Spreading Goodwill I hope my letter finds everyone healthy and safe. It was an incredibly busy summer and a busy start to the fall, but I’m truly grateful that we are producing beautiful magazines and working with our wonderful core team. My children are finally back at school, and they are so happy to be reunited with their friends. I am sure many people can relate to this and I hope this has been a smooth transition for everyone.

In this issue, we feature our philanthropy editor, Real Housewives of Toronto co-star and someone who is a dear friend of mine, Joan Kelley Walker. She’s the epitome of class, integrity, beauty and genuine kindness. She thinks of others before herself and always tries her best to help those in need. We became friends prior to the start of Living Luxe.

Joan inspired us to start our philanthropy section, and Anthony and I quickly realized how important it is to use our platform to help those in need and create awareness for wonderful causes. In each issue, Joan graciously writes an article on a different cause while sharing her experience. Joan, I am honoured to work with you, and I feel that there is goodwill in all of us and that’s what makes the world a beautiful place. support others during this hardship. One of my favourite initiatives is the Hospital for Sick Children. (It’s one of Lisa’s too, see page 44.) Its doctors and nurses do such tremendous work, and this is a cause that is very dear to my heart as it supports the most vulnerable.

Kudos to all the medical professionals and frontline workers for everything they do to keep us all safe.

Giving Back Joan Kelley Walker has been part of Living Luxe since day one. She writes about her philanthropic endeavours in each issue, and she shines when she’s helping others who are less fortunate, have disabilities or suffer from illnesses, as well as those who could simply use a hand.

When we selected Joan to be the cover of our autumn issue, it got me thinking about ways in which we can all make a difference in our communities.

One of my favourite causes is the Hospital for Sick Children, affectionately known in Toronto and around the world as SickKids.

This renowned hospital plays a special role in my family — as it does for many families across Canada — so it’s the place we always choose when we’re looking to make a difference and give to charities that are close to us. SickKids is currently working hard to raise money to build a new hospital — with the help of donors like you, it will transform its campus from the older buildings that now stand in downtown today and build state-of-the-art facilities that can better help kids from around the world. We are so lucky to have SickKids in our backyard — it has been, and continues to be, one of the best children’s hospitals on the planet.

Another cause that’s important to me is the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). Talking about mental health is still taboo (though not as taboo as it used to be, thankfully), and as someone who suffers from a mental health illness, it’s important for me to remind you that while one in five Canadians will experience a mental illness in any given year, five in five Canadians — yes, all of us — have mental health, and it’s something we all need to take care of. CMHA helps keep people out of crisis, and it strives to keep people out of hospitals, both before mental illness can happen and after a crisis has passed. There are so many ways to give, and if you’re looking for a new philanthropic avenue, please consider giving to this Whatever cause you choose and however you decide to give — whether it’s making a financial contribution, volunteering your time or another equally important way — know that you’re making a difference and changing someone’s world for the better. That’s something to celebrate.

Going for Grange

Renowned for its aromatic complexity, intensely rich fruit and ripe tannins of Shiraz, Grange’s style and winemaking techniques haven’t altered since the first experimental vintages. After 70 years of unbroken vintage releases, the heritage icon is recognized by collectors around the world for its unique Australian identity, consistency and proven aging potential. “The original aspiration for Grange was to create a red wine capable of staying alive for a minimum of 20 years,” affirms Peter Gago, the fourth-ever Chief Winemaker for Penfolds.

“Tell that to sexagenarian vintages such as 1952, ’53, ’55 and ’62. Stunningly drinkable in 2021. In modern parlance — under promise, over deliver! Long may it continue. And modern Grange vintages such as 2008, ’10 an ’16 patiently await judgement in 2071.”

Beyond Grange, the Bins exhibit a savoury theme that runs through the 2019 reds. Additionally, each of the new red and white vintages will continue to develop and improve for many years after release. But they can also be opened and enjoyed immediately, particularly if you appreciate a youthful and fresh flavour.

