Brighter Times Ahead I hope my letter finds everyone healthy and strong. I’m happy to report that I am writing this letter during better times. Schools are open and so are restaurants and events. Finally, things are looking up to be a more positive present and even sweeter future for us all. Our Living Luxe event was postponed from January to May 13 due to COVID restrictions. We are very excited to host our clients, contributors, supporters and readers at this fabulous gathering. The weather will be warmer in May, and we will not need our boots and winter coats — instead, we can dress for this festive occasion! I want to thank all of our sponsors for being a big part of this event; we are very grateful to each of you. I can’t wait to share photos with all of you in the pages of our Summer issue. We are also planning to host our first-ever Living Luxe exhibition later this year. We will be sharing more details soon, so be sure to keep an eye on our website (livingluxe.ca). In this issue, we feature the talented and beautiful Sangita Patel as our cover model. She’s truly a strong, independent and wonderful role model and I am excited for everyone to read her story, written by our lifestyle editor, Jeanne Beker. meantime, please stay connected on Instagram and Facebook (@livingluxemagazine). We always love hearing from our readers. Have a wonderful spring and enjoy this amazing issue filled with beautiful and inspiring stories. Until the next time,

Renewal Is In e Air Spring is an interesting time for magazines — there’s always content about rebirth, renewal, rejuvenation and reinvigoration. There are plenty of stories about how to revitalize your life — things like refreshing your wardrobe, taking up a new hobby and reconnecting with old friends (and connecting with new ones). I was trying to think about how I refresh for spring, and I try and get my resolutions and good habits (you know, the ones that inevitably fall off our radars) back on track. I try to be more productive and I get back outside for daily walks (without the harsh winter winds). I also try to do a digital detox — I go through my social media and unfollow anyone who doesn’t make my life more positive. It’s a good exercise that I highly recommend — it feels good to get negativity out of the way. Of course, there are a plethora of easy ways to refresh your home once the frigid temperatures are behind us and spring has sprung. I like to keep it simple in my own home — I’m a bit obsessed with buying throw pillows in bright, bold hues, patterns and textures. They’re fun to add to my existing collection, or to swap out altogether. My husband, Peter, doesn’t think we need “a million cushions,” but they give the couch a different look and put a smile on my face. (Isn’t that what it’s all about?) I was curious about what other folks do to welcome in the new season, so I asked a few of my colleagues on Team Living

Luxe to tell me how they reinvigorate their homes come spring. Publisher Jennifer Lipkowitz decorates with florals and brings the outdoors in. “I like to arrange fresh blooms, such as tulips, daffodils and tall, blooming branches of cherry and forsythia. I super-talented creative director, had a great idea: She told me she experiments with scents. She changes her scented soaps and candles and opts for lavender, lilac, citrus and other fresh aromas. “It’s a super-easy way to make the house feel really fresh. I also open the windows to let the crisp, clean air in. It always gives me a boost of energy,” she says. No matter how you refresh your home and rejuvenate other aspects of your life as you welcome in this season, I hope you’re feeling lighter now that the sun stays out longer and the frosty winter is (nearly) behind us. That’s something to celebrate. See you next time,

IsabelleFa is a world-renowned jewellery manufacturer that has lasted generations, thanks to age-old manufacturing techniques and a plethora of iconic pieces that truly stand the test of time. By Lisa van de Geyn

here’s a small village called Eisingen that borders the Black Forest in the south of Germany where

you can find true decadence and sheer brilliance. If you’re not familiar with the superb work of IsabelleFa, it’s time to get acquainted. The company is nothing less than an institution in Europe — a jewellery designer and manufacturer that has stood the test of time and has preserved the centuries-old craftsmanship called traditional chain-making. Their pieces are unique and exclusive, and for good reason: IsabelleFa isn’t in the business of mass-production, only a few hundred jewellery pieces are made per year — its founders are real goldsmiths with a passion for traditional chainmaking, an almost forgotten art that has a very long history. The company’s incredibly rich history starts with Emil Mössner, who became a master goldsmith in 1949. Before starting his own atelier in the summer of 1955, he worked as a goldsmith and chain-maker for other jewellery companies. “Back at that time, there were only farmers in our village, but my grandfather started a workshop called Emil Mössner Goldwaren in a tiny room he rented in the middle of the village,” says Alexandre Mössner, Emil’s grandson and the brand manager at IsabelleFa. With a small but mighty team of two other goldsmiths, he specialized in the intricacies of chain-making. “The demand for his chains was huge, so he became quite popular and, after building a bigger chain-makers, craftsmen, polishers and others,” says Alexandre.

