blue China. “Instead of going with one shade of blue, I used various hues when designing this room — you can see how beautifully the plush velvet chairs, ceiling moulding, baseboards, custom-made desk and cabinetry work together,” she says. Even the showstopping light fixture above the desk pays homage to blue. The frosted-glass baubles are also done in various blues and each balloon-like pendant hangs from different heights, creating an amazing focal point.

If bringing colour into your abode still feels overwhelming, Naranjo suggests layering it in more subtle ways, such as in drapery, bedding, rugs and accessories. “You don’t have to be married to one shade of blue — many work well together. Depending on the shade, you can create any atmosphere, from a more regal, over-the-top space to a calming room,” says Naranjo. “If you are married to a colour you adore — and it brings you comfort and happiness — see if you’re still in love with the shade in six months or a year from now. But before you hibernate, get your bed ready for the season. These suggestions are sure to have you warm, toasty and dreaming of next spring.

Baby, it’s cold outside, and there’s a reason why we yearn for warmth and comfort when the weather chills and the days shorten. Canadian winters are harsh and leave us reminiscing about hot summer days just a few months ago. If you’d much rather keep as cozy as possible when temperatures plunge, David Saini, president of Toronto’s David’s Fine Linens, can help.

Saini, who has been bringing luxury linens to Canada since 1977, says customers start getting their bedrooms ready for winter in October. “This is when they start looking for things like flannel sheets and winter duvets. They’re also drawn to darker colours like charcoal greys,” he says. We asked Saini for his advice when it comes to preparing the bedroom and linens for the snow and gloomier days. Here’s what he suggests.

There’s nothing like a down duvet, and it’s all about quality when it comes to selecting the right one for you. Saini says duvets, which are typically made of natural filling like down or silk, are perfect for the bed not only just in winter, but throughout the seasons. “You need to look for quality and how insulating the duvet is,” he says, adding down quality depends on a variety of factors, such as the maturity of the goose or duck. “The more mature the bird is, the higher quality of down you will get. The more mature the down is, the better insulation your body will have,” he says.

When you’re buying, Saini suggests looking for higher-grade down or silk (which is 100 percent hypoallergenic) and a classic-weight duvet, that way, you can use the duvet year-round. Your best bet is to skip polyester — it doesn’t breathe (you’ll end up overheating) and won’t insulate the body the same way down does.

Flannel sheets If you like a really warm, cozy bed, flannel sheets are likely on your must-have list. They’re warmer than regular sheets, and help you sleep more comfortably and soundly in the colder months. Saini says cotton-flannel sheets are very breathable and have that luxuriously soft feeling. “Some flannel is thick and rough — that’s not quality flannel. You want something that’s smooth like silk,” he says.

Flannel sheets trap air and can actually make a positive effect on heating bills in the winter — they’re that warm. “There’s something most people tend to look at when they’re looking at buying flannel sheets,” says Saini. “They always want to see what the thread count is, but thread count isn’t important when it comes to flannel sheets. Yarn count and weight is much more important here — this will indicate the quality and softness of the sheets.”

For example, flannel that says “five ounces” means that every square yard of the sheet weighs five ounces. Good-quality flannel will always mention weight. European flannel is also a favourite among Saini’s clients.

“Some flannel is thick and rough-that’s not quality flannel. You want something that’s smooth like silk.”

Sheets If you’re not a fan of flannel, consider sheets in micro modal as a good all-season set that will still keep you warm in winter. Micro modal is as twice as soft as cotton, it’s light and it’s made from beechwood cellulose. (It’s even been used to make underwear.) “I brought micro modal to Canada 20 years ago and it’s been popular since. These sheets breathe better than cotton, they’re still soft after many washings and the experience you have sleeping in them is like nothing else,” he says.

Throws and toss pillows You have warm sheets and the perfect duvet, but that doesn’t mean you’re finished prepping your bedroom for winter. Snug, comfy additions to your room include the always decorative throws and pillows, says Saini. “Lots of beautiful throws come from Europe, including stunning cashmere and merino wool blankets. Mohair from South Africa is also quite popular.” Consider layering pillows and throws made of faux fur and velvet for added warmth.