The Perfect Superblends

Supplementing the 2021 Collection are two limited-edition wines made from parcels destined for Penfolds flagships, Superblend 802.A and 802.B Cabernet Shiraz. Created in different environments, these wines represent two unique interpretations of the iconic Australian blend. Carefully selected from the coveted 2018 South Australian vintage, both Superblend wines include significant amounts of fruit from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra, with smaller blending components sourced from Wrattonbully, Robe and Clare Valley. This powerful duo will be released sequentially and is designed to be collected. “These two new wines are immediately Penfolds, yet different, propelling varied attributes that will challenge and engage,” adds Gago. “Spoilt by choice, A-grade Cabernet Sauvignon and A-grade Shiraz from a wonderful harvest; French and American oak barrels of the highest quality and that much-coveted ingredient, time, as well as winemaking blending freedom to re-configure the expected.”

Shaminder and Jasneet Gogna, affectionately known as @mr_and_mrs_ condoville, may be new to Instagram, but with photo captions such as, “The first time I set my eyes on you, something told me that my life would never be the same,” and “Jas and I feel that we are very lucky. We’re lucky to have found great people who believed in our vision. We’re lucky the timing in life was right. Most importantly, in the context of @condoville, we’re lucky that we get to work with people we consider family,” it’s hard not to swoon a little over their Instagram feed. The business and life-partner’s world, as captured in a handful of teeny-tiny squares, has a dreamy, this-isthe-life ease to it. But with just one caveat: They’ve worked hard to get to where they are.

“Our company, Condoville, had humble beginnings,” affirms Shaminder Gogna, the CEO of Condoville, which he, along with his wife, Jasneet, are co-founders. The couple launched their now full-service Toronto-based brokerage that specializes in providing real estate opportunities across Ontario in 2017. “We started out in a 10-foot by 10-foot shared office with our first two associates,” adds Shaminder. “There were a lot of spiders and at night, bats would flap down from the ceiling. Once, we walked out and there were three live bats flapping toward us! Our first child, our son, Kian, was only four weeks old then. We were trying our best to do it all…and we did, and when we look back now, we laugh.”

The speedy and successful evolution of their company — and family, as the couple has since been blessed with a daughter, Selena — is certainly something worth smiling for, even laughing about. With a full-time staff of 10 and an additional eight in sales, their headquarters at 1901-5000 Yonge Street in Toronto and their Condoville North location at 201-4550 Highway 7 in Vaughan bustle with energy. The busy team juggles everything from working with developers and builders, marketing and selling condominiums for landowners, assisting homeowners with financing and more. As for the couple, Shaminder focuses on growth and assisting landowners through the complex navigation of real estate development. The mentor to Condoville’s executive team, he also oversees the company’s annual marketing and sales strategies ensuring their efficiency and effectiveness, making updates as needed. Jasneet, on the other hand, markets and sells real estate for high-net-worth clients, while planning, leading, organizing and controlling both offices’ day-to-day operations. Being hands-on for

their team and their clients is a crucial element to the success and longevity of their brand.

“It’s important to us to be present. To address the issues happening in the market like, helping Gen Z’s, who want to get into the market but don’t think they can afford to own their own home,” says Shaminder. “It’s scary when you’re putting a lot of money down, so we provide access to the market and to high-density living (condos) by finding the opportunities in and outside of the Greater Toronto Area, while educating and showing people how to invest in real estate. We don’t want real estate to become like art and only for the elite.”

This personal approach and presence in real life and on Instagram as Mr. & Mrs. Condoville, along with their business-oriented handle @condoville, is how the duo connect with their clients and tap into new opportunities. Food shortages around the world are serious issues that we should all be paying closer attention to. Here’s what you need to know.

I’m sure we all agree that every child should be raised with love and respect.

They should all have access to education and be able to dream and follow their dreams. And they have the right to be happy. So, try to imagine the heartbreak parents and children feel when not only are their dreams dashed, but their lives are threatened because they don’t even have access to life’s basic necessities.

Everyone deserves food, water, shelter and clothing. But the hard truth is that many are without life’s essentials. And things are only getting worse because of the aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rising food prices and devastated livelihoods means that millions more children are only one step away from starvation. In fact, a recent World Vision report warns that pandemic-related malnutrition could kill 250 children per day by the end of 2022.

Action is urgently needed to prevent a humanitarian hunger crisis that continues to grow. As I write this, I realize there is a different, more serious tone to this piece. But I feel in my heart this is an undeniably urgent matter. Globally, countries are facing many threats at once — conflict, political unrest, COVID-19, economic instability, climate change. All of these issues combined create hunger hotspots in some of the toughest places for children to live. These factors are pushing back decades of global development, creating poverty cycles that have a stronghold on people’s dreams for a better life.