The next stop for quality living is one mile from Niagara Falls, and Condoville knows how to get you there.

“We’re seeing the changing face of the area right now,” says Shaminder Gogna, the co-founder of Condoville Realty Inc. in Toronto. “It’s going to look sexy with a village charm, and Condoville gets to be a part of that.” While Gogna is, of course, referring to the Niagara Region, he is also talking about Condoville’s latest project in Chippawa as the exclusive marketers and salesforce behind the new development, Riverwalk Condominiums on the Canadian shore of the Niagara River. renowned Niagara Falls, Chippawa offers a beautiful and coveted location that is within proximity to the tourist and entertainment mecca but is far enough away to feel like a serene and secret getaway. Imagined with baby boomers in mind, the 51-unit condominium building, which is scheduled to be completed next fall, features luxury craftsmanship and details inside and out. With a style that combines big-city convenience with small-village comfort, each of the suites has been purposefully designed with high nine-foot ceilings and gorgeous wide-plank vinyl flooring throughout the main living areas. Big and bright energy-efficient windows frame each space, providing stunning and sweeping views of the region. “It’s surreal to be so close to such a wondrous tourist attraction and yet, still be able to look out your windows and be surrounded by parks and nature,” says Gogna. Penthouse suites boasting 1,200 to 1,690 square feet with expansive 200-square-foot balconies also have breathtaking views of the iconic Niagara River and local attractions. On the interior, each unit, including the building’s three- and four-bedroom penthouses, features well-planned details, such as kitchens equipped with soft-close cabinets, under-cabinet lighting, sleek and polished-looking quartz countertops and islands with overhead pendant lighting. Appliance packages are equally generous, offering stainless steel and energy-star certified 30-inch refrigerators, slide-in stoves and ovens, over-the-range microwaves complete with a hood fan, 24-inch dishwashers and more. “There’s definitely a high-end yet relaxed-living feel to it,” adds Gogna. “Riverwalk is just a short distance away from several golf courses, more than a handful of well-maintained and established parks to wander through and over 80 wineries to enjoy and tour.” With the penthouse collection starting from the high $1.3 million mark, residents of Riverwalk can also enjoy a wide array of indoor and outdoor amenities. An

inviting entrance lobby with a double-door entryway and lounge with seating areas and a fireplace greets owners and visitors alike, while a fully equipped fitness centre provides the latest strength and conditioning equipment, as well as a dedicated yoga and floor exercise area. “For the purchaser, this is the perfect exclusive neighbourhood to live in, whether it’s full time or a weekend retreat,” says Gogna. “Riverwalk is the best tucked-away secret.” But it won’t be for long. With the new Niagara Falls hospital build and a Metrolinx station for GTA commuters on the horizon, Niagara Falls is quickly becoming the new hot spot. And it’s convenient, too, above and beyond the seven-minute drive to grocery stores and big-box favourites. Welland and Niagara rivers, along with Kingsbridge Park, Riverview Park and Queen Victoria Park, are also all nearby, as are an infusion of new, one-of-a-kind cafes, vegan bakeries and boutiques. “It’s truly beautiful. The area is special and we’re bringing fresh energy to it while being respectful of the locals who live there,” says Gogna. “In three to five years, everyone who bought in Riverwalk will definitely feel privileged to live there. They’ll be happy that they got in when they did.”

PUMP UP THE VOLUME Looking for natural options for facial volume and rejuvenation? Facial Fat Grafting, PRP and Plasma Fillers are becoming the go-to treatments for anyone looking for safe, effective and natural cosmetic facial enhancements. Dr. Philip Solomon, MD, FRCSC, Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgeon, practicing Facial Plastic Surgery in Toronto, told us about the many benefits of these treatments.

women.