ASK NANCY SAAVEDRA TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT DOORS AND YOU’RE IN FOR AN ABSOLUTE TREAT. There are few things the CEO, co-founder and creative director of Art Boulle — the premiere company that specializes in ornamental and architectural metal and woodwork — is more passionate about. When it comes down to it, she says doors obviously function as a property’s security, but that’s not all they do. “They have a design element that’s not only viewed on a daily basis, they can make or break a deal when you’re talking real estate,” Nancy says confidently.

Named for the Baroque period’s André-Charles Boulle, a designer who worked for the king and was renowned for his exquisite cabinetry, especially in the field of marquetry (also known as “inlay”), Art Boulle is first-class when it comes to design, quality and craftsmanship. “Our clients desire doors that are unique; doors that will become the signature piece of their estate.

Before getting into the fine details, it’s vital to know Art Boulle’s process for creating a showstopping door. Saavedra says it all starts with a briefing, where the Art Boulle team gets all the elements the client is looking for in their door — the overall look, feel, vision and budget. Next are early collaborations — architectural specifications of the client’s home are provided, and the design team collaborates with the architect if necessary. “The design phase is key — this is where we get a clear objective of the style and finishes. This grand design of this door began with the careful selection of raw materials and refined techniques. The elegant metal door showcases a classy Versacelike pattern called “meandros.”

The pattern is a decorative border constructed from a continuous line, shaped into a continuous motif; it is also referred to as the Greek key design. The unique pattern was among the most important symbols in ancient Greece and is said to symbolize infinity and unity.

“We pride ourselves on employing the finest materials and the most skilled artisans who have perfected their craft through generations. It’s the unflinching dedication of our artisans that allow for the design and creation of our most intricate iron and wood pieces.” Saavedra says what each artisan creates is truly an eccentric work of art. What’s more, all pieces are hand-crafted in Art Boulle’s state-of-the-art facilities in Ecuador, “to preserve the history of their inspiration.” The final step in the process is the installation. “The final product is installed by licensed professionals who we work with to ensure the end result is to the client’s satisfaction. With stellar quality and creativity, our museum-style pieces are designed to stand the test of time.”

Metal Versus Wood Both are definitely a good choice, and each material has pros and cons. Nancy says Art Boulle’s metal doors are quickly becoming the “star building material” in several of her latest projects. “Our artisanal metalwork allows for an extraordinary exhibition of classical antiquity and modern cosmopolitan influences. Clients often select metal due to its artistic and contemporary representations, as well as for its astonishing longevity, lasting beauty and security,” she adds.

The fact that metal doors are also energy efficient, weather resistant and can handle rust are a few more reasons to go this route. “Thermally insulated cast iron doors can endure the Arctic cold and retain the heat inside your home. Plus, iron doors are ideal for Canadian winters as they resist indentation and abrasions.” Perhaps the most alluring reason to go for metal is its uniqueness. “Our clients are looking for signature, bespoke pieces. We strive to create doors that integrate premium quality materials into timeless, one-of-a-kind designs.”

Metal is remarkable, but don’t count wood out of the game just yet. Nancy says treated wood is an impeccable choice for a front door because it’s durable and energy efficient. “Wood doors are naturally warm and inviting, and they’re best used in covered areas such as a house with a portico or porch. Wood craftsmanship capabilities are rare to find in today’s world filled with mass production. From design to its final stage, hundreds of hours are invested to create a wood door using only the finest materials and the most skilled artisans,” she explains.

Setting out to design a restaurant inside one of the city’s most recognizable buildings is no small feat. Di Donato worked with the historical board to ensure the integrity of the castle was protected. When construction and design began, her goal was to restore all that’s magical about the space. “The design was overseen by Toronto’s Museum & Heritage Services. Every design detail from materials to construction was subject to approval by an appointed committee specific to the Casa Loma and BlueBlood projects. We developed a mutual respect for the desire to beautify and modernize the space while still respecting the integrity of the historic backdrop,” she says, adding it was important to incorporate a modern aesthetic to update a traditional space. “Modern

HOME AWA Y F RO M HOME When her clients bought a condo in the city, designer Jane Lockhart knew just how to update their unit while ensuring the incredible view of the lake took centre stage.