Famine has no place in the 21st century; it is inexcusable because it is entirely preventable. I do believe Canadians need to pay attention to food crises everywhere. Here in our country, the earliest signs of food shortage would likely initiate plans and programs to provide for our people, but that does not happen elsewhere in the world. In fragile regions, governments, societies and economies are often in turmoil. People are already spending much of their income on food.

This growing food crisis also fuels conflict and vice versa. Even the best-laid national plans can too easily be destroyed by drought or gunfire.

FORM AND FUNCTION Kitchen designer Beverley Binns shares how the kitchen island is now working harder than ever.

The island has been a ubiquitous part of every kitchen design for decades. “It’s always one of the top three requests in a new kitchen,” says Beverley Binns of Binns kitchen & bath design.

“We’ve been working on the island for a very long time,” she says, remarking how cooktops gave way to large industrial ovens for a time. We are moving back toward a sleeker aesthetic.

The hub of the kitchen, the island is ground zero for prep work, socializing, serving and eating. Now, it’s evolving to work even harder with distinct zones and additional functions, often hidden from view.

Refined Good Looks “With kitchens becoming more streamlined and less bulky, we want them to be part of our living spaces, but not utilitarian — even more so than ever before,” says Binns. In this beautiful kitchen, the island is elegant and subdued. Its functions (a flat induction cooktop and down-draft ventilation) are streamlined and hidden from view, save for a single bowl prep sink. Here, the kitchen is essentially in the wall and the island becomes part of the living space. “This is a great example. Losing Mark made me think about legacy — how too often we aren’t able to define our legacy goals before it’s too late. So, what’s standing in the way? Often, it’s the courage to speak your truth and discover the “why” behind your actions. What’s important to you? Why do you do what you do? What would you do if your money issues were resolved?

How can money help reinforce your relationships — rather than be the object in itself? How do you want to be remembered? What do you want people to feel now, and when you are gone? These are the questions I encourage you to consider.

Interestingly, I learned that in the Bible, money is mentioned 1,500 times. Money has always had influence. Money is important, but spirituality is what it encourages.

I have arrived at three simple rules to sum up the best way to be remembered fondly: Do not put money above anything else. Yes, money is powerful, it can build temples, but empty temples are just walls. Money is important in your life, but how will it augment your legacy? Plan accordingly.

assion, compassion and a sense of community: Far beyond the glamourous trappings of her socialite status and jet-setting lifestyle, these are the qualities that define Joan Kelley Walker. A farmer’s daughter who was born and raised

in Wilcox, Sask., Joan’s humble beginnings belie her luminous glow as one of Toronto’s most stylish and buzz-worthy gals about town. And her relentless drive to give back and stand for something meaningful in a culture often preoccupied with artifice and appearance has earned Joan the reputation as a philanthropist with heart.

Married to retired Magna automotive executive Don Walker since 2000, the model, producer, writer and TV personality was catapulted to national attention as one of The Real Housewives of Toronto in 2017. While starring in a reality series of that nature may never have been on her bucket list, Joan sees the experience as a feather in her fashionable cap, and something that really did pay off. “Some people look at me and say, “You seem like the last person who would do a show like that,” she shares. “I’d done a lot of other television but I had never done reality television. I thought, ‘How hard can it be?’ And I have to say it was really challenging and difficult at times, but it did provide really interesting opportunities. And my brand came out of that. Me being the philanthropy editor for Living Luxe came out of that. And now I think I'm shining a light on a lot of charitable organizations and I wouldn't be able to do that at this level, if it weren't for that show.”

Joan’s accessible clothing line with Walmart, which lasted five seasons and had all of the proceeds going toward the Breakfast Club of Canada, along with her role as this magazine’s philanthropy editor, are two endeavours she’s especially proud of. Her past work with the United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council and being a spokesperson ambassador for World Vision for the past two decades are another couple of impressive accomplishments that illuminate her robust resumé. She’s worked tirelessly for all her platforms from the start. But the seeds for success are usually planted early on, and Joan traces her personal evolution back to growing up in a super small prairie town. “We were part of a community — everyone knew each other, everyone came together and supported each other. I think that's where I learned the art of just being kind,” she reflects. “Whether or not you really have a lot in common with people, you just learned to look at the goodness in people. So I think hard work and being kind is the platform that started everything off for me.