That being said, they are an essential tool in facial rejuvenation.

A third option is Plasma Filler, also known as Plasma Sculpting, which is getting lots of media attention and gaining in popularity. This treatment provides the benefits of PRP while also adding facial volume. The product we use combines your plasma with a bio-stimulating matrix gel. This combination creates a thick injectable product that is used similarly to dermal filler. This treatment requires the same preparation as PRP in that we draw the patient’s blood, spin it through a centrifuge to separate the plasma, and then combine with the gel. IMAGE BY ADOBE STOCK. Plasma Filler not only adds volume but can visibly improve skin health. LL: Why would a patient opt for Facial Fat Grafting instead of your typical filler? What are the benefits? Dr. Philip Solomon: We have patients who are looking for the most natural and long-lasting options for enhancement. Filler is temporary, lasting anywhere from six to 18 months, while Fat Grafting is typically long-lasting. Some of the fat can reabsorb within the first few months following treatment and then what remains provides a long-term result. What’s nice about Fat Grafting is that it not only adds volume, but it also has regenerative qualities that improve the overall complexion of the skin.

perception,” Dr. Tina says of the HiH’s approach. “It gives them a sense of recognition and stabilizes their emotions. It changes their sadness to joy.” Canada is committed to ending gender-based violence. Equality for Girls’ Access to Learning (EGAL) is a new Government of Canada grant-funded project that continues to develop successful approaches that build the resilience of young women and girls in the DRC to cope with the trauma of gender violence. The aim is to reduce their anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. EGAL, implemented by World Vision and Make Music Matter, removes the barriers to education to provide learning opportunities. The project aims to reach 600,000 people over three years, including more than 11,000 vulnerable children, girls and youth at risk of losing access to education. “We cannot eliminate violence against women and girls without educating them,” Dr. Tina says. “We need equal access to education. We have found that in the EGAL project area, participants of the Healing in Harmony program are now deciding to return to school. They want to be educated. They want to prosper. And they want to build their community.” “Grace,” one of the EGAL HiH participants, is a 19-year-old artist and young mother who shared her story after entering the program. “The story of my life makes me sick,” she said. “In 2017, there was a war in our province. The militiamen entered our house by force, killed my sister and then my grandfather, who paid my school fees. In the end, they raped me, and I ended up with an unwanted pregnancy. Since that time, I dream of the atrocities of the militiamen as if it was happening now. I live in total despair, and I am ashamed when I see my colleagues who progress in school.” After going through the HiH therapy and music sessions, she realized she was not responsible for what happened to her. Her nightmares diminished and she no longer feels shame and despair. “My thoughts about my life, my environment and my future changed. I relieved myself by sharing my story. I feel good with my body and feel connected to the child I thought I would never love.” Now her desire is to go back to school and study like her peers, regardless of what people will say about her. She is hoping to find a way to pay her school fees with World Vision’s help. Together as Canadians, we can do more to end this shadow pandemic of violence. Learn about how you can help people in war-torn DRC and other dangerous places through World Vision’s Raw Hope initiative at worldvision.ca/rawhopecause.

By Joan Kelley Walker My last trip with World Vision Canada was to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The reality of life there is much different than what we know, and I want to shed light on a terrible topic that lingers in the shadows — sexual violence against women and girls. It happens everywhere, including in Canada, but in the eastern DRC, it is often a weapon of war. “It is used by armed groups and regular forces to punish, dominate and destroy local communities,” says Christine Amisi (known as Dr. Tina), executive secretary of the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, DRC, in a new interview with Michael Messenger, president and CEO of World Vision Canada, to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. According to Dr. Tina, an average of 1,152 women are raped every day in the DRC. This, of course, has a horrific impact on individuals, families and entire communities, including mass displacement, the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, increased poverty and the destruction of social cohesion. I believe it is important to create awareness about what is being done about this and how you can help. We can feel hopeless, however, there is hope. In 1999, the Panzi Hospital (located in eastern DRC), founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Dr. Denis Mukwege, opened its doors, and the hospital has treated more than 50,000 survivors of conflict-related sexual violence. “We realized early on that medical care wasn’t enough to treat survivors,” says Dr. Tina. “We take a holistic approach that combines medical health, psychological and socio-economic support.” This holistic approach includes the innovative Healing in Harmony (HiH) therapeutic music program developed by the Canadian organization Make Music Matter. HiH helps heal emotional wounds that can last a lifetime by pairing survivors of violence with a professional therapist and music producer to unlock trauma from deep within the brain. By writing, creating and performing songs about their experiences, these survivors become empowered artists and community members. “The negative perception of trauma is replaced by positive

WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF When architecture and interior design merge, it’s the perfect combination. The duo that make up Toronto-based firm Wise Nadel Design Inc. are also a match made in heaven. By Adriana Ermter

“I LOVE THE ARCHITECTURE STAGE THE MOST AND HE PREFERS THE DECOR. WE’RE PASSIONATE DESIGNERS WHO ARE NOW ESTABLISHED UNDER ONE ROOF.” Robin’s signature style is light and ethereal and always includes an injection of colour. It is, along with her background as an architect, the perfect fit to Harvey’s penchant for neutral, monochromatic, tailored, and high-contrasting interior design. “We feed off each other,” affirms Robin. “I love the architecture stage the most and he prefers the decor. We’re passionate designers who are now established under one roof.” Since joining forces four years ago, the duo has become renowned for blending luxury with everyday living. Their high-end, statement homes range from 5,000 to more than 10,000 square feet and are designed in what Harvey and Robin describe as clean, timeless, PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALVARO GOVEIA

As does their vision: to give their clients the quality home life they’ve dreamed of. “We approach each project as if it’s our own home,” says Robin.

This client-driven focus ensures the firm’s personalized touch. Just as Harvey and Robin handpick each project’s team from their in-house pool of 10 designers, it is not unusual for a client to choose which principal player they wish to work with. “People often interview us together,” explains Robin. “So even if a client came to us because they liked my previous work, they may feel that Harvey is a better fit for them.” And vice versa. “These things are organic,” adds Harvey. “It’s a leap of faith. Clients are trusting us with their most prized possession, so it’s critical that the right people from our team do the job.” To ensure the vision for each home is accurately executed, one or both principals oversee all projects. Additionally, Harvey and Robin enlist the support of top-tier builders, tradespeople, suppliers, and landscap“We’re full service,” says Harvey of their collaboration with clients. By fine-tuning architectural drawings and plans, creating a schematic design to translate the home’s vision and flow, and respecting the execution process and budget, they guarantee their clients are involved, and simply delighted with the outcome. “Our clients come to us with the pieces; we weave their ideas together,” says Robin. ROSE Diana Balanyuk, of Diana Rose Design, on realizing the beautiful life. By Lydia Dumyn

Y

ou might say designer Diana Balanyuk approaches her work from the inside out. As the creative director and CEO of architectural and interior design firm Diana Rose Design, Diana prioritizes her clients as both the object and inspiration of every project. “Our design process begins within the first minutes of meeting a new client, when I start to see their personality peek through the façade. From there, I explore their goals, layering in lifestyle, personal aesthetic preferences and timely trends within the context of the space,” she explains. “To me, good design is more than just ‘skin deep.’ It must enhance its owners’ lives on a more profound level.” This strategy has served Diana’s clients well, since launching her Markham, Ont.based design firm back in 2012. Renowned for conceptualizing and creating original, luxury interiors, her professional involvement begins during the construction phase to ensure the home’s architecture and interior are in alignment with its owner. “Understanding the client is the foundation of every design,” she says. Despite her understanding of each client, Diana also has a respect for the physical structure and its intricacies. “My clients’ homes, much like their owners, each have their own unique personality,” she says — a character, if you will, that helps guide the direction of the design process and the destination. Of course, Diana’s work is also a reflection of her own journey through life and around the globe, from her birthplace of Kazakhstan

to travels through Europe where her proclivity for beautiful things led her down the path of interior design, on which she forges ahead and carves out her own distinct niche. Diana is respected for her intelligent integration of architecture and interior design, with a design philosophy that features a refined use of materials and strong silhouettes. Her inspiration comes not only from the client, but a culmination of the “home of the home,” as she explains it — the location and environment of each project. Her designs serve to enhance the natural landscape, with an integration of exterior and interior in one cohesive whole. From vision to built form, Diana’s work is highly curated and consciously deliberate. Behind the scenes of each project and her broader business, she gives credit where it’s due: to her team of designers and vetted craftspeople, whose approach is as tailored as each design, helping realize her bespoke visions.