The King’s Landing condominium is one of those iconic buildings in Toronto blessed with an ideal location, architectural importance and extraordinary views. Completed in the mid-1980s, before the city’s big condo boom, the 12-storey south-facing building on the corner of Queens Quay West and Spadina Avenue was designed by famed architect Arthur Erickson. Known for his work in urban centres, Erickson agreed to take on the waterfront project even with its obstacles: With the building’s location between the noisy Gardiner Expressway and Harbourfront, he had to quiet sounds of the city and ensure every resident received a breathtaking view. The

result remains quite the sight today — Erickson designed each floor with receding terraces and sunrooms overlooking Lake Ontario, the Toronto Music Garden and the islands. The building is sound insulated.

Three years ago, when designer Jane Lockhart’s clients bought a condo in King’s Landing, they knew it would need some work to update. “They live in Niagara but go downtown often, so they decided to purchase the condo instead of staying in hotels,” says Lockhart. “They really got what they wanted when they purchased this space — something classic, elegant and a design that wouldn’t take away from their view.” Their 2,000-square-foot condo definitely has a lot going for it — a spacious place where you forget you’re in the heart of the downtown core. The condo hadn’t been redecorated in decades — the green marble and pink wallpaper typical for ’80s builds needed to be removed, for example — but the good news was major renovations weren’t required.

With this in mind, Lockhart — who had worked with the older couple previously — knew what would please the new homeowners: She completed the hardwood flooring (and tore out the green-beige marble in the front foyer), divided the living spaces, covered the walls in metallic wallpaper and made the layout more conducive to her clients’ lifestyle.

“We kept what we could and what still worked,” she says. “We kept the

kitchen and only had to replace one appliance and update the hardware. We got rid of the pink, peach, seafoam and terracotta hues and opted for a neutral luxe taupe that offers a more neutral canvas.” She also made sure the furniture didn’t interfere with the view: For example, the custom low-back chairs in the area used as a boardroom were designed to ensure the view of the lake could be admired no matter where guests are seated.

Lockhart also updated the feel of the space by bringing in plenty of texture to add warmth and glamour. Take the lounge — the chaise near the window gives the couple a front-row seat to the music garden and the island airport, which can be seen when looking through binoculars. The burled oak panelling on the wall not only adds texture, it celebrates the building’s longevity. “These were popular 25 years ago but this one is updated and offers visual interest,” she says. The other thing that adds glamour is the ample size of the space.

“The thing about buying in a condo built in the 1980s is you get more square footage — developers were concerned about the size of the units and it mattered.”

When redesigning the principal bedroom, Lockhart was inspired by high-end hotels, and she wanted to evoke that feeling to make the room the perfect sanctuary for the couple.

Lockhart kept the couple’s bed, but she had a custom rug and nightstands made. The custom panels and the walls beside the bed are upholstered and framed.

Overall, Lockhart says updating the look and feel of the space was a pleasure, thanks to the gorgeous waterfront view and because the condo has stood the test of time. It had good bones, and that’s essential. “The condo is a prime example,” she says, “of the kind of work you get from great Canadian builders and architects.”

That was the case when the homeowner of this flawless abode in Oakville, Ont., got in touch with Marin Zabzuni, an architectural designer who’s also the founder and owner of Toronto-based design firm Contempo Studio. The client was looking for builders and designers who would construct his first custom home for his young family. He ended up being referred to Contempo Studio, and after meeting Marin and his brother Denis Zabzuni, the project manager of this build, he was sold. Still, there was one request for the brothers: He wanted a seat at the design table so he could pitch ideas, and he was keen on helping during the process. “We scheduled a

Friday Harbour isn’t cottagey; instead, it’s very upscale luxury yacht club,” she says, adding this concept worked beautifully with what the owner was looking for.