The ability to dream usually figures greatly in anyone’s career trajectory. And the young Joan certainly did her share of dreaming big, though it wasn’t something she was particularly encouraged to do. “I don't think people were saying, “Here, you can do this… go, go!” I think there was resistance because they had concerns for me: I was a young girl out on my own, with all these big ideas of what I wanted to do,” Joan explains. “But there wasn't a lot of guidance. And that's nobody's fault. It was just because nobody ever told me that I could go to university and study art or drama, or theatre, or television production or anything like that. And that was clearly the vein that was calling me.” Joan, a multi-tasker by nature, had a dogged determination to somehow pursue what she felt was her calling and also attend university.

She didn't identify with it. And if you asked her, ‘How are you?’ She'd say, ‘I'm fine. How are you?’ She would never let it win.

But to cause the ripple effect, you have to talk heart-to-heart to people about causes that matter and different experiences that people have.” With all her philanthropic outreaches, Joan has the chance to do just that. “It’s all about kindness and compassion and hard work,” she muses. “This is what makes the world go around.”

There’s no question that the entry hall is what Wise calls “a key moment,” thanks to the combination of materials, an exquisite laser-cut large-scale mosaic floor and stone archways. “We were so inspired by creating real drama in that foyer with those materials and to create this nod to deco. I’ve never done these dramatic stone archways that literally go right to the ceiling with a beautiful stone fluted entablature at the top. I think it’s incredible,” he says passionately. “To me, one of the biggest moments really is that entry hallway as you look all the way through to those exquisite Italian glass and metal doors to the breakfast room and kitchen area.

ottage decor doesn’t usually evoke the idea of a killer contemporary art collection. Kitschy canoe prints and wildlife paintings, maybe. The once overlooked cottage is now having an art renaissance. When a long-time client

of Toronto’s Gallery 133 purchased a rambling Muskoka cottage, he came to gallerists Paul Wise and Vanessa Axelrad to animate the space with a gorgeous collection of original works. The cottage was beautifully designed to highlight large artworks with zonal lighting and wall space taken into consideration. (The previous owner was also an art lover.) The gallery set to work sending more than a dozen paintings and sculptures hand-picked to fit the space and, in the end, the owner selected several pieces, instantly changing the mood of his space.

Upon seeing a smaller version of it, the owners chose to commission a larger 60-inch x 60-inch rendition to perfectly fit the entryway. Juxtaposed against the stone pillars, Palmer’s vibrant painting imbues the space with joy. Palmer created the painting without a brush, instead pouring acrylic paint onto an unstretched canvas.

“He directs the paint with different creases and folds of the canvas, creating elaborate pathways for the paint,” says Axelrad of the flowing, organic results. The bold colourful work, which appears illuminated from within, sets the tone for the cottage.

The multidisciplinary artist’s work is housed in notable collections, as well as in the homes of media giants and rock stars, and feels right at home in Muskoka, too.

The image also lends an air of familiarity and approachability. “The series depicts all the loving people she’s known in her life,” says Axelrad of the artist. “She is very humble, kind and charitable — a superior person.” No doubt that positive energy is imparted into the work itself and its environment.

In this series, Hartley randomly inserts the letters of the first 10 words of a book or poem into the artwork. The haphazard placement of the letters and balls on ledges engages the viewer with each pass. The interactive piece appears different from all angles, making it a great conversation-starter in the cottage’s main living space.

Sampson’s piece is an ideal addition to the collection, one with a more direct correlation to the lakeside locale. The pull of the water and its rejuvenating qualities is at the heart of any cottage, and here it is celebrated on canvas, too.

Set in a forest that looked nothing short of a fairy tale, models graced the natural

runway to the music of Canadian songstress Deborah Cox. This collection of 40 luxurious ready-to-wear garments and gowns showcased Jordan Stewart’s attention to detail and the architectural complexity in her creations.

Jordan Stewart has once again proved she can go beyond our imagination with this collection of dream-worthy gowns that clearly show her passion in each piece. Her artisanal process of creating each gown produces exceptional luxury, not only in the look but feel and wearability of her pieces.

The final gown of the show, The Suzanne, was named after philanthropist Suzanne Rogers. It took Stewart more than 150 hours to create with exquisite details and craftsmanship throughout the body of the dress and an extravagant train more than eight feet long.