“UNDERSTANDING THE CLIENT IS THE FOUNDATION OF EVERY DESIGN.” “Relationships are everything in this business,” she ruminates. “From connections with the client, to the environment, and the skilled trades who help to bring the overall dream home to life. It’s all about teamwork and collaboration — truly a labour of love for all.”

Vintage Vibe After years of spartan Scandi-looking interiors, that 1970s look is wrapping our interiors with a warm nostalgic glow, thanks to cozy curves and shapes. Make it more inviting with a modern nod to the shag carpet by choosing a thick, high-pile wool carpet where you can really see the loops. Go Bold This trend pays homage to the maximalist aesthetic that has been on the rise for the past few years. “A large portion of our clientele want that bold artistic, tone-on-tone,” says Pourvakil. Art Deco motifs are also popular in this category, with coveted geometric patterns such as swirls, triangles and chevrons dazzling the eye and adding much needed glam to a room. REAL ESTATE WITHOUT BOUNDARIES With years of boutique-style real estate under her belt, Katia Bailey is leading The Agency to success across southern Ontario. By Adriana Ermter

What do you get when you cross a Real Housewives of Beverly Hills fan with a 16-years-and-counting real estate broker? The answer is Katia Bailey, of course. “I am a die-hard reality-television fan,” explains Bailey, the managing partner and broker of record for The Agency in Waterloo, Oakville and Muskoka. “I was watching the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills when Mauricio Umansky started his real estate company, The Agency. I loved watching this person, who was just so human, grow his company and team and work so effortlessly and with such sincere transparency with clients. Then, when I saw Mauricio and The Agency on the TV show Million Dollar Listing, that was it. I knew I wanted to be a part of what they stood for.” Becoming involved took tenacity on Bailey’s part. After a handful of emails, a phone call and two stateside meetings with Umansky, plus training in California, Bailey’s wish was finally granted. By April 2020, The Agency Waterloo Region was born. Fast-forward two years, she’s opened a second office in Oakville and a third in Muskoka. The boutique-style, luxury, real estate company with glamorous Beverly Hills roots is thriving. “We tend to deal in higher-end homes, but we are proud to work with listings in any price point,” says Bailey. “The Playboy Mansion seller gets the same experience as someone selling a four-hundred-thousand-dollar home in Oakville. Our team shares

the same mindset: We’re committed to exceptional service and providing quality real estate experiences. We’re real people who take a no-nonsense approach.” While Bailey’s 38-member team takes their individual roles seriously, they also check their egos at the door — The Agency is all about collaboration. Working cohesively by talking about leads and pooling resources inclusive of clients and listings from each of the three offices is a daily occurrence. Team members are market savvy — they strive to create meaningful and lasting internal and external relationships. Members take turns feeding into the company newsletter and every agent wows their clients with jaw-dropping listings from The Agency’s 50 offices — from Amsterdam and Mexico to Calgary and Montreal, and of course, Waterloo, Oakville and Muskoka — captured on the Beverly Hills head-office-facilitated website. One member Bailey calls out is her partner in business and in life, Steve. “He’s the managing partner in all of our offices and we truly have a partnership and vision for The Agency in Ontario. He streamlined his team to actively work with me in building our mutual dream,” she says. “He now focuses on his niche market, which is luxury homes, and he’s available to help me by supporting and mentoring all of the agents in our offices.” When it comes down to it, Bailey says she and her team are blessed and excited. “In a big-brand office, you’re just a number. Here, we have a level of intimacy. But I can’t take credit for that. I saw this structure unfold on television with The Agency and wanted to align with this culture, so I have. Now, we get to constantly rethink industry norms and push ourselves further through technology, design and service. It’s real estate without boundaries and we’re doing it.”

fusing dilemma; money is abundant yet there is no guarantee of this allowing for promising futures. Shame, guilt and/or a lack of awareness can follow generous gifts of wealth when there is no preparation for the responsibility that comes with it. Passion and meaning may have to come from sources other than struggling to build a fortune or create a nest egg of your own, and that’s okay. Accessing the courage and taking the time to connect with the very generation that you want to see soar usually begins with understanding your own internal struggles, beliefs and visions. I believe that most benefactors deeply wish for their children to grow up to be independent and community-giving people. Our children want to know that they have their own unique gifts and a life ahead that is full of purpose and meaning. How do we accomplish these lofty ideals and challenges? Some Advice: People seek therapy or advice from others all the time. Athletes have coaches for their bodies and their minds. Businesses hire consultants and employ experts to accomplish their goals and objectives. Why do we suffer in silence when passing on what we have worked our lives to achieve and nurture? It just makes sense. Creating and articulating a family philosophy and life plan often requires a fresh set of eyes, ears and crucially, but often misunder-

AN EVENING OF GLAM SERVES UP GORGEOUS CANADIAN DESIGNS Toronto’s exclusive members-only club Clio was the perfect setting to bring together some of Canada’s finest fashion and most fabulous guests, for an intimate salon presentation of Canadian fashion hosted by Suzanne Rogers. By Christine Rezvanian Photography by George Pimentel

We are all excited for the opportunity to glam up again. In December, Suzanne Rogers brought together some of Canada’s most spectacular designers for a salon-style fashion presentation at Toronto’s exclusive Clio venue. “I wanted to do a small salon-style presentation and Clio was the perfect venue. In these uncertain times, it was nice to see people come out and enjoy each other’s company, following health guidelines, and to support Canadian fashion,” says Rogers.

Social media can be a place where you can create your own brand and become a platform.” When CoverGirl reached out to Sangita three years ago because of the following she’d built, she knew her strategy had worked. “I still pinch myself to this day that it's real. That's when I realized that I do have a voice and that I'm able to help others. That was a moment,” she muses. When it comes to her designs on the future, Sangita is quick to tell me that the engineer in her puts a lot of thought into anything she approaches. Helping the South Asian community to build their growing platform is one of her biggest goals. “People are finally realizing that you don't have to be a doctor, you don’t have to be an engineer. You can be in the arts; you can do television. You don't have to be what the South Asian community always told us, and that’s what I'm trying to portray,” she says with passion. “Having two girls, I want to break those barriers for them. So, I think in the next few years, I might want to do make a makeup line. But I'm being smart about it. I just want to keep that door open.” Also on Sangita’s wish list is travelling the world to tell people’s stories. She’s already started a program called “Music Around the World,” in which internationally diverse musicians are given a chance to make their music heard on ET Canada’s YouTube channel. Ultimately, it’s about helping give everyone a voice. “I think over the last two or three years, finally, people are saying, ‘You're South Asian. You're allowed to be yourself and be South Asian and be who you are,’” she says. Sangita feels it all comes down to leaving doors open. “I'm a very ambitious person, and I remember someone telling me, ‘You're being too ambitious!’ and I thought, ‘You would never say that to a man!’ I think that kind of ignited me, and I said, ‘You know what, I'm going to do this on my own. I'm going to keep going and find my little team!’ And I'm there now. Now I'm at a point where I can say yes or no, so that's pretty cool.”

their ultra-traditional space. “I’d designed the owner’s brother and sister-in-law’s home and they told me they were very happy with what I did there. So, they said when they were ready to revamp their own space, they’d ask me to do it,” says Fazzari. “When it was time, they gave me the keys and told me to do my thing. I showed them my plans and the 3D renderings, and they were thrilled with everything. They really trusted in the full design process. It wasn’t an easy space to create because everything was sectioned off. I wanted to make a huge impact — it’s grand now after the renovation.” The couple (who have two teenagers at home) have lived in their house for about 12 years. They wanted their whole main floor redone — a top-to-bottom refresh. “They wanted to have a more open-concept space, including a big, workable kitchen in which to entertain

inding David was such a happy accident,” says Vanessa Axelrad, the associate director of Gallery 133 in Toronto. “I was in Vancouver settling my son into univer-

sity, and had gone to see an artist at the Parker Street Studios. She encouraged me to go to see David’s studio, so I did. It was like putting on a glove. There was immediate comfort. We just fit.” Axelrad is referring to Vancouver-based artist David Robinson, of course. The figurative sculptor, who works predominantly with bronze, steel, silver and concrete, is the gallery’s latest signee. A selection of his work — prodigious, halting creations ranging from three to 22 feet in height, each one featuring a bronze figure at its centre — will be on exhibit in Toronto for one year starting this May. “I felt like a kid in a candy store,” laughs Axelrad, reminiscing. “I just stood in his studio and wanted to see more and more. I could envision all of it in our gallery.” While their initial in-studio encounter was serendipitous, Robinson has lived in Axelrad’s peripheral vision for years. A 30-year professional artist, his sculptures have been exhibited widely, from the Hooks-Epstein Galleries in Houston and Melissa Morgan Fine Art in Palm Desert to the Newzones Gallery of Calgary. Many pieces have been procured as statement art and featured in foyers of airports, museums,

It’s exposure to the work and with it an expanding constituency of good folks who enjoy and talk about the work.” His work, in all fairness, started when he was a child. Robinson sculpted handfuls of earthen clay into animals in his parents’ backyard before elevating his craft by studying fine arts at Central Technical High School in Toronto and Langara College in Vancouver. His formative years as an artist, he says, can be credited to the teachings of Joseph Caveno, a painter, printmaker and sculptor; Andy Blick, a ceramist; and sculptors Bill Clements and Leonhard Oesterle. “In between my classes at OCAD University, I used to go up to Yorkville to see the galleries,” says Robinson, who graduated with honours from OCAD University’s Fine Arts, Sculpture Program in 1987. “It was incredible. As is Toronto; it’s a city, a landscape, a terrain that I love and have known for significant chapters of my life.” This new chapter, soon to be revealed within Gallery 133’s contemporary and THIS IMAGE: Corpus Callosum Detail

light-filled 5,000-square-foot space, includes minimalist pieces with names like Nexus, Corpus Callosum, Praxis, Dead Reckoning and

Geist. Robinson describes them as “formally cool but with narrative angst,” each massive, abstract geometric form — steel pillars, cracked spheres and enormous skiffs — abundant with symbolism. Their stark environments depict the duality of human fragility and strength, magnified by the large-scale proportions and diminutive figures, balancing at their nucleus. “A lot of my work is introspective and personal and unfurls from the human condition,” affirms Robinson. “Pieces like Geist and Praxis, even Corpus Callosum are derived from the sifting of personal experience. This small figure’s plight writ large by way of a monumental scale surrounding.” As curator, Axelrad has thoughtfully selected each work to hang within the gallery’s 17-foot-high, expansive white walls. “David’s work draws you in,” she effuses. “The elements in each sculpture are created with precision and accuracy, clearly by the hand of a seasoned sculptor. He only produces six to 12 editions of each piece, occasionally allowing a theme to lie fallow before returning or moving on. I’m so glad to get him at this stage in his career.”

February 2020 when Di Toro started to construct this powerfully grand estate in Woodbridge, Ont. The 10,000-squarefoot mansion would be built on an oversized lot on a quiet street that backs onto The Country Club golf course. “I purchased the property with the intention of creating something truly unique and luxurious. I wanted it to be monumental yet timeless. I envisioned something extravagant and so extraordinary that the average custom-home builders don’t typically dare to build on spec,” says Di Toro. For a builder who’s been in the business for many years, Di Toro wasn’t afraid to take a leap — he knew he had the expertise and longevity in the industry to pull off a build of this magnitude. 133

Interior designer Andrea McMullen spoke to us about her incredible townhome located in the highly sought-after Friday Harbour Resort. By Lisa van de Geyn Photography by Larry Arnal

T

here’s a place north of Toronto where Ontarians flock year-round to get away. Friday Harbour Resort in Innisfil, Ont., was designed to be a premium destination —

a place where residents and visitors alike can relax, feel at peace and “live every day like it’s Friday.” Situated on the water’s edge of Lake Simcoe, the development boasts a marina, an impressive golf course, a 200-acre nature preserve, a beach club, lake club, plus a host of restaurants, boutiques and a vibrant boardwalk. Those fortunate enough to experience the area sing its praises. Now just imagine making this place your home. That’s exactly what designer Andrea McMullen, the owner and principal designer of ADM Design Inc., did. “If you’ve ever been to Friday Harbour, you know you don’t want to leave Friday Harbour. That’s how it works up here,” she laughs. “It’s different than what you’d expect from a northern, cottagey area. They call it the Miami of the north. Some owners live here full-time, while some keep a second, third or fourth home here. It’s just such a fun place to be.” McMullen is the exclusive designer for Friday Harbour, so she already had a soft spot for the location. Three years ago, she opened her large retail interior design and furniture store on the boardwalk (called ADM Design & Decor). “I wasn’t living 142

It’s very hotel-chic.” there yet, but I realized I never really wanted to go home. And I had this stunning midcentury-modern home in King City, but I just really wanted to be up north. I decided that it made the most sense for me to stay where I wanted to be,” she says passionately. “I was fortunate enough to buy a townhouse on the water, across from my shop. In warm weather, I just look out onto my dock and my boat sits in front of my property. I can Sea-Doo to my job sites.” Her 3,300-square-foot contemporary townhouse is three floors. “I bought this unit and really loved it, but still wanted to personalize it — it’s my passion to personalize spaces. So, I decided to tear out the floors and closets, rip out the kitchen and some walls and make it more my own.” On the main floor, there’s a family room, powder and laundry rooms, as well as a generous new black-and-walnut kitchen. “I really needed to make the kitchen more functional for me, and, of course, it needed to be gorgeous. I rebuilt it so that I have lots of hidden storage because that’s one thing I felt I was missing in the space. If you don’t have somewhere to put your stuff, you’re not going to love your space,” she says. She extended the kitchen island, included a waterfall feature and added more bells and whistles. McMullen then added an LED-backlit black onyx fireplace that pairs perfectly with the black in the kitchen. The hue is carried throughout the rest of the house. The second floor features two bedrooms, plus the incomparable master. “The principal bedroom is charming and massive. There’s a beautiful Caracole bed, handmade seashell wallpaper, a custom light (that makes the room look like a starry night; “I create art from lighting,” she says) and great teddy-bear-fabric chairs we had made locally,” she explains, adding they built a textured 144

Luxe to You

EN VOGUE

Fashion designer and creator of the Black Designers of Canada, George Sully told us how he lives his best life.

Living Luxe: What does living luxuriously George Sully: Living luxuriously means having the mental freedom to do whatever you’d like to do creatively while enjoying the perks your creativity yields physically. LL: How does luxury and extravagance factor into your work? GS: Extravagance has levels, depending on the client; it depends on how minimal or over-the-top the work is going to be. LL: What plays a role in allowing you to live your best life? GS: Time and family, of which I have an equal amount, allow me to live my best life.

mean to you?

LL: What objects do you surround yourself with to inspire and support your everyday growth and why? GS: Past works and projects of mine adorn the shelves in my office, reminding me of where I’ve come. At the same time, these pieces keep me focused on looking forward and not repeating the past. LL: How important is it to you to refresh and revitalize either your work or yourself? GS: I’m in a constant state of work and self-evolution. It’s probably why I’m constantly collaborating with others. The key to self-revitalization and rejuvenation in your work is experimenting with new sources of energy. LL: What would you tell others about living their most luxurious life and how they can strive to be their personal best? GS: Loving what you do is the first step to achieving your personal and professional best. Surrounding yourself with positivity I would also say is key. Lastly, it’s all-around mental health. Though luxury is most often associated with privilege and wealth, self-health plays
